Totally inconsequential thing that still annoys me no end: it being still stated and accepted as fact in certain places (even amongst some supposed Class 40 experts) that the train involved in the Coppenhall Junction crash in December 1962 was D326 when it was actually D215.

Parenthood-Maki, Mai, Nobara, and Miwa X Male Himbo Reader Pt.2
@exolocke : Hey I saw ur Jujutsu Kaisen women with Himbo reader, and I was curious if that could get a part two for when the relationship is more developed and more life long topics are brought up in it, stuff like the topic of kids, or other things that come up in a long term relationship, I didn’t see ur stance on NSFW topics so I totally understand if that’s not something included if it’s out of ur comfort zone.
Anyway thanks for taking time to read this and have a nice day 😊
(thank you for the request! I’m perfectly fine with NSFW though I will admit I’m not all that good at it. Originally this was going to be mostly NSFW but then the writing goblin in my head kind of just… took the request idea and ran with it in a different direction.)
But enough of that, YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND!
Warnings: Light Angst, Suggestive Content, Mentions Of Violence

Maki
Tumblr media
You and Maki have been together for years.
There were of course highs and lows as with any relationship.
But the both of you moved past them with a bit of hard headed determination and a lot of the two of you being the two of you.
And this of course led to the inevitable that everyone could see from a mile away except you two.
Marriage, the merging of the last of the Zenin clan and your own family.
It was something that neither of you ever expected to happen while everyone else had money on how long it would take before one of you popped the question.
Of course Gojo won that bet, even from beyond the grave, but he’s not important right now.
So now the two of you are married.
And the both of you were being very, very, very stiff around one another.
It was worse than when the both of you started dating.
All because the both of you had a question they wanted to ask the other.
A question that sat between the both of you like a loaded gun.
A question that you were the first to ask.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
“Maki…” You began to say before trailing off while the both of you lazed about on a slaw day while the rain was beating against the building.
“Yeah?” Maki tentatively asked, already knowing the question about to be asked and still not knowing how she would answer it.
“What’s your thoughts on having kids?”
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Maki’s world screeched to a halt as she turned the question over and over in her head.
“What did she think about having kids?”
It was never something she thought about.
Never something she ever considered to be possible.
And yet now that she had been asked the question she had to decide if she wanted to have one.
It was something she could answer easily.
Yes, she’d love to have kids with you, and raise them with you.
But there was more to it than that.
There was…
No, they weren’t here anymore, she was free of that place.
And if there was one thing she’s learned from you it's this.
Don’t just think, feel too.
So Maki did exactly that and answered your question in the only way she knew how.
With her whole being.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Inumaki was concerned about Maki.
Sure she could probably slap a curse and kill it but still… She was a friend.
A friend who hasn’t come to training in quite a while.
Which for anyone else would be perfectly fine.
But Maki wasn’t other people, she was Maki.
Training was what she did for fun.
And Inumaki wanted to know why she wasn’t coming to training and why she was always sleeping or eating weird foods.
Well, weirder foods than usual that is.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Inumaki slipped behind the corner as you and Maki talked.
“-you okay?” You asked the muscular woman.
“Yeah, just tired, and nauseous, why the fuck does growing a kid make you feel like you’ve just gotten off a damn roller coaster?” Maki asked with a groan while leaning on the wall.
Meanwhile, Inumaki was having his world flipped on its head at the sudden information he had been given.
Maki Zenin, the strongest woman he knows bar none, is pregnant with your kid.
And he just figured this out because he stuck his nose where it shouldn’t have been.
He needs to run, and fast.
Really, really, REALLY fucking fast.
So that's exactly what he did as soon as the two of you weren’t paying attention. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Inumaki’s current train of thought could be most accurately described as “Oh god, Oh fuck, Oh god, Oh fuck.”
And it was for good reason considering what he just learned.
He prayed to god Maki wouldn’t kill him if he accidentally let it slip.
Oh who was he kidding, she absolutely would.
Inumaki burst into the faculty room where his friends minus Maki sat.
“Whoa! What's wrong with you, Toge!?” the large ball of fluff known as Panda asked.
And without thinking, the white haired man exclaimed “SALMON ROE!”
He then slapped both his prosthetic and his real hand over his mouth as dread overtook him.
Meanwhile everyone in the room looked like Inumaki had just pulled the pin on a grenade and tossed it.
Mai
Tumblr media
Mai Zenin sat on the couch, devouring her fifth bag of chips from a bowl that was placed on her swollen belly.
“You're a hungry little shit ain’t ya?” Mai affectionately asked the small human growing inside of her.
Mai was not expecting a response when she asked this but she got one in the form of the baby kicking.
For the very first time.
“…Oh.” Was all Mai was able to say as a flood of emotions overwhelmed her.
Mai was someone who never let out what she was feeling.
It was something she learned from when she was young.
A tool for survival.
But now she had no need to use it.
Her life was filled with friends, with family, true family.
She had a life filled with love, with everything she could want plus more.
She even had you, one of the most powerful living sorcerers as the one who loved her.
And now, even more was about to be added to this dreamlike life of hers.
A child, one she wouldn’t let go of even if she was dead.
A human that would receive as much love as Mai could offer.
A human that would receive as much love as you could offer as well.
A human that wouldn’t have to fear what she did, not only because the Zenin were gone, but because Mai would simply never allow that to happen.
That is the promise she made to the child growing inside of her in that exact moment.
That is the promise she made to her child, the one that she would raise and support, no matter what.
Nobara
Tumblr media
Nobara held her daughter in her arms, looking into her sleeping face with her one good eye.
It was a surreal experience.
“Ya know you were a lotta trouble to bring out here right? How the heck are you so dang peaceful now?” Nobara whispered the question before turning her face to look at you a few feet away from her, sleeping in a chair, your arms crossed, but more than ready to turn any cursed spirit that tried to show its ugly mug into ground beef.
“Prolly cause of your dad, he always had a good poker face, though it was probably a good thing Yuji got to that Mahito guy before he did, If what I’ve heard bout’ that warpath he was on after I got taken out of commission and his domain expansion is to be believed he would’ve turned the entire area into one of those crazy things that M.C. Esher guy made.” Nobara muttered to herself before looking back at her child.
Her Child.
Nobara turned the phrase over and over in her head.
Didn’t quite make sense to her yet.
This small, tiny little thing in her arms came from you and her.
This little girl was the very manifestation of the love you and Nobara shared.
A physical manifestation of everything you and Nobara went through to reach this point.
It was something she needed to wrap her head around, though her heart was more than already there.
She could already tell that this little girl was going to be the greatest part of her life with you.
And she couldn’t wait to get that life truly started.
Miwa
Tumblr media
You, Miwa, and a small, little boy dressed for school walked side by side on the street.
“I’m gonna make so many friends!” the small boy exclaimed, pumping his fist into the air, copying his fathers excitable nature.
“Oh I know you will, ain’t that right Kasumi?” You asked your wife and the love of your life.
Miwa turned her eyes down to her son and then raised her eyes to yours.
Eyes that were filled with sadness.
“Of course, our little boy will be the most popular boy in school.”
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
You and Miwa waved goodbye as the two of you walked away from the school.
“Heh, pretty sure that teacher thought we were Yakuza.” You said with a chuckle.
“If you started to wear your clothes right she might not get that impression.” Miwa said with a slightly teasing tone that held a sadness within.
“Sigh What’s up with you Kasumi? You’ve been acting weird since this morning.” You asked your wife in concern.
“It’s no-” Miwa began before being cut off by you saying “Don’t say “It’s nothing of concern” Kasumi, I can tell when something is wrong with you.”
Miwa was silent for a moment before trying to say something, but stumbling all over her words “It’s… I… schools and… and curses…”
“Don’t worry Kasumi, curses aren’t going to go after him, not with the both of us around.” You told your wife in an attempt to soothe her.
“B-but what if-” Miwa began before you wrapped your arm around her, pulling her close to you and saying.
“We can’t worry about what if’s, we won’t be able to protect him from everything, it's impossible to do that, but we can do everything we can while we are here for him to lean on. As long as we love him and as long as we do our utmost to protect him from everything we can while steering him right, that’s the best we can do. I know you want to keep him away from the things that took our friends but we can’t, all we can do is what we can do. I’m just as afraid as you are but being afraid won’t do anything, doing what we can will.”
“I-i know, you're right as usual, but can we just go over that place, one more time tonight?” Miwa asked, wanting to do everything she can to protect the little boy you and her made together.
“Of course, I was just about to suggest the same.”

Spider x HUMAN reader
SPOILERSZSZZSZ
Warnings: cursing, guns, violence, almost character death, and character death.
This was a request: we have been with the sky people since birth. We go on a mission with the Colonel. Spider; a few others convince us to join them, and help defeat Quarich
Y/H/T = YOUR HAIR TYPE
Y/E/C= YOUR EYE COLOR
Y/N= YOUR NAME
Y/S/C= YOUR SKIN COLOR
A/N: I hope this is what you wanted, I hope you enjoyed it.
Oh they're both 23.
Me and Spider have been raised to hate the Na'Vi's. Spider has been different, he's been distant lately. His father has been training him to be one of his Dogs.
I never wanted my life to be like this, to want to murder the Na'Vi. I was always in love with their ways, wanting to be like them, wishing I could be like them. But I was a human, a human that was meant to be on Earth.
I noticed that Spider was in the training room, he had been in there almost the whole day.
My pounding in my ears as I hadn't seen him in two weeks. I opened the doors to hear the sound of punching, and grunts.
He was punching one of the practice dummies. I quietly entered the room, only for the machine's slide door to shut loudly. He stopped and turned around.
Before I could say anything the door opened again only to find a blue Na'Vi version of Quarich.
"Good, you're both in here." Spider stopped everything as he stood next to me. He looked stronger, his muscles were more pronounced.
He's taller too, maybe a foot or two taller than me. His hair wasn't down past his shoulders anymore, as he chopped it off. His face matured, as he was looking more like his father by the day.
"I want you two to come with me on an important mission." Is he serious? I hadn't gone on a mission yet, and I hadn't had enough training.
"Sorry to interrupt sir, but I've never been on a mission before." I said.
"Well, today's your lucky day." I gulped, I waited for Quarich to speak again.
"What's the mission sir?" Spider asked, waiting for his order.
"To kill Jake Sully." I made sure to not make a reaction.
"To kill?" I asked, wanting to make sure I heard correctly.
"Is that gonna be an issue?" I shake my head.
   "N-no sir." I stammered.
"Good. We leavin' first thing in that mornin'." I was now dismissed as I quickly rushed out of the training room.
I thought I was able to finally speak to him, but I knew that he didn't want anything to do with me. I just needed to know where we stood, we were so close, yet we're so far away.
I thought he loved me, the way that I loved him. We hadn't snuck out to look out over the fence anymore together, wishing we could be one of them. No more sneaking into each other's rooms at night to have one last kiss, to be him being the last person I see to the first person to see in the morning.
Only for us to be a part of a war at such a young age. We were just lab rats, to be tested on to see who was worthy enough to kill a Na'Vi, just some silly little game.

The next day…
We were heading to the forest. I was loading my bag as we still had an hour before we left. I heard a light knock on my door, I turned around and saw him.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, not stopping what I'm doing.
"I wanted to talk." I scoffed, stopping what I was doing to turn around to the boy.
"Kay then, talk. Because I've waited to talk to you for months, so you get the same treatment." I walked away from him, but not far as I shut my bathroom door to grab what I needed.
"Cmon, you seriously can't be mad at me." He said through the door.
I quickly opened the door, shocked that I didn't hit my face in the process.
"Mad? No, I'm not mad. I'm more than mad." I slammed the door again to grab my toiletries into a small pouch.
I still hadn't gotten the chance to fix my hair, as my y/h/t was all over the place as you didn't get a chance to put it up.
"Baby c'mon! I'm sorry alright!" My hands continued to shake, not wanting to hear from him anymore.
"Leave!" I couldn't take it anymore.
"Spider, get out! Because I swear, I'll scream bloody murder." I threatened, my hands moving along with my emotions.
"Fine. I'll go, I'll leave. We're done." He was quick to leave, slamming the now closed door causing the walls to shake a little.
Did he just break up with me? My brain was fuzzy trying to figure out what just happened.
I was barely dressed, as I was in my military pants and black sports bra I rushed out of my room to find him.
I didn't care that people were looking or cat calling, but I was stopped once again by Quarich.
My face hit his hard chest as I was quick to cover my arms over my almost bare chest.
"What are you two doin'?" I shrugged, not knowing myself.
"I think he just broke up with me." I whispered, not wanting to cry in front of my boss/his father.
I couldn't tell if his eyes held sympathy, but I couldn't help but think he was.
"We're leaving now. Get your things together." He ordered, not caring about the topic at hand, or the fact I'm not wearing a shirt.
"Yes sir." I muttered under my breath walking away with embarrassment.

I punched the wall, not caring how much my hand hurt or the dent I placed in the wall. I grabbed my bag as I was now fully dressed in my uniform, I grabbed my exopack and placed it on as we were now on the ship.
"They're not in the forest." I informed, looking over the monitors from the last time we were in the villages.
I put a tracker on the areas we were in, to track down the Sully's.
"Where the hell are they then?" I pursed my lips at the tone in Spiders' voice, the type of tone that'd make you want to punch a man in the face.
"They're at the Metkayina village. They're a water tribe, unless you want to back down now if you don't know how to swim sir." I said, he clenched his jaw as he looked towards his father who just nodded his head.
"We need to find a boat then." I was shocked that he didn't want to say something back. He usually did when we would get into fights like these.
"If you could find one." I retorted, trying to get him angry, it was the only way he'll talk to me. His emotions would be so bottled up that he'd shout them out.
He turned around and raised his hand in exaggeration, I flinched. I even noticed Quarich was about to step forward as I continued to stammer over my words.
A look of realization hit him, as he saw the look of fright on my face.
"Did you think I was going to hit you?" I continued to stare at him like a deer in headlights.
"Let's just find a boat, and kill Jake." I said, clearing my throat as everyone stayed silent.
I walked off as I went to find someone with a boat.

   Time skip because I'm lazy😭
It's been a few hours since we've been on the water, I was able to find a scientist to let us borrow a boat.
I was feeling sick, as I've never been on a boat before I threw up in the ocean.
"You're a soldier girl, you fly in the air yet you can't be on a ship?" I swish water in my mouth to get rid of the bile, and spit it back in the ocean.
"Reasons why I didn't join the Navy." Quarich lets out a laugh.
"You have good humor girl." I smiled in amusement as I still noticed Spider's distance.
"I see something!" I shouted, I noticed four blue Na'Vi's on what looked like Ilus.
They seemed to be rushing to escape, only for us to be faster.
We were able to kidnap Sully's kids to use as bait. I made eye contact with the little girl, as I felt bad.
I didn't like this, my heart was in the pit of my stomach but I knew that I had to follow orders.

"I'm sorry." I sobbed, as I went to release them only for arms to wrap behind me.
"Spider let go of me!" I grunted, I couldn't escape his hold.
"No! You're going to get yourself killed and I'm not going to let you." I continued to fight his hold, not wanting to destroy a family all because of a failed mission in the past.
"They're children! Look! They're children! What if they were ours? What would you do if Jake Sully kidnapped our children and used them as bait!" I shouted.
"Please, we could defeat him. You are good people, please help us." The older girl spoke, as they looked at us with pleading yellow eyes.
"Spider." I said his name, my voice sounding desperate.
"Spider!" I shouted, as he held a knife in his hand and marched towards the crying children.
He let them go, cutting their restrains that were tied to the railing of the ship.
"Thank you." The older boy said, a look of relief on his face as he looked at me.
"Let's put an end to this." I placed a hand on the tall boy's shoulders.
He was only a few feet taller than Spider and me.
But before we could escape the sound of gunshots echoed, causing us to freeze but I was the first to jump off.
They all had the idea to jump, but I decided to stay behind. Wanting to stall for them. As I saw Quarich, I gasped. Grabbing a gun as I saw Jake jump onto the ship as well.
"Here!" I shouted, tossing the older man a gun.
I was able to distract Quarich as I dove into the ocean.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Spider screamed at me, as he was facing me in the water.
"I have to go back! He needs our help to kill him!" I was trying to have Spider's grip let go of my waist, so I had to kick him hard.
I was able to get to the latter as the other kids followed with me.
Jake was in a choke hold, as he was losing his breath.
I found the gun that was far away, I grabbed it and I went to try to shoot Miles, only for soldiers to come after me.
I noticed they were jumping back into the water as I pushes the older boy out of the way.
I let out a shout, as I saw that Jake was able to get the upper hand again and Neytiri to jump out and shoot Quarich.
My eyelids began to feel heavy. I felt two strong arms grab me and try to swim us towards a safer area.
I don't know what will happen next, but my eyes are closed and my mind goes blank.
Three days later….
I finally woke up, pounding in my head as the light shined in my eyes.
"Dad! She's awake!' I groaned again at the shouting.
"Where am I?' My voice was hoarse, as if I've been asleep for years.
"You're in the village. Thank you, I don't know how to repay you." I shake my head and give him a tired smile.
"They don't deserve this, your family. I will do anything to be able to be like your people, to live a life like this." I whispered.
"I will forever be in your debt." I smiled again.
"Is he dead?" My voice was low, as I saw him nod his head.
"Yes, he is gone for good." I let out a laugh.
"Thank you. Thank you." I cried tears of joy though I should feel sad that the boy I loved father was dead.
Miles Quarich was an evil man, a monster.
"Someone would like to see you though." I scrunch my eyebrows together only to see a worried, and guilty Spider.
"Let me know if she needs anything." With that he left, the air felt thick.
I pat the side of my makeshift bed that was made of animal fur and rope.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything I said or did. My heart stopped, your heart stopped twice. I couldn't tell if you were going to die, and you were going before I could even kiss you, and the argument we had was so stupid. I didn't mean anything I said. I see you y/n. It was something I learned from Jake." I let him continue his ramble.
"Kiss me." I demand, and without a second thought he does.
     "I see you, Spider."
     "I see you, y/n."
I hope this is what you wanted and thank you for this

Check in PT. 1
Leon was stuck in his DSO office, sitting and staring down at the stack of paperwork in front of him. He groaned and held his head in his hands, unable to focus. He himself was rather disheveled, his hair tousled from fidgeting with it, his tie crooked, and the bags under his eyes deeper than normal. Was this what it came to? The past two decades, wasting his life away to fight a battle that never seemed to end, to fill out paperwork that never seemed to end, to watch people die. Was this how his life was meant to be? Leon had been told many times to try therapy, to seek professional help. The thought of opening up, in a closed space, to a stranger nonetheless, was terrifying. Though Leon didn't know why he was scared. He had lost his parents at a young age, moved from foster home to another, busted his ass in Police Academy, faced Raccoon City on his damn first day, Boot Camp, Training, Punishing Missions, faced on a whole cult alone, Protected the President in a white house outbreak, survived a submarine explosion, Killed the damn President, chased after Simmons, Killed Simmons, The Eastern Slav-Republic, Lost his whole team, lost himself, helped defeat Arius, stopped another outbreak, and don’t even get him started on Alcatraz. Leon knew he had faced horrors no one could imagine, yet he was horrified by opening up. Made zero sense to him, but what can you do?.  He pushed the thoughts away, trying to focus back on his paperwork.
He knew deep down he had people to turn to if needed, but that fact never made it easier. Leon had people there to help drag him out of alcoholism, yet part of his brain itched to fall back…..to fall back into those habits of self isolation and drinking. Yet with his job, it didn't seem like an option. He glanced down at the paperwork in front of him while running a hand through his hair “dammit” he muttered under his breath, his tone low and tired. He didn't know what he was cursing at, possibly his thoughts, or the paperwork, or his underlying need for comfort. Comfort didn't seem like something he could ask for, Leon: a hardened agent, asking for comfort? He let out a bitter chuckle at the thought. Though Leon knew exactly who he could ask, they were probably just as stressed and loaded with work as he was. He quickly dismissed the thought and tried to focus back onto his paperwork. The task seemingly impossible with the turmoil his brain was in, his words coming out in scribbles on the pages.
God this was pathetic. He felt so ridiculous;his appearance, his sleep schedule, his mind. All of it was a mess. Leon wanted nothing more than to go home and feel peace, he wanted to enjoy the warmth of his bed. Yet even then he knew his mind would haunt him the moment he was left alone with his thoughts. He began to fill the familiar pit forming in his stomach, staring at the door of his office, he could feel the stir of it. Panic. The underlying understanding he would feel like this until the day he died settled into his gut, his breathing quickening, his hand holding his pen trembled and dropped it. Leon shut his eyes tight, bouncing his leg as he let the feeling of panic and dread wash over him “please…..please please please ... .not now..” he muttered, pleading with his own emotions to stop. It wouldn't stop, his palms grew clammy, his hands trembling as his breathing quickened. He stared at the ceiling while clutching his shirt, begging to some force to stop this. He didnt wanna be found like this in his office, he couldn't handle that. Not here, not now.

Disappearing act - chapter IX
Geto observed her more carefully, trying to decide whether she was being serious or not. — Killing non-sorcerers? — It's an option, but I don't take it seriously. Do you? — Yuki pressed him with a loaded question. Suguru Geto thought of them all — Shoko, Nanami, Haibara, Riko, Kuroi, his parents, Satoru — and his chest filled with an unbearable pain, but also an incredibly monumental love, so much that it felt like it would stretch and burst at the seams of his heart that could not contain it. He thought of his father again, reading him "Night on the Galactic Railroad" when he was young, and he thought of Satoru reading his own copy now during his leisure nights. He thought of Giovanni and Campanella, and of the Scorpio of the night sky, and of the nobility of sacrifice, of setting yourself on fire to warm the world.

Chapter IX: courage is found in unlikely places
Four people waiting in a practically abandoned train station in the countryside of Japan, in the dark. The mountains that surrounded the area gave a claustrophobic impression of walls that closed in on them, as they awaited the train’s return — which would only happen close to dawn, as it should arrive promptly at eight o'clock in Tokyo. The sweet melody of the cicadas, somewhat unexpected for that time of year in the middle of November, filled the night air.
Satoru Gojo wasn't the type of person who thought too much about things before jumping into action. When he received a call in the early hours of the morning and answered the phone automatically, the first thing he noticed was that the person calling him was Suguru (which indicated how weird the whole thing was, in his opinion, something that immediately made him sit up in bed to pay attention). The second and most important thing is that Suguru needed him, and that was more important than anything else, and that was exactly why he was in an open place in slippers and socks and without any jacket or coat, because he didn't think about any of this before leaving.
The two children were sleeping on one of the benches, and the two talked in whispers so as not to wake them.
— I'm sorry I woke you up, I... I don't know what I was thinking. — Suguru admitted, feeling embarrassed. His coat served as a blanket for the girls, leaving his body exposed to the cold early morning wind, which made his breath condense into a small cloud.
Gojo shrugged, sitting down next to him. — I’ve told you, sleep isn't that important. What happened?
— They were going to kill them both, Satoru. The villagers locked them in a cage without food or water for three days, waiting for me to arrive so I could kill two children.
Satoru tried not to appear shocked upon hearing this, failing miserably. Over the years, the two of them became increasingly desensitized to the horrors that a jujutsu sorcerer faces on a daily basis, but sometimes there was no way to help but feel shock, dread, disgust, anger. This was one of those times. — But they… What do they have to do with it? They’re kids, it’s not like they could be curse users…!
— They are the daughters of the old kannushi of the village temple. He and his wife were killed in a car accident about three years ago, under questionable circumstances, or at least that was the impression I got from the village chief's tone. The two girls are twins, and as they had no other family members, they were left alone in the temple to survive on their own. Because of the lack of repair and lack of worship of the temple's god, it became a curse that began to punish the village with fires and floods. The villagers blamed them because they were the only ones capable of seeing the curse. — Suguru explained, observing the two children, with a softer look in his eyes.
The answer left a bitter taste in his mouth, Gojo thought. If the villagers had taken care of the children and the temple, they would never have faced the curse’s wrath, but they were punished for their own sin, for their own cruelty. They dug their own graves when they tried to push the blame onto the only people who offered the truth regarding the tragedies that befell the village, how ironic that was... — They were gonna kill them...
— I proposed them a deal. I said I would exorcize the curse if I could take the kids with me. They agreed, and… — Geto fell silent for a moment — So I thought about killing the villagers. I thought of exterminating the entire village, it would be easy and quick, and it would be a suitable punishment for them, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. They would suffer what they made two innocent people suffer. It would be fair. But then I remembered our promise, and I thought again and decided it wasn't right. They were too ignorant to know what they were doing, and they were so scared that they just wanted to find someone to blame so they could solve the problem. I'm sorry I woke you up, Satoru, but I called you because I was afraid that if you weren't here, I would turn back on my word.
Satoru hugged him tightly and wished that moment would last forever, no matter how impossible it was. — You don't need to be sorry. You know I would walk through Hell for you, so... It’s a promise, remember? I would stop trying to carry everything on my own, and you could count on me if you ever lost faith in your convictions. We are both doing our parts.
The train approached the station, the sound of something heavy sliding over the tracks ending their embrace. Geto felt a sharp pang of pain in his heart, without being able to explain very well why, and looked away to the two twins who were still sleeping peacefully, exhausted.
— What are we gonna do with them? — Suguru asked, regretfully.
The solution seemed obvious to Gojo. — Well, we have Riko, Megumi, and Megumi's sister too, and if we can take care of three, we can take care of five people, right? We can support them, I mean, we can support an entire orphanage if we want...
The idea made Suguru laugh. — Have you ever thought that we really are becoming parents to so many children?
— The most bizarre part of it all is that I’ve thought of it. We’re parents, Suguru... Isn't that weird? I can't even be responsible for myself. — the other replied — Do you know how many tamagochis I’ve killed in this lifetime? All of them. And even then, I became a dad, technically speaking, at least according to the law. It's crazy.
— I can't say that I have that much experience either... I had a bunny when I was a child, but he ran away from home after we’d had him for about two years, and I never managed to find him. — Geto recalled, delving into the memories of his childhood.
— A bunny?
— His name was Toto. He bit anyone who tried to pet him, except me. I woke up one day and the door to his cage was open, and he was no longer there. I think my dad let him run away after Toto almost bit his finger off...
Satoru laughed. — Toto… Now that’s a funny name.
— I was seven years old, come on… — Suguru defended himself — He was gray and very fat, he looked like a fur ball.
— On a scale of zero to ten, how angry do you think Professor Yaga would be if he found out that we got a pet and were hiding it inside one of the dorms?
Gojo and his brilliant ideas…
— Probably eleven. But I think that, compared to children, a pet wouldn't give him a heart attack. — Geto replied.
The train arrived at the platform, empty. Carrying the two children, they entered the deserted train, where the first rays of dawn reached them. The night, which seemed to have been nothing short of a nightmare, was now as far away as humanly possible: it was as if all evil had been banished along with the darkness, the light bringing hope of better days back.
It would be a long trip back to Tokyo, and Satoru was tired, as they both knew: that was why Geto let him rest his head on his shoulder and sleep soundly while he finished reading his book, a habit that had become increasingly more common by the heir of the Gojo clan, always an entitled brat. It wasn't a big deal, really: Geto didn't mind serving as a pillow, it was nothing more than an innocuous, meaningless gesture. Or at least that's what he tried to convince himself of.

SUPERNATURAL 9.08 "Rock and a Hard Place" | REVIEW
OVERVIEW: Dean and Sam Winchester reclaim their virginity to get the scope on what's been stealing virgins from a local chastity group. At the heart of it all? The Roman goddess of the hearth, Vesta.
RATING: 8/10. goofy episode hee hee... not entirely factual,, and Vesta was quite embellished to reach villain status, but i liked it!
AVAILABLE AT: prime
previous episode // all episodes // next episode
this review is mostly me just explaining Vestal Virgins + Vesta, because i thought it was interesting and it's the bulk of the episode lol SPOILERS BELOW
THINGS I LIKED / FACT-CHECKING:
one of the recurring themes in SPN's deity-episodes is that the modern world is so non-religious, and non-pagan, that the gods of old are no longer picky about their sacrifices-- they'll take anyone and anything. that's how low they've fallen. and this episode was no different.
Vesta repeatedly explains how they used to offer up 6 virgins a year to her, and now people don't even know who she is, so she has to take them herself. There's a quote in the show:
"Virgins? Fire? Sound familiar? Vesta, Roman goddess of the hearth. In Ancient Roman, six virgins were dedicated to this chick every year. Their main duty was to tend Vesta's hearth."
now this is a nice nod to history-- the Vestal Virgins were 6-7 girls who were chosen from the families of free men to remain virgins only for 30 years in service to Vesta. so when SPN's Vesta mentions the 6 girls, this is true to the lore. BUT, they were not sacrificed to her!!!!!!!!!!! actually, i couldn't find any evidence of human sacrifice at all,, it was only animal sacrifice.
also, these Vestal Virgins were among the most honoured in all of Roman society. they were considered to be vital to the safety of the city and were treated with utmost respect. they also had LOADS of rights that other women did not have:
they had no legal obligations to their family, did not need to answer to their fathers, could control their own property and give it to other women (this was illegal for everyone else!), have their own will, and very curiously-- if they gave testament in a trial, they were NOT required to recite an oath before the State before doing so!!!
so the Vestal Virgins were very very top-shelf, high-class, special girls and they would have been treated with every respect.
now, in SPN, the "virgins" or rather, "non-virgins" (since it was only those who broke their chastity oaths that were captured) were chucked underground in this abandoned train station.. this too is accurate!!
the whole point of a Vestal Virgin was to be.. well, a virgin. naturally, breaking that oath was punishable by death.. but the Romans were superstitious and thought that they would curse themselves if the Vestal Virgin's blood was spilled--> they couldn't kill her directly. so instead, they would bury them alive in an underground chamber.
this process was actually... slightly nicer than it sounds because the underground chamber was mildly furnished, and they were even provided with a small portion of food and water to survive the first few days..
so ultimately, the victims in SPN getting sent to the underground chamber did resemble the punishment Vestal Virgins would have received in Ancient Rome, just a bit dirtier and more cruel. also, they wouldn't have been buried together.
now, if you're wondering why their virginity was so important, it's actually very interesting-- the Romans thought that the Vestal Virgins represented the walls of the city. therefore, while they remained "unpenetrated", the walls stood firm. but, when they lost that virginity, the walls were subject to "holes" and could crumble.
this belief only held for the period that the Vestal Virgin was a Vestal Virgin, but after she retired, if she wanted to marry or not be a virgin, that was ok, and she was allowed to because she now no longer represented the wall!!!!
THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE / FACT-CHECKING PART 2:
maybe they explained this and i just forgot, but while i can understand Vesta punishing oath-breakers, i don't really know why she didn't also just the virgins she wanted for her sacrifice as well... idk
honestly, i liked most of this episode (in terms of mythology at least) so yeah!

First look at She-Hulk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things I like about She-Hulk:
- Jennifer's and Bruce relationship, BUT only when they don't do shitty, mean things to each other. I know that people liked that, but I am personally not a person that enjoys the mean siblings trope at all. I prefer uplifting siblings that listen instead of fight and scream. I liked them interacting in any scene in which they were just chilling together. That was nice that they have so much fun together.
- That they both have cartoon movies they suffered on (BING BONG, NOO!), because it creates this sense of shared and lived childhood.
"Triggers are anger and fear" "Those are the baseline of any woman existing". That was a nice commentary on the fact that women live in a society made by men for men and live in constant fear of being approached by men, because men are like Russian roulette, you never know which gun is loaded and which is not, so you never know which one is a threat and which one is not, so you always have to be cautious around every single one. And also anger, anger at men's society, anger at discrimination, at lower pay, at having to work your ass twice as hard as men to be acknowledged for something that men are acknowledged without putting as much work simply for being men. Woman is more equipped to be a Hulk, simply because she has to control herself every single day of her life to not get killed or called crazy for showing emotions. Nicely feminist tidbit.
- Bruce's surprise at Jennifer being Jennifer and not having an alter ego is hilarious, though I fear what they will do with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things I dislike about She-Hulk:
- Episode is too short. 35 minutes is not enough to outline an origin story. Everything happens too quickly due to the fact that the episode is too short and the executive decision that the origin story will be just one episode. It mostly feels like a 30-minute-long montage of training inside a movie than an origin story.
- Not enough blood. It just feels silly that so little blood was enough to change Jen. That scene when a drop of his blood falling into Jen's wound makes her change reminds me too much about the 2008 Hulk movie that I wish everybody forgot. It just makes me think about that moment from the 2008 movie when that guy that was helping Bruce was injured and Bruce's blood fell on his forehead, and it started changing. I wished that MCU decided to forget about that movie. That movie was horrible. It is technically accurate, but I think blood transfusion would be better still than a few droplets of blood. And it would happen in the hospital instead of the forest, and it would be much more humane and less savage than the show tries to show it. I am not entirely mad over this, but it looked weird that it happened SO QUICKLY. I think it would be better if it happened slower, with her changing suddenly still, but not after a few seconds of getting Bruce's blood inside her. Not to mention that it only makes Jen's first transformation into another case of "MCU cares more about showing Hulk as a monster than portraying them as a human being with varied range of emotions except anger, a being that even though it is often associated with violence, can be peaceful and non-violent too", even when mere existence of She-Hulk is antithesis to the whole "Hulk is a savage monster" spiel. I still would prefer her to change in a different environment than in the forest like big foot.
- Has story bits that relate to the cursed 2008 movie that should be collectively forgotten, and I will never forgive that.
- Jennifer was not shown to be conscious while transforming in the same sense as she was in the Savage She-Hulk comic, when she was saying she feels full of power and can do everything. She is only conscious during her third transformation. I know it is better for the story, but I still like instant self-conscious She-Hulk better.
- Jennifer rejected being the Hulk and wanted to be fixed, while in the comics she instantly accepted who she was, even though she wasn't entirely happy about. TBH, I will always prefer the reaction that 1996 cartoon Jennifer had. She was happy to become She-Hulk. She was overjoyed to not be human anymore. Becoming the Hulk was the best thing that ever happened to her, but I do understand that MCU Jennifer has her own life and felt self-confident in her original body enough to not crave being She-Hulk at all to feel better.
- I still dislike that they didn’t make her bigger and buffer. She can be hyperfeminine and masculine at the same time! Those things DON’T exclude each other! LIKE JIZAZ FUCK I HATE STRAIGHT CULTURE! I HATE HETERONORMATIVITY! When she looks like this, she literally fulfills the green-skinned space babe trope, which in short is about women being painted in colors as aliens or fantasy races, while their male counterparts are allowed to look non-humanoid and monster-like, simply because “male audience won’t find monstrous women attractive”... all men who do not find monstrous women attractive and can only find attractive the women that look human, have certain sizes and are conventionally pretty, are seriously the weakest and most pathetic creatures on Earth. They don’t deserve women at all.

Tangled (Javier Peña x reader)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Javier Peña x gn!reader
Word count: over
Warnings: lots of cursing (reader has the mouth of a sailor), a little ~steaminess~, mentions of canon typical violence/getting shot, sexual tension
Summary: You and Peña were no strangers to being at each others throats but this argument went a little different than any other had.
Notes: This was cliche and self indulgent but I loved it and I hope you do too. Let me know your thoughts and opinions!! (also probably not going to turn this into a series but it isn't impossible ig)
________________
You charged towards the file room, feeling every ounce of your body flooded with anger as Murphy trailed after you, pitifully trying the stop the damage that was just about to occur.
"It didn't come from a bad place!"
You sporadically came to a halt, turning on your heels and pointing a finger right in Murphy's face, who had nearly crashed into you at your sudden movement. "Don't you dare try to justify this!"
Murphy's face was crumpled into a hesitant type of acceptance, still following you as you continued walking towards the file room, your anger radiating even in each harsh step you took. Once you reached the door, you slammed it open and nearly crashed it into Murphy as you threw it shut again, your eyes trained on the man you were directing every angry, foul thought at.
"Javier Peña, you fucking asshole!" you yelled, your pointer finger now directed at him as he turned to face you. You felt even angrier when he appeared to look at you tiredly at first, face twisted into an expression that perfectly read 'What now?' It didn't change until he registered your rigid body language and the way your face was a shade darker and your brows that were scrunched up.
Then his face dropped slightly and he looked over your shoulder at Murphy, who looked like a kicked puppy with the way he seemed to cower behind you. "You told her?"
Murphy winced slightly, trying to shrug away his concerns but his voice coming out empathetic. "She kind of interrogated me."
"Yeah. Y'know, because interrogations are part of the job!" you spat, eyes shooting venom at the brown-eyed DEA agent that stood in front of you.
He dropped the file he had held in his hand back in a box, placing his newly unoccupied hands on his hips and sending you a plain look. "Listen, it was nothing-"
"You know what else is part of my job, Peña?" you interrupted, allowing him no room to throw around pitiful remarks and false explanations of why what he did was okay. "Let me tell you since you have clearly forgotten: part of my job is catching the bad guys. Meaning I am fully capable of being on the field and getting my hands dirty!"
You took in a deep breath, your whole body feeling like it was on fire from the rage coursing through your veins. Peña let out a small sigh, rubbing at his face and his mustache as he looked at you through half-lidded eyes. "I know."
You let out an agitated huff, throwing your hands up and looking over at Murphy, as if saying 'get a load of this guy'. You turned back to the DEA agent, clasping your hands together. "Let me get this clear then. You are aware that is part of my job. And that this fucking case has become my whole entire life. Yet you neglect to notify me that tomorrow you are going to arrest one of these motherfuckers and don't put me on the God damn team!"
You probably should of quieted down. Surely people could hear you outside the thin walls of the room you were in but you paid no attention to that. Hell, let them gather outside the door and listen to how much of an asshole Javier fucking Peña was. It wasn't like they hadn't heard you two bicker and yell at each other before - it was practically a daily occurrence. You were always at each others throats and the smallest thing could tick you guys off but today was different. Today your anger was completely justified and directed at the exact right person.
"Why don't we all calm down and talk this over calmly?" Steve gently tried to suggest, always the voice of reason during times like these. Sometimes you would entertain his ideas but today was not one of those days.
"Fuck off, Murphy!" you snapped.
Peña redirected his attention to the blond-haired agent. "Give me a minute."
"Oh, you are going to try to magically explain this one away?" you ridiculed as Murphy left the room quietly, shutting the door gently and leaving you two alone.
Javier looked back at you, looking calm as ever and unaffected in every way. It only made your blood bubble even more and as he spoke, you felt your whole body clench up. "You need to calm down."
You hissed at that comment, literally hissed. "Oh, fuck off! You have no right to tell me to calm down. If somebody did this to you, you'd be tearing into their ass and acting like a bitch."
Javier couldn't argue that point, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only was it true, but there was no way he could convince you it wasn't. It also was probably the worst thing to say in this given situation, always was something that tipped you off.
"I mean, the fucking audacity you have is unbelievable. Truly impressive." you started to ramble, still sending a deadly glare his way. "You think you are hot shit because you are Javier Peña and you are a DEA agent and the fucking man whore of Columbia. But I am just as good as you, Peña. Hell, I am probably fucking better!"
"You are right."
You froze as you heard his agreement, biting your lip as you tried to detect whether or not that was meant to be some sarcastic play to rile you up. But it appeared genuine which only confused you further. "Then why am I being excluded from extremely important events?"
"It's dangerous." Peña answered plainly, adding no additional details as if that was enough.
You scoffed, tilting your head at him. "No shit, Peña. No offense but no one becomes a DEA agent because it is a safe, secure job. So that doesn't explain why I wasn't included in this."
Peña shook his head, leaning against the rack of files as he looked back at you. You wanted to force him to look away, his stare making you uncomfortable but there was no way you were backing down. "It does. This one is particularly dangerous and I don't want you involved."
Your eyes widened as you took in this new information. "Oh, so you think I can't handle myself?"
"I never said that-"
"I can handle myself, Peña. I am a fucking adult and not to sound cocky, but a hell of a fucking agent. I am capable and I am strong!"
"I know."
"And I can handle this mission."
"I know."
"Then why the fuck did I have to find out from Murphy that I am not joining you guys tomorrow?" you yelled, feeling your body become slightly fatigued from all the anger but you still stood straight and tall.
"Because you care too much and you'll get yourself killed if that means nailing these guys." Peña said plainly. No hint of emotion or manipulation. Just an honest answer to an honest question.
You found yourself for the first time not feeling angry but slight bamboozled. It felt like the rug had been pulled under your feet. You were standing across fucking Javier Peña, who you were pretty sure had never seen take a single day off. "That is the most hypocritical thing I've ever heard."
Peña nodded. "Okay."
You rolled your eyes, feeling once again angry by the dismissal. "Well fuck off because I spoke to everybody and I am on the team tomorrow."
You began to turn towards the exit when the man firmly stated, "No."
You turned back around, an eyebrow raised. "Excuse the fuck outta me?"
"I'm in charge tomorrow and you aren't on." Peña said, a sliver of annoyance eeking out of his words as he looked back at you with a stern glare.
"Fuck off. If I want to go, I'll go." you fired back, arms crossing over your chest defiantly.
Peña stepped closer to you until he was a couple feet away, his voice lowering to a menacingly deep level. "I don't want you on tomorrow."
Your eyes were practically shooting bullets in his direction. "I know you don't fucking like me Peña, but stop acting like a school boy and get your head out of your ass."
"Maybe you are the one with your head up your ass, agent." Peña cooly said.
You tried to ignore the way he was looking at you (and the way you could smell his aftershave from here) and put your hands on your hips. "Fuck you, Peña. You don't want me on tomorrow because I am a better agent than you, you selfish prick."
"That isn't it." Peña said with a chuckle, shaking his head as if you were saying the stupidest thing he had ever heard.
"It fucking is, isn't it? You don't want me strolling into your operation and doing the job better than you. Can't have your huge fucking ego tarnished by me!"
"That is not the reason why!" Peña shouted back, feeling himself lose his temper slightly.
This was the Peña you were used to, the one you egged on and led into a battle of cruel words and hateful glares. "Oh, fuck off. That is absolutely why!"
"Maybe, just fucking maybe-" Peña cut himself off, his chest now heaving as he copied your pose, hands on his hips and body stood straight.
You couldn't help the small grin that grew on your face. "What is it, Peña? Say it. Don't punk out now when things were just getting interesting."
"You are a child." Peña spat back.
You chuckled harshly. "Look in the mirror before you start throwing insults around, Peña. Now what were you going to say?"
Peña stared back at you, your eyes locked together in a visceral manner. "I don't want you to fucking die."
You couldn't help the throaty laugh that erupted from your very core, your head thrown back as you looked away from him for the first time to try to gather your composure. "Oh, fucking please! Spare me. You have never given a shit for me!"
Peña shook his head, looking slightly deflated as he looked away from you. "Fuck off."
"Oh, don't act like that. I am just supposed to stand here and believe that this whole time you've secretly cared about my safety and you don't have me on the operation tomorrow in order to keep me safe?"
Peña looked back up at you and you nearly wavered from the look in his eyes. You couldn't handle it if it were the truth, which the look he gave you said it was, so you continued on doing what you did best. "I don't need anybody to protect me. Certainly not you, Javier Peña."
"I'm not trying to protect you."
You lifted up a hand emphatically. "So you didn't not put me on this because you don't want me to die?"
"Fucking hell, you are so frustrating." Peña yelled back, face red and eyes throwing daggers as he stepped even closer to you.
You didn't dare take a single step back. You would show no fear or weakness. "And you are such a walk in the park? I forgot about how the man-whore of Columbia was always just a pleasant-"
You were cut off by Peña lunging forward and for a split second you thought 'Oh, shit. I'm gonna have to kick Peña's ass.' That was until you felt a pair of rough, chapped lips press into yours mercilessly and a pair of calloused hands grab at the side of your face.
You stood still for a solid few seconds, your brain seeming to short-circuit until it slowly registered the undeniable truth of the situation: Javier Peña was fucking kissing you.
Well then push him off of you!
Except you didn't. For all intents and purposes, you should have. You should of shoved him off of you, yelled at him for trying to pull his 'sex god' card on you, and maybe even delivered a striking slap to his face, just for dramatic effect. But you didn't. You stood there completely still until eventually your hands reached for the collar of his jacket, roughly pulling him in until he was pressed so tightly to you that you didn't think there was an centimeter of distance between the two of you.
You felt him turn you, pushing you back until your back hit the same file cabinet he had been leaning against earlier. Your lips finally caught up with the rest of you, lips fighting dominantly against each other in a frantic battle. It probably wasn't the prettiest kiss but holy shit, you couldn't think of a time you had been kissed like this. The kiss was so striking but also so passionate, both of you fighting each other in the most deliriously addictive way. You couldn't ignore the smallest voice in the back of your brain asking you why you hadn't done this way earlier.
Eventually your tongues danced against each other, begging for even the smallest taste of each other like you were both addicts craving even the slightest taste from the bottle. His hands drifted away from your face to your hips, clutching them roughly and tightly but not hurting you in any way. Just gripping hard enough for you to feel them and feel the emotion.
Eventually, after what felt simultaneously likes hours but also mere seconds, Peña pulled away and holy fuck, how did he look so good? His lips were puffed and red, slightly wet from the sloppiness of the kiss. His eyes were hooded and looking at you in a way he had before but you had never been able to place, always mistaking the lustiness for hatred (and hold up, had it just been lust this whole time?). His jacket was still clutched tightly in your hands and you should of let go. Anyone could walk in and see him standing up against you on a shelf with your faces red and chests heaving but you couldn't even bother to care, your brain still reeling and your body betraying you, yearning for more.
"I'm going tomorrow." you said, still slightly out of breath.
Peña sighed, his warm breath fanning over you and smelling slightly of mint gum and stale cigarettes. "I know you are."
You nodded, glad to see his slow acceptance creep in. You slowly released the jacket, looking at how it had crinkled from how tightly you had pulled him to you. He backed up slowly, one small step at a time as his eyes still traced each others faces.
Part of you wanted to reach out and kiss him again, fight with him again in the most delicious way but the door opened and you both turned to see the tall, blond-haired agent you had both become closer with than you initially thought possible.
"Have you guys killed each other?" he asked, trying to joke but also hesitant to with how foul your mood had been.
You desperately pulled away from the shelf and shook your head, though not to answer him but in some desperate attempt to try to shake away the evidence of what just happened (despite the fact that it was imprinted on your mind). "No. I'm going tomorrow."
Murphy shared a weary look with Peña who just gave a short nod and began to walk towards the exit. "She comes. If she gets shot, its not my problem."
You and Murphy both watched him slip past, moving out of the room and down the hall, away from you. Murphy twisted his head to look back at you, shaking his head. "Based off his behavior, I'd say that went well." he sarcastically mumbled.
You tried to chuckle but it sounded fake and hollow, your mind too preoccupied. "Yeah. Super well."
Murphy gave a roll of the eyes, used to the two of you being frustrated with the other as he slipped away from the doorway. You followed him as you made your way out of the room, the room where you still comprehend what exactly had happened in it. "You must of really went after each other this time."
You nearly choked at Murphy's quip, your mind taking a moment to realize he was speaking rhetorically about your arguing. He had no way to know the violent dance your lips had done or the way you both had perfectly expressed arousal and hatred with your tongues alone.
You just hummed, pushing past Murphy to head to your desk so you could work and just forget what had happened. Forget it because it meant nothing.

Revenge for a Widow
Sebastian Michealis x Black Widow OC
Character name: Kira Romanov
Chapter 1
Black Widows are girls that where kidnapped and pulled into a child trafficking franchise. But instead of selling these girls, they're placed under severe training that no girl should ever endure. After 16 years of enduring this training, losing her ability to have children, and forced into becoming nothing but a pawn in her master's game. A demon approaches her, her soul demanding his presence. A contract is sealed, and she deems revenge on the Red Room.
The only problem is. Petrov had gone under complete hiding, along with hundreds of trained black Widows, and many more little girls that have become victims to the masters of the chess game.
Warnings: Child trafficking, Cursing, Severe training, Forced hysterectomy, Use of guns, Selling the soul
Tumblr media
Once you've had blood on your hands you can never truly wash it from your skin. Even though it isn't there in your sight, you can see feel the stickiness on the skin, and the stains on the sink from when you scrubbed your hands and fingers raw of the blood from the last assassination.
Once you have red in your ledger, you can never truly wipe it clean. That was a lesson taught to every little girl that entered inside the halls of the red room. Other lessons that where taught where never fun.
Your hair should always be up and tightly set. Remember to keep your mouth shut, and never speak unless spoken to because everything you say is irrelevant. Keep your guns loaded and widow bites in set because you are a weapon. Make sure your outfit is tight and in place because your body is what will come to your use with targets.
You are no longer a girl.
You are no longer a child.
You are a weapon.
You are forever under his control.
"Congratulations on graduating top of your class." echoed the words of Petrov. Dull green eyes where lowered towards the floor, pain filling her lower abdomen, body slowly recovering from the procedure. Children where a distractions, and she couldn't be distracted.
Kira came a very wealthy family that helped create the Red Room. Instead of protecting their only daughter, they forced her to take on the training to become a Black Widow. Her red strands fell over her face ignoring the dictators standing over her, along with the doctor who was checking her vitals.
'I'll kill you all..' she thought to herself.
She was handed her uniform. The black widow suit that covered every inch of skin, but was tight in every which way showing off every curve. She was 16 years old she shouldn't be wearing such items of clothing.
'I'll kill them all.' she thought.
'My name is Kira Romanov, daughter of the creators of the Red Room. A child trafficking corporation that kidnaps and brainwashes little girls into doing their killings and assassinations for them. I am one of the thousands of girls that where taught to survive by using my body as a Swiss army knife. I use to have a family but now I have nothing, I can't even make a family.
There is one very important thing I've learned by being here. Monster are real, and they don't live under your bed or within your head. No, monsters are people. And the red in my ledger proves me to be one of them.'
Tumblr media
Run little girl.
They'll catch you if you don't run.
I ran as fast as possible, my boots would leave indents inside the ground only to be molded over by the rain glass shattering on the floor. My red hair was dripping with water, and my widow suit was beginning to soak through.
'Help!' my mind screamed.
'Help Me!' my heart yelled out.
'Please Help Me Away From This Hell!!' my soul screamed.
I tripped. Out of all the times to trip and fall! I stood up but they where behind me, guns aimed and I was their target.
"Help.." I whimpered.
But soon everything faded to black. I stood in nothing but a black abyss, a cold chill covering my whole body causing goosebumps to form beneath my widow suit. My red hair still dripping with the rain, choked sobs going silent.
'Do you wish to make a contract?' a deep voice filled my ears.
"A c-contract?" I whispered.
'Well, aren't you a very young master. You have summoned me. This fact will not change for all eternity. What has been sacrificed will never be returned. Now... choose.
'You give up your future, lose your dream, are stained with despair... yet at the same time, you shake off you past, fight reality, and never lose your nobility.
If it is your wish, I will follow you anywhere, even if your throne crumbles, and your shiny crown turns to rust. Even if the bodies pile up endlessly above the bottomless pile of corpses. Beside you as you lie down softly, I will be, until I hear the words "Check Mate"!' the deep voice broke through the darkness.
My hands where shaking as a clawed black hand appeared in front of him. Without think my hand reached up attaching to the other. "Yes.." I whispered. A mouth appeared of sharp teeth and glowing red eyes. The black abyss turned into a tall male dressed in a lavish black suit and slick black hair with glowing auburn eyes.
"What are your first orders my lady?" he questioned.
Blood poured down my left cheek, a demonic seal turning purple within my green irises.
"I order you to kill those that put my life in danger." I ordered.
He smirked, the rain appearing once more shattering against me. Loud screams from the security could be heard behind me, but something kept me from turning around to face the horrifying scene behind me.
Everything went quiet. The only sound was the rain pebbling against the ground. My green and purple eyes lifting to the demonic figure, my red hair blowing in the wind.
"What is it you wish to call me?" he questioned.
I look over every detail of him, thinking of a name that would fit him to perfection.
"Sebastian.." I whispered. I looked back up at him before falling back, his arms quickly reaching out catching me in midair. I allowed the darkness to take me in, allowing my body to go off into a dreamless sleep.
Sebastian lifted me into his arms taking in the setting around him. It's been over 100 years since his last young lord had handed his soul over. She had given him the same name as 'Ciel', only it didn't seem to be of any connection to her life, but instead looking into his stature.
She had a sharp accent proving he wasn't in London, but she also had a few jewels on her proving her high status. He decided to take her to the Phantomhive manor. He knows the building is still very much intact despite being abandoned, he can easily fix it back to it's perfection.
The young girl will wake up in a nice home instead of wherever she was running from.

The Oncoming Storm Part 17: Blackout
Liu Kang x Reader and Kung Lao x Reader (gonna do both, two paths!)
Oh no, you made things complicated. Lol. I'm having more fun writing Kung Lao than should be allowed. Hopefully you guys enjoy! And yes, I know this is tropey but I also don't care LOL, it's a fun trope.
Part 16 Part 18 Chapter Index
The hotel was surprisingly crowded. You weren’t sure what you’d expected but you hadn’t expected it to be bustling with tourists. There was a festival happening, you should have expected this. A bit outdated, the hotel was still clean and inviting. A welcome reprieve from the stone walls of Raiden’s Temple. You’d arrived early and still had to wait in line. Raiden had ‘transported’ you there which had been a wild experience in and of itself. You’d walked into a bolt of lightning and had come out in a quiet alley unseen.
It had been so long since you’d walked amongst the average civilian that it felt straight up bizarre to be walking along the streets of the modest city, especially in your hanfu. It was all you’d had, after all. No one looked at you twice other than to greet you politely. Most of the other folks staying at the hotel for the festival were couples on a romantic getaway which had made it instantly weird to be waiting in line with Kung Lao to check into your respective rooms.
Thankfully, the line moved quickly and once you’d checked in, you dropped off the few belongings you’d brought with you. The room was tiny with a single bed, a desk taking up nearly the rest of the room. Atop the desk was a television and beneath that was an old, ancient mini fridge. It would do well enough. This was the most technology you’d seen in weeks. Afterwards, you’d found Kung Lao and told him that you would meet him in an hour. You’d made note of a clothing store down the road and wanted to see if there was anything worth buying.
He, of course, decided to join you. No one trusted you alone anymore. He didn’t say it like that, but you knew that Raiden had told both him and Liu to keep an eye on you. You felt like a ticking time bomb.
Once at the shop you were disappointed to find that it sold mostly yukatas and kimonos. You supposed it was better than the flowy hanfu. At least you could pick out something that would be your own rather than something that had been handed to you.
Boy, you missed the internet.
You picked out a few pieces that you could work with a bit easier. Most of the hanfu were dresses or long flowy robes. Here you’d been able to find a few women’s kimonos that had hakama pants as an option. You had never been so excited to see pants in your life. You didn’t need the whole kimono, just the pants. Some constricted around the ankles while others were left open. You grabbed both and were extremely pleased.
“Sometimes, you’re a very simple woman.” Kung Lao had patted you on the back when you’d showed him the pants in excitement. You had to agree. In that moment you were very simple. Pants had brought you joy. You’d wandered away from him after that to find a few tops, belts, and jackets. Thankfully, you’d had your wallet on you when this had all begun so you had some money on you. In Raiden’s Temple, money hadn’t been necessary, so you were happy to spend it on the few things you did need.
They weren’t jeans and a t-shirt or even cute dresses, but it felt like a step in the right direction toward feeling like yourself again. You hadn’t realized how much it had bothered you until then.
Kung Lao had purchased just enough for the day in flattering red and black. That seemed to be his aesthetic though you could picture him in blues too for some reason. Then you made your way back to the hotel and to your rooms on the top floor. You had gotten rooms next to each other. You went to get changed and were happy with what you saw even in the half mirror on the desk. You stood on the bed to get a better look. Black hakama pants and a grayish-lavender and black top with a white sash tied around your middle. You then pulled your hair back in a ponytail and admired yourself in the mirror. Even though your hair was a mess you looked much more like yourself.
Your white roots had grown out a couple of inches now. It didn’t look bad, but it definitely didn’t look like it was on purpose either.
Oh well! You jumped off the bed and then left the room to find Kung Lao waiting for you, leaned against the wall next to your door. He had one foot propped against the wall, arms folded across his chest, hat obscuring his face as it often did. The clothing he’d bought wasn’t too terribly different from what he usually wore with the notable exception that he had sleeves which was truly a shame. He tilted his head up just enough to greet you before stepping away from the wall. You hadn’t left him waiting that long and yet he acted as though he’d been there for ages.
You noticed the jade ring from his usual outfit was woven into his outfit with the sash around his waist laced through it. It was kind of sweet that he always seemed to have it on him.
“Is that significant in some way? Special?” You asked, gesturing to the ring. He looked down at the ring in surprise and then nodded down the hall. You walked slowly through the hotel toward the stairwell.
“It’s a relic from my ancestor, the Great Kung Lao.”
“Oh, wow. About that, though… I’ve heard people mention him, but I had never heard the name before you. I know that he’s of some importance which has made you important…”
“I am incredibly important, thank you.”
“Yes, very. Keep talking.”
“He was the first champion of Mortal Kombat who had come from the Shaolin Order of Light. He defeated Shang Tsung and won the tournament.” Kung Lao seemed as though he had told this story a hundred times but was still proud to tell it. It was oddly sweet. “He was champion of Earthrealm for fifty years before the tournament was corrupted and he was killed. Even so, he is held in great reverence. He was a remarkable warrior.”
“Is that why you have a dragon mark?”
“Yes, that is why I have the mark. It’s also why I was sent away so young. I’d already been training long before I’d met you. When I left it was because it was time for me to go live at the temple.”
You stopped walking before the stairs and he stopped just in front of you and turned to face you. “Then why were you so bad when we would pretend to fight?”
“I held back. I wanted you to have fun too. Besides, it felt nice to be normal back then.” He laughed and you caught up to him and started down the stairs. “I was thinking that we should come up with a story as to why we’re here.”
“Should we?”
“Obviously. We need a reason to be here.”
“Other than the reason we actually have?”
“And when a bunch of strangers ask you why we’re here, are you going to tell them the real reason we’re here?”
“Point taken.”
“We need a cover.”
“Do we really though? I don’t remember ever having to justify my actions that intensely to strangers before. We can just be visiting.” You jumped down the last two stairs to the landing between flights. Pants felt great. Kung Lao seemed to either be overthinking your trip or grasping at straws to get to some end point. Or he was going to cause trouble. You would never forget the look that both Raiden and Liu had given him on their way out.
“I’ve been asked three times what brings me to Mount Osore during the festival. I came up with a lie on the spot but I’m no terribly proud of it or anything.”
“And what is this lie you came up with?”
“I said I was here on a date. Everyone else seems to be here on a date, so it was the first thing that jumped to mind.”
You rolled your eyes at him and he laughed in surprise, waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs. You caught up to him. “Really, Kung Lao?”
“What? It’s the first thing I could think of! The people asking me were on a date and so I stuttered that I was too.”
“Kung Lao, no.”
“Come on, Y/N.”
“Can’t we just say we’re visiting and that it’s no one’s business?” You walked into the lobby and he hurried in front of you and took your hands, clasping them between his. You sighed. “Would you…” The lobby was very crowded.
“I hate you so much right now.”
“Would you,” he continued, talking over you, “do me the honor of going on a cute little pretend date with me so that we can sneak into an ancient Buddhist Temple built within the caldera of a volcano so that we can uncover an ancient and possibly cursed artifact together?” You stared at him in disbelief, but it was taking every ounce of your energy not to burst into laughter. He was such a dork. “I will get down on my knees and ask you again if you don’t answer me.” He got down on his knees and you broke. Laughing, you pulled your hands free, grabbed his arms and tugged.
“Oh my god, get up, Kung Lao.”
“It’s a great cover, Y/N.”
“It is an exactly okay cover. But fine. I haven’t done something terribly embarrassing in a while, so I guess I’m overdue for this.” You agreed at least. He was right. It was a good cover considering this whole place was filled with couples. Besides, if it got Kung Lao to drop the subject then you would be happy to agree. The whole display had made your cheeks burn.
“Embarrassing, huh? Come on, Y/N. It’s not such a bad thing, is it? Could be worse looking guys to end up with, right?” He walked at your side again, making a teasing kissy face and leaning close to you. You leaned away with an awkward and nervous laugh.
“If you keep doing things like that then you are going to get smacked.”
“Worth it.” He held the door open for you and together you left the hotel. Outside a bus waited to take tourists to the shrine for the festival. People were already loading onto it. Kung Lao offered you his hand and you looked to him skeptically. He grabbed your hand anyway and then you walked onto the bus. “You’re going to have to get better at pretending.” You found seats near the back of the bus and even as you sat, he didn’t let go of your hand. You felt incredibly silly. Yet, it also made your heart flutter. As much as you had given him a hard time, you also happened to think it was an incredibly sweet and kind of wholesome idea.
Funny enough, you had thought of this moment before but in a much different context. Maybe in a life where your childhood together hadn’t ended so traumatically. Where you’d stayed close friends and he’d have asked you out when you were old enough. In a way, you felt like a silly schoolgirl, something you hadn’t felt in years.
If he hadn’t died then this was exactly where you would have wound up. Somehow that made you feel much less silly and you finally relaxed. Kung Lao pointed out several interesting things on the side of the road through the window and you listened to him chatter on until the bus was pulling up to the shrine. You waited for the others to get off the bus and then you walked ahead of Kung Lao and stepped off it.
The shrine was huge and it took your breath away.
So much so that it made you dizzy.
A river flowed before you then beneath a red bridge. To the left of the bridge there was a white beach lining the bluest and most artificial-looking water that you had ever seen in your life. Rocks were piled alongside the shore in strange formations. Beyond the bridge there was a stone path that led to the shrine in the distance, and it was lined with old lanterns. You walked to the edge of the stone path where the bus had dropped you off to try and get a better look at the water.
That was a teal color you had never seen before in nature. In your mind’s eye, you recalled your vision and it made your stomach drop. You took a step further and were suddenly grasped around the waist and pulled away from the edge of the stone. Then Kung Lao looped his arm in yours. “You looking to take a dip?”
You hadn’t realized that you had almost walked right into the river. You hadn’t been thinking. The water had bewitched you, it seemed. You needed to get a closer look at it but now that you’d been turned away from it, the feeling had gone. From there you could smell the acidity in the humid air. That was likely why it was so blue. “Pay more attention, okay?”
You weren’t sure what to say to him. It was surreal being there. This place was exactly the same as it had been in your vision but also years, possibly centuries had passed since then. The shrine buildings themselves were much larger than they had been then. They were even a different color. Your head was spinning as you tried to take in everything at once. It was an overload. You grabbed Kung Lao’s arm to try and ground yourself. You felt as though you were floating and the wind would take you away.
Kung Lao led you onto the bridge and at its apex you sat and watched the water trickle beneath it. He helped you lean your elbows against the railing and then placed a supportive hand on your back.
“It’s okay. Take a second.” He seemed to realize that you were having a difficult time. How could you explain that you were struggling to wrap your mind around being in a place where you’d had such a vivid and violent vision? You were grateful for him. Your heart was racing and you watched the water flowing beneath the bridge, over the rocks. Your stomach had dropped. It felt as though you were intimately familiar with this place, as though you had spent years there, but you had never once seen it before. At the same time, everything felt completely new. Your brain was waging war with itself. “You okay?”
“Yeah, this is just… surreal.” You were finally able to collect your thoughts enough to talk.
“You went a bit gray. Figured you needed a minute.”
“I appreciate it.”
“So, where do we go?”
“There’s a well inside one of those buildings.” You nodded to your right where the shrine was at the end of the stone path.
“Vague, but okay.” He peered to the right and then pointed. “It’s off limits.” From there you could see a series of ropes that blocked off the building from visitors. “Great.”
“It’s crowded enough here. I’m sure we can sneak in just fine.”
“Of course.” He leaned next to you on his forearms, hands clasped together. “This place is a little spooky.”
“It is. I read a brochure from the hotel lobby. The monks here believe that it’s the gateway to hell. The river beneath us is supposed to represent the Sanzu.” You pointed below you. It was a little spooky, you supposed, but it was also incredibly beautiful.
“I read about that. I also read that there are holy water bathhouses and volcanic cauldrons with crazy colored water.”
“Yeah, and a lake of blood.”
“I hate that, Y/N.” He stuck his tongue out at the idea. You laughed. He was too funny. He had this way of making you feel at least even about the big and often uncomfortable things sometimes. Other times he drove your anxiety through the roof. Thankfully, this wasn’t one of those moments. “What do you say that we get to sneaking in and find this thing so that we can have a bit of fun for the rest of the day, huh?”
“That sounds nice.”
He took your hand once again and you walked over the bridge and along the stone path. The lanterns were decorated for the festival along with the rest of the shrine. Monks walked about, greeting visitors and answering questions while explaining various attractions. Most visitors, and there were many, were straying from the temple in favor of the white sands or the volcanic cauldrons. You and Kung Lao walked until you reached the ropes before the shrine. You stood there for a time in the shade, waiting for your moment to sneak in unseen.
“Coast is clear,” you whispered and turned to keep watch while Kung Lao snuck into the shrine. Once inside, you waited for your opportunity and followed him. Inside, the building was ancient but to you it seemed oddly brand new. It wasn’t the same shrine that you remembered from your vision. Much had changed since that wicked man had been there.
No one was waiting for you inside the small entryway or in the room beyond. That seemed like the central room, with space for prayer and a dip in the center for dining. The floor was lined with tatami mats and the ceiling was high, windows on the second floor spattering sunlight throughout the room. Halls branched off in each direction and you suddenly felt overwhelmed with choice. It had seemed so much simpler in your vision.
“Lead the way but be cautious. We’re not alone.” Kung Lao spoke in a hushed tone, staying close to you but alert.
“Yeah.” You started through the room and down the closest hallway, checking to see if it was empty first. Kung Lao took your hand and you urged him along with you. Your stomach was in knots and his hand there continued to keep you grounded. Several times you encountered monks going about their business and you had to duck into other rooms or sneak back around corners. You somehow managed to remain unseen, having to huddle together in strange spaces and hide in enclosed areas. It would have been fun had it not been so damn frustrating.
None of it made sense! As you turned down another hall, you sighed in frustration. You’d wound up there twice already. Your gut kept sending you there and back to the central room but there was no indication that it was the same place that the vision had taken place in. Kung Lao suddenly pulled you back into the side room and held you against the wall near the door. There were footsteps in the hall, and you held your breath until they had passed. You made to go back into the hall, but Kung Lao pinned you in place.
“You’re leading us in circles.”
“I know. It’s hard to explain. It’s like someone’s moving everything around while we’re walking. It doesn’t make any sense. I think I’m going one way and then we’re back to where we started.” It was making you sick to your stomach, as a matter of fact.
“You can do this. Just focus.”
“Kung Lao, you have no idea what’s going on in my head right now. I am focusing.”
“You’re right I don’t. So, tell me.”
“I’m not sure that I have the words to explain that the room we’re looking for should be right around the corner but then it isn’t.” It really was disorienting to expect to be in one place and end up in another. “It shouldn’t have been this far back but also this place is ten times bigger than it had been in my vision.”
“I need you to try still.”
You were mixed up. It was like someone was moving rooms in your head and before you knew it, you had once again led him back into the central room which made both you and Kung Lao groan in annoyance.
“Oh good. We’re back. I was worried.”
“It should be right here, but everything looks so different!”
“It’s okay, Y/N. We’ll figure it out.”
“It’s not okay, Kung Lao. It should be right here. I wish I could just show you.” The frustration was radiating off you, you were sure. “I can’t-”
“Is someone there?” A voice from somewhere down the hall called and footsteps approached from a distance.
“Fu…” Kung Lao whispered and then grabbed you and searched for somewhere to hide. The closest hall was too far. You were caught. “Don’t panic.” He urged you to the wall with surprising care and you made a sound of surprise. What did he mean don’t panic? You were instantly panicking. Don’t panic? What was wrong with him? He leaned against you and tilted your chin up and his head toward you like he was going to kiss you, obscuring you both with his hat. “Act natural, Y/N.” His lips brushed against your cheek, just next to your lips. “I swear, you’re terrible at this.” You were stiff as a board, so he had every right to scold you, but also he was pretending to kiss you so what the hell were you supposed to do with that? What was natural in this case?
You gave him a swift but soft punch in the gut and he laughed against your cheek in return. That made you feel a bit better. He lifted his head just enough and you peered toward the door nearby, waiting for the monk that would inevitably kick you out. You could have had time to hide at this rate. Kung Lao’s lips were pressed against your cheek and they were soft even if it was just in a mock kiss close enough to your lips to look like you were sneaking a private moment.
You peered around the corner, thinking maybe you were in the clear. Kung Lao did the same and when you turned back to tell him that maybe the monk had decided to turn away, you found him extremely close to you. Intimately so. His dark eyes were serious and that always scared you for whatever reason. He tilted your chin toward him and all other thoughts slipped out of your brain.
What were you doing there? Where were you anyway? And why? Did it matter?
Not right now it didn’t.
His hand was on your chin, thumb brushing just below your lip, urging your lips to part just enough. You dared not breathe to break the tension of the moment. The sneaking and searching were gone completely from your thoughts. All that was left was the boy that you’d so admired in your youth grown into a handsome man with his hand against the wall at your side, the other inextricably lost below your lower lip.
His eyes were searching you, but you dared not look back into them for fear of what you might find, for fear of what it might reveal to you. His breath warmed your lips before they were on yours, parting them like a blossom in a soft and singular tender movement. A far superior kiss than the one he’d pretended to give you for the sake of saving your skin.
His lips were sweet. Not like sugar or candy, but sweet like the lingering taste of honey at the bottom of a cup of tea. It was a feeling of sweetness rather than a flavor. The moment was still and soft, his lips treasuring yours as though they were something sacred and special. They pulled back just enough from yours that you could feel your lips resisting to part as if they had minds of their own. His eyes were searching you still for answers and in wonder, but you didn’t dare meet them. Yet, you could feel his gaze and beneath your fingertips, that had betrayed you and now rested on his chest, you could feel his heart beating almost as hard as yours.
His breath graced your lips again, but you dared not breathe. You wanted to say something, even just a whisper of his name, but no words would come and you sat there, lips parted in waiting, avoiding his eyes, hand clutching the cloth at his chest, unsure of where you even were or why. This was Kung Lao.
Your Kung Lao.
A soft sigh escaped his lips as they were on yours again, but the softness was gone, though there was something about them that was still sweet even so. The force of his kiss pressed you against the wall, leaving you no escape- not that you wanted to escape. This was a moment that the ten-year-old inside your head had both longed for and not understood. You would have been a fool not to return his kiss, to taste and experience his lips the way that he was with yours and so you did. You kissed him and it was like a storm inside you beyond your control, building with electricity with every moment that passed.
There was a tender moment of acceptance where it felt as though time stood still. The soft moment faded quickly to frenzied desperation. There was no space left between you. Kung Lao was pressed against you, body warm and strong, hat nearly pushed back off of his head as he favored kisses over his possessions. Your hands moved up his chest, to the sides of his neck, fingertips then tangling in the short, messy tendrils of his hair at the base of his hairline. Your heart was doing flips, brain completely turned off to anything that had happened before this, even if somewhere in the distant reaches of your mind you could hear your instincts telling you that you had to stop. Whatever muting effect had been triggered in your brain had seemed to impact Kung Lao as well.
In one swift motion, fluid and strong, his hands were at your thighs and he had lifted you and pressed you against the wall, urging your legs to wrap around him. Your arms slipped naturally around his shoulders, pulling him closer between hot and increasingly sloppy kisses.
“Excuse me?”
Ah, yes. The monk. That was right.
You stopped kissing him.
Kung Lao’s lips finally pulled from yours and you could feel that your own were left slightly swollen from the desperation and passion of those precious few moments. When had you gotten so tangled up in each other? His chest was rising and falling against yours quickly and even though he’d pulled back his lips lingered close to yours as if to consider defying the monk further.
“My apologies.” The monk sounded embarrassed and bowed multiple times. “This area is closed to the public for the festival.”
You finally managed to regain your thoughts and untangled yourself from Kung Lao. You placed your feet on the ground and cleared your throat though your face was likely as red as his robes. He released you from his grip though he made no effort to step away. You swallowed the lump in the back of your throat and forced your brain to work.
“Is it?” You sounded surprised and were grateful that you had. You hadn’t expected to be a very good actor after all that, but you had been surprised to be interrupted and also confused as to where your mind had gone. It was more feigning innocence than lying. The monk nodded and looked as though he sincerely felt bad for interrupting you. “I’m sorry. We had no idea.”
“It’s no worries. I will happily escort you back to the festivities. Follow me.”
“Sorry about that.” Kung Lao, who you had never seen at a loss for words, seemed to finally regain himself. Just like that, he was back to the goof he’d been when you’d first arrived. “We were just sneaking off to have a private moment. Didn’t realize it was off limits.”
“It happens all the time. You’d be surprised.” The monk led you back through the central room and into the entryway. You elbowed Kung Lao as you followed the monk and he laughed beneath his breath. Once outside the monk bowed to you and then left you alone. You leaned your head back and stared into the sunny blue sky with a sigh. You needed a new plan. That one had gone off the rails in a way you hadn’t expected.

Hawk X Reader
Warnings? Language and fighting! Spoiler for season three last episode!
Final Strike
Tumblr media
You would be lying if you said everything with Cobra Kai, Miyagi Do, and Eagle Fang wasn’t hectic. Robby joining Cobra Kai, Hawk coming back on the good side which was a good thing considering you finally had your Eli back.
Though he may be in the form of Hawk, he was still your Eli before karate. It was just another normal hot and sweaty day in Encino LA, training you did not want to do but it was very much needed seeing as the all valley tournament was coming up in less than a couple months.
You needed all the training you could get seeing as you were going to have to go up against Cobra Kai. Krease was teaching them how to kill and strike where it hurts, not karate.
Grabbing your gym back full of extra clothes, and a couple water bottle's you head for your front door getting ready to walk to Miyagi DoJo where, Johnny and Daniel finally came together. Combining both Eagle Fang and Miyagi Do together.
You wondered how it was going to work, both Daniel and Johnny had different karate styles but you knew they would come through eventually. Well they would have to if you guys wanted to show Cobra Kai who the bosses were and win the all valley tournament.
Closing the front door you make your way down the steps of your porch walking on the sidewalk. Suddenly your phone buzzes signaling you got a message.
Grabbing your phone out of your bag you look at your Home Screen to see a text from none other than your beautiful boyfriend Eli.
Which read 'hey love, what time are you coming to the DoJo' even though he called you nicknames through texts you still couldn’t help the fluttering feeling in your chest and stomach.
You were about to reply before a black jeep comes flying with blaring music your way, it slams on breaks preventing you from the walking or going around.
Putting your phone in your bag you look up furrowing your brows as to what was going on. Soon you see Tory, Kyler, and the other gang of Cobra's open the doors and rush out slamming the doors back shut. The one person you didn’t see was Robby which confused you but you were sure you were going to have to fight so that was the least of your worry’s as of now.
"Hey b*tch, where do you think you’re going~" Tory says smirking as they all swarm you in a circle.
"None of your business" you say back, cursing yourself for your back talking....in a way.
She laughs evilly "oh, I know where you’re off to. With those little, Eagle fangs and Miyagi do quitters" she says walking closer.
"Well we’re going to give Hawk something to remember for turning on us" She says before right hooking you.
That was the final strike for you, you were going to give her a taste of what she gave to Sam. You run towards Tory pushing her against the jeep, breaking the little circle they created around you slamming her back into the truck creating a noticeable dent on the side.
Turning you around Tory throws you to the ground kicking your sides, as do the others. You put all of the pain aside in using your feet kicking it under Tory's causing her to fall.
Rushing back up while all the other Cobras help Tory up you get in a fighting stance.
"You’re dead b*tch" She yells as launches for you pushing you into a tree causing you to groan arching your back from the pain.
Giving up you throw her on the ground once more as your body slides down the tree on it’s on, tired. Tory gets up with a groan, "pathetic" she says as she rolls up her sleeves "goodnight" she smirks as she punches you in the face one last time causing your head to hit the tree.
Falling to the side your vision becomes blurry "come on, we’re done here" Tory says to the other Cobras before loading up the jeep and driving off.
Groaning you roll over on your back, trying to get your vision back to normal. You stay there for a few minutes, your whole body sore. Deciding you should finally make your way to Miyagi do you slowly get up.
Feeling a pain rush through your back "that’s definitely leaving a mark" you say to your self as you limp over to your back bending over to pick it up.
Definitely not the kind of limp you wanted, you keep walking down the side walk. Probably getting side glances from people while doing so.
The walk to Miyagi do was only a couple minutes but it felt like hours. Opening the gates you see both Johnny, and Daniel training their classes together.
Eli’s the first to notice you, as you drop your bag off to the side "Y/n!" He calls out, running to your side catching everyone’s attention causing them to gasp.
"I’m fine" you say as Hawk comes up to you grabbing your hands as you almost fall, feeling your head spinning around in circles.
"Obviously you are not" He apposes as he helps you to a chair sitting toy down, going to grab you a water.
"Y/n? What happened?" Daniel asks worriedly.
"Oh nothing, just Cobras being cobras" you say hissing as your back cracks in places you never knew could crack.
"Wait was Robby in on it?" Johnny asks coming closer.
"No, he wasn’t there. Doubt he knew" you respond bluntly as Eli rushes back out handing you a water bottle.
"What happened?" He asks sharply.
"Cobra Kai happened" Daniel responds to Eli so you don’t have to, noticing your look of pain.
A twist of anger contorts on Hawks face "I’m going to kill them" he says gritting his teeth as he gets up staring for the gate.
"No Eli" You call out for him rushing towards him, ignoring the screaming pain.
"Please don’t" you say stopping him.
"I just want you to stay here with me please" you plead as he turns around, all that anger gone now as his face softens up.
"I-I’m sorry, they just- I- they can’t just hurt you like that and expect to get away with it" He mumbles looking down as you walk over to him pulling him into a much needed hug.
"I know, but there’s nothing we can do right now" You mumble into his chest as his scent hits your sense of smell to which you smile at.
He walks you over to the chair sitting down, pulling you in his lap running his hands through your hair. "I love you Y/n, and I’m sorry I wasn’t there. It’s my fault" he says guiltily.
"Hey, no it’s not you didn’t know, I didn’t know" you say grabbing a hold of his cheek and placing a small gentle kiss upon his beautiful silky lips.
No matter how many times you do that his cheeks will always turn a shade of red.
"I’m sorry this happened Y/n" Daniel says walking up to you.
"It’s okay Sensei LaRusso, Sensei Lawrence it wasn’t either of your faults" You say going to stand up, but Eli stops you not wanting you to hurt yourself anymore. Giving you puppy eyes as to say be careful you smile.
"It’s okay Eli, I’m okay" you say causing him to release you so you could make your way to Daniel.
Once you do Daniel enguffles you in a tight warming hug, causing you to let out a surprising Yelp only before hugging back.
"I’m sorry to Y/n" You hear Johnny say after a long silence.
Pulling away from the hug with Daniel you limp over to Johnny pulling him into a hug catching him off guard only to smile softly and hug you back slowly.
"It’s okay Sensei, it wasn’t your fault" You reply giving Johnny a sense of relief.
"Now give me my girlfriend" Hawk says sternly causing the whole class including Daniel and Johnny to burst into laughter.
"I’m coming, I’m coming" you joke as you pull away from the hug limping over to Eli.
"Grandma" Johnny jokes trying to lift up the tension more.
It worked.

Devil’s Advocate (Tenet) Neil x Reader
Chapter 1: Paper Planes
A/N: Hey guys!! Here is the first chapter of the fic, “Devil’s Advocate”!!! I’m excited about this, and writing it is getting me through a lot right now, so I hope you all enjoy it too! Here ya go :)
Summary: After a traumatic experience, you are forced back into the field with Neil, but the mission is personal and possibly too close for home for you to handle. Neil helps you through it, but you’re not sure if you can get the job done.
Warnings: Violence, guns, death, drowning, injuries, angst, cursing, and yes, luckily some fluff :)
Word Count: 4,405
Tumblr media
The weight of your cold, dark black glock settles heavily into your right hand as you pick it up off the table to your left. You secure a pair of noise cancelling headphones around the top of your head. You load the gun and cock it.
The headphones blast with music, helping you to concentrate on the man-shaped target in front of you.
Everyone’s a winner, we’re making our fame.
Bonafide hustler making my name.
You extend your gun out in front of you as you shut your left eye tightly to aim.
All I wanna do is…
BANG BANG BANG BANG
And uh, and take your money.
You lower the gun as the target pushes forward towards you. You can’t help but smile confidently as you look at the deep hole you made in center of the paper man. You reach to take it down, but a warm hand grabs onto your shoulder, squeezing you tightly, freezing you in place.
The hand twists your body slightly, just enough to make you turn around. You reach up to the top of your head and slip your off headphones, letting them rest around your neck.
A charming, wild grin pulls at Neil’s lips as his gaze meets yours. “That was bloody incredible!” He shouts. There’s a bright flash of excitement in his eyes. His hands gesture towards the hole you made in the wall. You had aimed perfectly, shooting in the exact same spot each time you pulled the trigger.
“Thanks,” You say back as your cheeks flush with heat despite the boost of confidence rushing through your veins from Neil’s praise. A compliment from Neil means a lot to you, even though you’ve known him for years. He was your closest friend and made sure to tell you the truth, even when it hurt. That honesty grounded you in the chaos of your life. He was a constant, a steadfast star in your sky.
Neil chuckles a bit as his eyes look down to the headphones hanging around your neck. You don’t hear how loud your music still is. Your mind is too focused on the sound of Neil’s laugh.
M.I.A Third World Democracy
Yeah I got more records than the KGB
So uh, no funny business!
“A bit loud, isn’t it?” Neil laughs again as he steps closer to you. He brings his hands to the back of your neck, his fingers brushing lightly against your skin as he grabs the headphones and slips them off of you.
That smile, You think before mentally slapping yourself across the face. Snap the fuck out of it.
Your feelings for him were always at the back of your throat, clawing for supremacy, climbing up to the tip of your tongue, threatening to force your mouth open to spill your guts. Somehow, even after all these years, you were able to hold back. Maybe it was because you didn’t need more than what you had with him. That was an absolute lie. Maybe it was because he never belonged to anyone else. There was no need to be jealous. Maybe it was because there was a certain, silent promise of belonging to each other despite the lack of an official relationship.
That was more like it.
Neil puts the headphones back on the table as the next song plays. The absurdly loud riff of the guitar pulls you back into reality.
Fell in love with a girl,
I fell in love once and I almost completely.
She’s in love with the world
But sometimes these feelings can be so misleading.
Blushing again, you reach into your pocket and pull out your phone to press the pause button. The music stops and you smile shyly. A creeping sense of embarrassment crawls into your stomach. You were beyond happy that Neil was able to see you in your element, and usually his presence made you feel good, but his attention was overwhelming at times. Now, the confidence that settled in before had been sucked from your soul and replaced with a racing heart and a cluttered mind.
You push thoughts of Neil to the back of your head. “So what’s up?” You ask, setting the gun on the table next to your headphones. You casually slip your hands into the pockets of your baggy jeans. You mentally acknowledge that you may be overdoing the whole ‘playing it cool’ thing in front of Neil, possibly even to the point that he might be able to see straight through your act.
“Well,” Neil pauses. His hand moves to the back of his neck. “I’ve got some news,” Neil says finally, his smirk falling from his lips. Your heart skips a beat. He looks unbelievably nervous. His brows furrow cautiously, knowing his next words are going to achieve some sort of poor reaction from you.
You gulp anxiously and nod. “W-what is it?” You stutter as you predict the words Neil is about to say.
I can’t fucking do this, not yet.
Neil steps closer to you and grabs your hand in his. The touch was familiar but still shocked you to your very core, your nerves tingly frantically under his fingers.
Please don’t say it, please don’t fucking say it.
Neil’s voice is quiet in anticipation of your panic. “The boss, he wants you back in the field…” Neil trails off, continuing on about something in London, something about him going with you. You feel your chest tightening. You’re not listening anymore. You’re too focused on what happened last time, too focused on the trauma, too focused on the tears, the shouts, the deaths.
“NO!” You scream, your long, HDM hung heavily in your hand. The lifeless body of a new recruit crashes to the floor.
You raise up your arm and cock the gun. You’re ready to aim and shoot, but two large men grab your hands. Your gun falls to the ground with a clatter.
The man with the dark hair cackles cacophonously. He shakes his head, his piercing emerald eyes dissolving your soul as he picks a new body to hold roughly in his arms. A revolver presses tightly against the person’s head. You can’t tell exactly who it is, as there’s a burlap sack covering their face. There are 8 other people in a semi circle, each appearing the same as the last, tied up in a chair with a burlap sack hiding their identity.
“What?” He shouted barbarically, his voice echoing against the silver, metal walls of the chamber. “You think your fucking screams can get you out of this?” He grinned maliciously, licking his lips as he cocked the gun. Tears roll down your cheeks.
You are helpless.
You are useless.
“(Y/N),” The voice of the person cries out, knowing that their fate is already sealed. It was a woman’s voice, and you felt a bit guilty as you prayed to God that it wasn’t Wheeler.
BANG!
The lifeless body slumps into the chair. You whimper, stifling a sob in the back of your throat.
The man with the dark hair moves onto his next victim. You struggle, trying to shake off the two men holding you back. You look around the room, searching for something, anything to get you out of this.
The man’s face lights up with malignant excitement, sensing that his next kill would hurt you the most.
Fuck, no no no no no, You think to yourself. You could recognize those stupid, posh little black dress shoes anywhere. You knew the curves of his body, the shape of his hands. Blood dripped down his neck from the cut on his forehead he had gotten earlier.
Neil.
“Please,” You beg. “Don’t touch him. Just kill me instead.”
The man with the dark hair only grins more widely now. “Darling,” He snarls. You cringe at his use of the nickname. Neil usually was the one to call you that. “Your begging only makes this more fun for me. In fact, it makes me want to kill you even less, just so you have to live with the image of everyone you care for dying in front of your very eyes for the rest of your life.” His cold words send shivers down your spine.
He maneuvers differently around Neil, as he grabs the bottom of the burlap sack and removes it from his face.
Neil’s blue gaze meets yours. You heart feels like it’s being stepped on as it sinks deeply to the bottom of your chest. You can barely breathe now. You huff, trying to keep your sanity, trying to find a way out of this fucking mess.
“I figured you would want to watch the life drain from his pretty little face, (Y/N),” The man retorts. You shake your head violently. You look left to right, searching for some sort of weakness in the two large men that were keeping you in place. You notice a brace around the knee of the man on your right.
Thank God for shorts, You think to yourself.
The man with the dark hair raises the revolver to Neil’s right temple.
“(Y/N),” Neil mutters. “I l-,”
Before Neil can get his last words out, you raise your right leg, bending it in and snapping it out at the back of the man’s knees, launching him forward. With your right hand now free, you sucker punch the man to your left square in the nose. You round house him in the stomach, sending him backwards. You grab your gun off the floor and aim it back to the man with the dark hair.
The man chuckles evilly. “You shoot me, and I shoot him. It’s really as simple as that.” Your heart pounds in your chest.
An idea suddenly dawns upon you. You shift subtly enough so that the man doesn’t catch on to your train of thought. The gun is already cocked, all you need to do is pull the trigger.
BANG!
“Fuck!” The man cries out, stumbling forwards into the center of the semi circle as he releases Neil from his grasp. His gun falls to the floor. You turn away sharply at the realization that you blew his hand off.
You run over to Neil first, quickly untying his hands and setting him free. He starts untying everyone else and you walk over the the man with the dark hair. You catch a quick glimpse of Wheeler, and sigh in relief that she’s safe.
You breathe in hard and part your lips. “Don’t you dare ever fuck with me or my team again,” You pause, kicking the man in your ribs. There’s something extremely personal about your tone.  He grunts in response. “Now tell me where Edgar is keeping the weapons. And tell me where the fuck the lab is, you prick.”
He chuckles, breathing shallowly. “Prick?” He pronounces the word articulately. “That’s no way to address your uncle.”
“Fucking answer my question ass hat!” You shout, aiming your gun at his head. With another swift kick to the stomach, he curls up in a ball, clutching at his core. You cock your gun again, ready to shoot. Neil rushes to your side, giving you a look that implored you to let him finish before you blew his brains out.
“F-fine,” He stutters. “It’s in London.” He gives you a set of coordinates, and Neil takes them down. “I suppose I should tell your father that you’re calling him by his first name now, hm?”
“No, you won’t be getting the chance to,” You say.
You pull the trigger.
BANG!
You hear someone in the distance calling your name.
Two slender, toned arms wrap around your back, resting on your waist as they pull you into an embrace. The smell of Neil’s musky, cinnamon and citrus cologne heightens your senses and brings you back down to Earth.
Your breathing slows down a good deal as you press your face into Neil’s chest. His right hand comes up to the nape of your neck, and he begins to rake his long fingers through your hair.
“Are you alright, (Y/N)?” Neil whispers in your ear.
You swallow roughly. “No,” You say without even needing to think. “I’m not ready yet. I can’t leave Headquarters yet. I’m just not ready.” You feel tears begin to swell in your eyes and you bite down on your lip, hoping to keep them at bay. It had only been a month since you had killed your own uncle. He was a piece of shit, but that didn’t make the situation much easier to deal with.
It had only been a week since you watched two of your friends die. That part may have been the hardest for you to swallow.
Neil shakes his head and breaks away from you bit, just enough to get a good look at you. “You’re ready, (Y/N).” His voice is calm and reassuring. “And unfortunately, you don’t have a choice. We have to leave for the airport in,” Neil pauses, checking his silver watch, “45 minutes.”
“W-what?” You gasp. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I just found out a few minutes ago,” Neil admits. “If I knew earlier, I would’ve told you.”
You nod, believing him entirely. “So we’re going to London? To the coordinates?” You ask, looking up into Neil’s ocean eyes. You could feel yourself beginning to drown in them, just as you always were.
Neil simply nods back. He rests a hand on the center of your chest, feeling your heartbeat quicken with anxiety. “It’s just going to be you and I for a few days, and then everyone else will join when we confront…” He doesn’t same his name. He doesn’t want to make you panic again. But you know exactly who he means.
Your father. Your heart hammers in your chest at the thought of him.
“It’ll be okay,” Neil’s comforting tone relaxes you a bit. “I won’t leave your side for a second,” He adds. You sigh audibly in relief.
You let a single tear slide down your cheek. “Thank you,” You whisper.
Neil pulls you into his chest again. “Anything for you,” Neil responds. You shudder at his words. Sometimes you could swear that he didn’t only see you as his best friend, but something more.
You let the ideas ruminate and run freely in your mind for a few seconds before shooing them away like pesky little children.
You take a step back, allowing a small space to fill between the two of you. “I guess I should go pack now.”
Neil instinctively closes the gap again. You can tell  that he’s worried you’ll break down, and you hate it, but his support feels nice. “Do you want me to go with you? I’ve been told I’m good company.” He grins and sends a wink in your direction.
The corner of your mouth turns up a bit into a half smile, and you let out a small giggle. He always had a way of making you smile, of making you feel good.
“Nah,” You say, smiling fully now. “I’ll be alright by myself.”
Neil nods and smiles back. “Alright. I’ll meet you in the lobby at two o’clock,” Neil says. His smile turns into a smug smirk, and he turns his back to you. His dress shoes tap against the floor as he walks away.
“Make sure to bring that silk pajama set you wore that time we went undercover in Monte Carlo,” He calls finally, wagging his pointer finger in the air. “I liked it.”
You felt heat rising in your cheeks at his words. You almost tripped over the completely flat ground as Neil’s chuckle echoed down the hallway.
————
You clutched the handle of your suitcase in your hands. You let it dangle in front of your legs, nervously bouncing it with your knees every few seconds. Your eyes searched the lobby for a head of fluffy blonde hair, but it was nowhere to be seen. You glance up to the analog clock above the front door.
1:59. You were early. You were always early, for everything. Being late made you too anxious. You never wanted to miss a beat.
The clock ticked 45 more times, and you counted each second. Finally, the sound of dress shoes echoed from down the hall. You looked past the reception desk to see Neil carrying a leather duffle bag in his right hand, and a bottle of water in his left.
He smiled, releasing your butterflies from their cage inside your stomach as he finally reached your side. You open your mouth to say something, but Neil cuts you off.
“Don’t try to tell me I’m late,” Neil remarks sardonically, his eyes drifting off of you and onto the analog clock. “You’re just always early.” His smirk tugs at your heart, and you can’t help but smirk back.
“I wasn’t going to say you were late!” You playfully smack his arm with your hand. “I was just going to tell you to be earlier next time.”
Neil grins and shakes his head. He brings his hand up to the small of your back and brushes lightly. Outside the front doors, underneath the awning, a sleek, jet black town car pulls up. You feel your breath hitch in your throat at the realization that it was time.
This was it.
Neil looks to you. “Are you ready?” His voice is reserved, almost as if he was scared to ask the question in the first place.
You nod once. “As ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.” You swallow your fear and let Neil guide you out the doors. He grabs your duffle bag out of your hand, and opens the already popped trunk, carefully placing the luggage inside. You go to open the door, but Neil beats you to it.
“I can open doors you know,” You say sarcastically, glaring disapprovingly in his direction.
Neil doesn’t seem to care. “A thank you would be nice, love,” Neil says, shooting a charming smile in your direction. His hand is still holding the door open for you. You step inside the car and look up at Neil.
“Thank you Neil,” You say mockingly. Neil smiles slyly and closes the door.
The car ride to the airport is relatively uneventful. Neil gave you the run down. He told you your cover, where you were staying, and the overall gist of the mission.
“So we’re married?” You ask, making sure you had heard that part of the plan right and hadn’t dreamt it up from a fantasy.
Neil smiles and nods. “We’re newlyweds, traveling the world together one city at a time.”  There’s a whimsy in his voice, almost as if he’s telling a fairytale. You can’t help but chuckle a bit, despite the anxiety growing in your stomach.
The car turns onto an exit ramp, and suddenly the airport is in plain sight. You shiver a bit, feeling the air around you growing colder and colder. You check the temperature gauge at the front of the car, and notice that he hasn’t changed at all. You wrap your arms around your chest, rubbing up and down along your body, hoping to warm up.
Neil’s smile fades away as he furrows his brows in concern. He wraps his right arm around your shoulders. You jump at the sudden warmth.
“Are you alright?” He asks as he brings his other arm up to wrap around you completely.
Your anxiety is begging you to tell him no. “Yeah, I’ll be okay,” You lie. Neil doesn’t buy it, and rightfully so.
Neil squeezes you tightly. “I know you’re not okay, you don’t need to lie to me,” He whispers. “I’m here for you, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Your eyes begin to well up, and a single tear rolls down your cheek. “Alright,” You sigh, wiping the tear away. You sniffle a bit, trying to clear your head in the process. The car rolls to a stop. “I’m ready whenever you are,” You say, trying to seem more confident than you actually were.
You open the door and slip out. The chaos of the outside of the airport takes you aback, despite the fact you had been in an airport millions of times before. Neil steps out behind you, and goes over to the trunk. He takes the luggage out and steps towards to you. You stare up at the massive building, petrified to enter.
Neil ticks his tongue on the roof of his mouth. “There’s not much time, (Y/N). We have to go inside now,” He says, his gaze staring into the side of your head. You refuse to meet his eyes, you’re too focused on the building, the mission, the future.
After a few seconds, you nod to Neil and walk into the airport. You and Neil only have one duffle bag each, and thus you could skip checking in any bags. He guides you over to security, which happened to be a breeze.
A short walk later, you approach the gate. There was a line of people waiting to enter, and you and Neil shuffled to the back of it. A few minutes later, a nice steward scanned your ticket.
“Alright Mr. and Mrs. Ryan, you’ll be in row 2, seats A and B. Have a nice flight,” He smiles, and gestures for you to enter the bridge to the plane.
Your heartbeat quickens as you take small steps. “N-Neil,” You stutter as you reach to center of the bridge. “I can’t do this. I really can’t do this. I mean it. I-I’m sorry I just can’t.” Panic is heavy in your voice. It feels as though the walls are closing in on you.
Neil puts the luggage down and brings you to the side of the bridge. He pushes strands of your hair out of your eyes. “It’s going to be okay,” Neil reassures. “You can do this. I’m said I’m not going anywhere, and I meant that.”
Neil picks the luggage back up, and guides you through the entrance of the plane and to your seat. You hesitantly sit down, quickly placing your hand on the armrest, wondering if there’s still time for you to run out of the door and back to headquarters. To your dismay, you watch the doors of the plane begin to shut. Neil wasn’t kidding before when he said there wasn’t much time.
He stores the luggage in the overhead compartment, and takes his place next to you. He notices that you’re still shaking, and he places his hand on top of yours and brushes your skin lightly with his thumb.
A comfortable silence rests gently between you and Neil as his hand remains on top of yours. Sometimes words aren’t necessary. You can get the idea of what someone means by their actions alone.
A few moments later, the captain makes an announcement, followed by a series of other voices sharing information. You're too wrapped up in your thoughts to pay attention to anything they have to say. Before you know it, the plane begins to move down the tarmac. It gains speed, and suddenly, you feel yourself being lifted in the air.
You shiver again, the anxiety becoming too much to handle. You try to ease into your seat in an attempt to calm down, but to no avail. You’re petrified and uncomfortable, a terrible duo of emotions to be faced with simultaneously.
Suddenly, you feel Neil’s warm hand leave yours. You watch in confusion as he lifts the armrest up, tucking it in between the seats. He lifts his arm, and wraps it around your shoulder, just like he had done in the car, and so many countless times before. You accept the invitation willingly, and snuggle into his side.
Minutes later, you’re fast asleep in Neil’s arms.
———
An evil chuckle echoes against the concrete and spreads down to the grassy beach below. “There’s no saving him now, (Y/N)!” A man shouts from the top of an overpass.
You look down and watch as a familiar figure waves their arms frantically underwater, trying to swim up to the surface, but they can’t. There’s a brick tied around each of their angles. Their dirty blonde hair floats freely in the water as they continue to sink to the bottom.
“N-Neil!” You shout, trying to step forward to dive in after him. But your stuck, tied against a chair, guarded by two large men. “Please, please stop this!”
The man laughs, ignoring your pleas. “This is what you get, (Y/N). You’re worthless, and you fucking know it. Don’t you ever forget it, darling.”
You shake side to side. The chair tumbles over and you fall into the dark, black, cold water. Your nerves are shot by the shock of the frigidness, and you can’t move.
“Neil!” You gargle, left to watch as he sinks to the bottom of the lake. “Neil!”
“(Y/N)?”
“Neil!”
“(Y/N)?”
Your eyes shoot open and you practically jump out of your seat. Your seatbelt pushes you down, keeping held tightly. You’re trembling. You can’t breathe at all.
“(Y/N),” Neil repeats. “It was just a nightmare, you’re okay.” He wraps his arms around you, bringing you tightly into his chest.
You bury your face into his white shirt, sobbing softly. His right hand reaches up to the nape of your neck, his fingers gently combing through your hair.
“I’m so sorry,” Neil whispers, his voice filled with kindness. “I’m so, so sorry, love.”
You whimper into his chest as pain explodes in your heart. “What am I going to do?” You mutter.
“Don’t worry about that,” Neil says, his kind tone persisting in each word he utters. “I’ve got you, it’ll be okay.”
It needed to be okay. You needed to be okay. You couldn’t risk any fuck ups, not this time. This was real. This was life or death.
This was the end of the world.
Or at least it could be.
“I’m going to fucking kill him for what he’s done to you,” Neil states, the kindness in his voice is replaced with anger and frustration. “I’m going to kill Edgar, I swear.”
You shake your head against his chest. “No…
“Leave that part up to me.”

A/n : I like royal aus leave me alone
Summary : With the plan in action to finally take down the king, you and Tom have a final talk before the battle for freedom, not before he has a vivid nightmare leaving him questioning if everything is really worth it to save his people.
Warnings : cursing, descriptions of blood, death (animals and people), violence,  floof and angst
Word Count : 4.2k
...
“Again,”
“But father-”
“I said again.”
Tom took a deep breath, rolling his shoulder muscle before loading his bow with an arrow, raising it up and drawing it back. He didn't want to release it, he already killed so many harmless animals that his father just left to rot, not even taking it in to use as food for the kingdom.
Sure, the rest of the animals of the forest would have a field day with the meat, but what was the point when they had the power to do it themselves? Maybe it was just the sick smile on his father’s face when he walked up to the dead corpse, kicking its limp body in victory. He could still feel the bile in his stomach threatening to rise when every arrow hit, killing the helpless animals.
“Shoot it Thomas,” His father whispered faintly in his ears, a harsh hand falling on his shoulder, “Shoot it in the heart,”
Tom held his breath, aiming the arrow at the animal before finally releasing, flinching at the sound of arrowhead puncturing the flesh. He looked down at the ground in shame, not wanting to see the dead animal bleeding out on the floor.
“Good job,” his father said, patting his shoulder, “She’s going to enjoy the pain,”
Tom grew confused at his fathers words, usually he wouldn't question his outlandish comments but the exhaustion creeping up his back took away the filter keeping his thoughts to himself, “I don’t know about that father,” he scoffed, ready to move on the next victim if that meant getting back to the castle early.
“Shame really, she was a beautiful one,” he continued, ignoring his son’s words, “But that’s what you get when you come into the wrong territory,”
Tom rolled his eyes, “Pretty sure we’re the ones who invaded them,”
“Still, I'm still powerful enough to let you do the work for me,” he cackled, “Powerful enough to make you kill your own friend or was she more than that?” he said slowly, his voice becoming dangerously low,“Y/h/c hair, y/e/c eyes and a spirit that lead to her demise,” his voice started to echo, “By your own hand,”
Tom’s eyes shot open, he looked back at his father before looking at the clearing where he shot the deer. Instead of the bleeding out animal he expected, he saw you, on your knees with an arrow sticking straight out of your chest.
“No,” he uttered, dropping his weapon and running to you, sliding to his knees as your body fell, limp in his arms.
“No, no, no,” he repeated, holding you close to his chest. The arrow melted away, leaving a hole in the middle of your body.
“If only you didn’t bring her into this,” his fathers voice continued to boom in the back of his mind as he shakily put his hand on your cheek, drips of water falling from his eyes and on to your skin, “If only you were not foolish enough to defy me!”
Tom tried his best to block out his father's voice, which was much easier than he expected when he looked down at your face. Blood seeping out of your nose with your eyes wide and blown without movement and your skin becoming dull and cold to the touch. He didn't care that the red liquid stained his clothes or his father’s hurtful words, all he cared about in that moment was you.
He clenched his eyelids together, “This isn't real, this isn't real,” he said to himself, rocking your body back and forth in his arms as he held you impossibly closer, “This- this isn't real,”
“Is...it?” you croaked, coughing up a wad of blood from your mouth, “Is- Is this not reality?”
“It can’t be,” he cried softly, shakily wiping the blood dripping down from your nose, “I won’t allow it,”
“B-but you d-did,” you began coughing again, “I’m dead,” your voice trailed off, “I’m dead because of-” you paused, your lip quivering, “because of you,”
Your head drifted to the side, your eyes becoming empty with no movement. Tom couldn't breath, his mind too busy trying to process your still body in his arms, your skin blotched with blood and the words that just spilled from your mouth. He sat in silence, completely in shock as the warm touch from your skin was replaced with the coldness of the snow falling from the sky.
“Don’t worry Tommy,” his father sneered, a hand falling on his shoulder just like moments ago, “She won’t be going alone,”
Tom raised his head, suddenly he wasn't in a dense forest but a large plain, bodies splayed all along the dry grass. They continued on for as long as he could see, disappearing into the distance. The ones closest to him he recognized, close colleagues and friends part of the rebellion, the same people he convinced years ago to join his cause having the same fate as you. When he looked back at your face, it was replaced with a dirty skull, the rest of your body just a pile of bones.
He pushed away the skeleton, crawling backwards when his father began walking over the corpses, kicking them aside like pebbles on a sidewalk.
“I thought I taught you well, I thought you were ready to be the future king,” His father made large steps towards him, his stance looming over him, growing and growing with each one. His boots hitting the floor shook the ground beneath him, keeping him stuck to the floor and unable to stand.
Soon his back hit the trunk of a tree, stopping him in his tracks as his father came closer and closer.
“All these men, they could've been safe, alive with their families,” he chuckled, “But now there dead, dead because of you,”
Suddenly his father grew, his gold tunic stretching, tearing off his chest as his skin morphed into a black mush. His eyes turned sharp and red, glowing as the wind began to blow harshly, taking away some of the black liquid, only for it to grow back, patching the menacing monster his father turned into.
But before it could swallow him whole, he shot up in his bed drowning in sweat.
His hand slapped to his chest as he steadied his breathing, the other supporting himself on his makeshift mattress of leaves and scraps of cloth. He quickly took off his shirt, throwing it off to the side as he bursted out of the tent, stumbling to the ocean.
As he reached the sand, he fell to his knees, his hands reaching for the water and splashing it on his face in a desperate attempt to rid his eyes of what he just saw, what he just lived through. But washing his face alone wasn't enough, your blood didn't just hit his face but his body, his clothes. He stood up shakily, walking slowly into the cold water.
As cold as your skin when you died in his arms.
He shivered at the thought, continuing to submerge himself in the ocean, feeling more and more at peace with each step. He walked until he was fully under, his body moving with the waves of the water, cleansing him from the night.
But his father’s sick smile haunted him, even in the tranquility.
It was the same smile he’d seen since he was little. He remembered his first memory of it, when he was only four standing out on the balcony as he watched him raise the taxes in the kingdom after the beheading of a guard who was conspiring against him.
His young brain didn’t comprehend what happened that day, but the days to come definitely showed the effects his father had on the people. He never traveled to the village often, but when he did he always managed to keep his head down, shame and guilt filling his mind at the clothes and jewels weighed down in his body when everyone else wore musty brown potato sacks.
The differences only became worse when he grew older, resenting his father more and more as he noticed the gap between him and his people, the rich and poor. He only ever kept the men who were useful to him, pushing everyone else aside as casualties of his power.
The last straw was when he was fourteen, when his father brutally murdered a man right in front of his family for not lowering the price of his wine. He ran into the woods that night, looking for an escape. But the shadows of the trees and rustle of the small animals made him even more scared and lost.
But that was when he found you running through the trees, giggling with a bunny in your arms. You spotted him cowering in the bush, offering your hand and your new pet as comfort. You were an orphan, a free spirit roaming the woods with the animals as your only friends. Later on he learned that you had a mentor who taught you your skills in swordsmanship only to lose a fight protecting you against his father’s guards.
You resented him at first upon seeing the emblem of the kingdom sewn into his clothes, but he gained your trust by ripping off the patch and stomping on it with his boots, offering you his companionship.
From there you two were inseparable, he snuck out to meet you almost every night either to talk, to train or to just stroll around, enjoying each other's presence. Sure, he had multiple friends back in the castle, he had his brothers who also joined him for the rebellion, but the bond he made with you was different to anything he’s ever had before.
You were the first person he went to when he started to conspire against his father. You were the person who helped him through it, who taught him things he never knew. You were his first everything, his first fight, his first loss, his first win, his first kiss and his first love.
He couldn’t lose you, anybody but you.
And seeing you, the blood, the look, the words spilling from your mouth. He couldn't help but think it wouldn't be just a dream, that his father would get to him, would change him back to the life of a royal and make him betray the only people he was able to call home.
He wasn’t ready to face his father, no matter how many times he told himself that he was just a person, in his eyes he was the black void he saw in his dreams. A monster that couldn't be defeated.
Before he could think further, his breath caught up to him making him choke.
He gasped as his face broke the water, flailing around his arms to stay up float. He didn't know how long he had been underwater, but it gave him enough time to come up with three conclusions;
That this rebelion wasn't going to work.
The fear of his father never left.
And he was going to loose you because he was to idiotic to keep you out of his father’s wrath.
He decided to lay in the water until the sun rose and his skin became wrinkly.
...
“They’re going to set up soldiers all around the walls, our objective is to break in without being detected,” your voice boomed through the cave, concentrating on the map drawn into the brown sand, “We have people on the inside prepared to give us armor and all the materials we need,” you looked up to the people around you, “I need everyone else on the outside, even with our intel, we don’t know what the king might have up his sleeve,”
Tom watched from the corner as everyone nodded their heads. He could see almost every emotion passing through their minds, fear, confusion, regret, determination. But it was too late for them too back out now despite whatever they may be thinking, it was too late for anyone. The plans have already been set, years of preparation for tomorrow couldn't go to waste.
“Any questions?” You leaned back on the rock you sat on, looking around at the people surrounding you. Nobody dared to say anything, only looking around to there fellow pairs, silently communicating with each other, “Great,” you took the silence as a yes, “get some rest everyone,” You looked up to him with a tired smile, “You’re going to need it,”
Tom looked on as everyone dispersed, walking with one another to their respective tents and beds for the night. Usually he would stay behind with you near the fire until it went out, talking about whatever came to mind. But this time he couldn't find the heart to approach you, images of his dream flashing through his mind every time he caught a glimpse of your face illuminated by the flames.
Images of your bloody face, the harsh words seeping out of your mouth along with his father’s words jabing at his chest, making it hurt more and more with every passing second.
To the point where he couldn't handle standing in your presence much longer.
He walked out of the cave, not caring for the people he bumped into on the way out. He could feel the weight on his chest leave as soon as he caught a glimpse of the sun leaving from behind the ocean.
Despite the pressing times, the location of your lookout was beautiful. A cliff located on the outskirts of the kingdom, near the waters where the docks were only a short trip away. Sure, it was risky to set up so close to the castle, but you insisted solely because of the view.
“Shouldn't you be sleeping with everyone else?” You said from behind him, your footsteps crunching the dry grass beneath it.
“I could say the same for you,” he replied, keeping his gaze on the sea, he knew that he couldn't face you yet, but he didn't have the heart to walk away from a conversation, “You out of all of us need it,”
“We all need it Tommy,” You sighed, waking up beside him with your arms crossed, “Tomorrow is-,”
“-a very important day, I know,” he nodded his head playfully, “You’ve said it to me hundreds of times today Y/n/n, I’m surprised you didn't include it in your little speech,”
“Did you not like it?” You teased, “I thought it was quite good,”
“I’ve heard it so many times i’ve become numb to it at this point so I can't really say,” he chuckled, dropping his head to the floor, “But for your ego, it was amazing,”
“Thank you,” you said smugly, “You would have done well to you know, instead of brooding in the corner,”
“Your the spokesman here, not me,” he grinned, “I’m the one who has to safe your ass when it goes poorly,”
“I’m sorry, was i not the one who had to teach you how to hold a fucking sword properly?”
“I’m good with a sword!”
“Against a hundred men?”
“Well-,” he cut himself off, thinking of the odds in the situation. He had skill, but he was no wear as agile with a sword as you were. That, and bows weren't made for close combat.
“Thought so,” you smirked when he kept silent, pulling out a blade from your belt and twirling it around in the moonlight. You jotted it in his direction, giggling as he flinched away from the weapon, “Seems all of my training has been for nothing,”
“I’m not scared of the blade, I’m scared of you there’s a difference,”
“Then I take that back, I’m doing my job just fine,” you smiled, putting away your weapon,“Look, I have the sword and you have the arrows,” you shrugged, nudging his side with your elbow, “We make the perfect team,”
“Yeah,” he sighed, looking off at the sea, “Perfect team,”
You bit your lip, looking off into the distance with him. Tom was never one to express his emotions often, he always kept up his reputation of being a stone cold leader. But in your eyes, he was as easy to read as a children's book. You knew when he was holding back, the stiffness in his posture, his subtle lean away from you. You knew that if you leaned in to take his hand in comfort, he would deny it.
Even this morning, you noticed his hesitation to approach you with his usual hug, instead he gave you a half hearted smile before taking his horse for a ride in the nearby field. He didn't come back till sun set, waiting till the meeting to even be in the same room as you. You were surprised he didn't walk away when you approached him by the cliff, but you were grateful that he didn't.
“Everything alright?” you started, looking at him in hopes that he would make eye contact.
“You already know the answer to that Y/n,” he sighed, passing his hand over his face.
You nodded, pushing your hands into the pockets of your pants, “Well, are you going to tell me about it or just stand around stand around like a little gremlin,” you tried to make a joke but it fell flat.
Tom opened and closed his mouth, his face twisted from worry to anger to sadness. It was hard to keep up with only the side profile you saw.
“I had a dream,” he finally mumbled, letting out a deep sigh, “Well, more like nightmare,”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“I-” he ran his hand through his hair, “I don't know?” he paused, “I guess, I’m just having second thoughts about this, about all of this, ”
Your first instinct was to drill him about what he was thinking, that second guessing himself the night before you stormed the castle was stupid, irresponsible and a risk to the whole operation. But this wasn't some random person part of your people, this was Tom, your best friend, alliance and closest person you had.
“What happened?” you whispered, wanting nothing more to take his hand and pull him in a hug, “Tommy-”
“It was about you,” he finally turned to face you, his eyes red, ready to burst into tears, “It was about you, and my father and everyone who walking into this fucking mass suicide,”
You stayed silent, waiting for him to continue.
“There were bodies Y/n, bodies of everyone and my dad he- he-,”
“Hey, hey, hey,” he took his face in your hands, rubbing the tears that began to spill from his eyes.
“I just don’t understand,” he shook his head, “Why can’t we just leave, build a new life away from everything,”
“We can’t leave everyone behind,” you said softly.
“They have a choice whether they want to stay or not in the kingdom! Why should we risk our lives for there's!”
“You and I both know that they don’t have a choice Tom, not when your father is in rule,”
He sighed, licking his chapped lips, “I know, I know,” he put his hands on top of yours, “I just wish there was another way,”
“Me too Tommy,” You pulled him into a hug, his face burying itself in the crook of your neck, “But the way that I think it, if everything happens the way it’s supposed to, we could finally have the freedom we deserve. We just need to hang in there, you need to hang in there, okay?”
“I will,” he mumbled into your shoulder, “I’m just-” his breath hitched, “I’m scared of my father Y/n, I’m scared of what he’s capable of,”
“But we’re capable of more,” you pulled back, whipping the excess tears from his eyes, “We’ve been planning this for years Tommy, for years we’ve stood on the sideline watching as he terrorized the people of his kingdom, the kingdom that is rightfully yours,” you smiled, “If anything, he should be more scared of you,”
Tom scoffed, “I fine that hard to believe,”
“Well it’s true,” his hands moved to your waist, squeezing gently as you continued, “You’re no longer that scared little boy from years ago Tom. You’ve grown so much in not only your skills but your leadership. All these people have stuck with you because they believe in you, you made them believe that a life of freedom is worth fighting for,”
“That wasn't all me-”
“Tom, you convinced me that our freedom was worth fighting for, you’re the reason I’m here,” you brought your forehead against his, “You’re a natural born leader Tommy, and I have no doubt in my mind that when you face your father all fear will go away and turn into the righteous leader your made to be,”
Tom looked at you with glistening eyes, his lips slightly parted as he took in your words, “Do you really think so?”
“I know so,” you whispered.
“Y/n, I-”
“You don’t need to say anything,” you smiled, “I just- I just wanted you to know that,” you chuckled awkwardly, releasing how close the both of you had gotten.
You moved to pull away but his hands on your hips kept you still, pulling you even closer against his chest, his breath hot against your face.
You’ve always had those feelings about Tom, the butterflies flying in your stomach every time you talked. Your words became short when he looked into your eyes with his deep brown orbs.
But you always pushed it aside, for the country, for your people and the fear that he wouldn't feel the same.
“When- when this is all over,” he started quietly, “I’m not taking the crown Y/n, I can’t after everything we’ve been through, you know this,” he sighed, “I’m suppose to tell you this after the rebellion but, I found a cottage in the woods near the rivers, spent time cleaning it and i’m planning on living there for a while, at least after Harry takes my place on the throne,” he held his breath, “And I want you to come with me,”
You stood speechless at his suggestion. To be honest, you didn't know what you were doing after the rebellion was over. For most of your life you were so focussed on the outcomes of tomorrow that you never spent the time wondering what might happen after.
But one thing you knew for sure was that you weren't leaving your people, were ever they resided, you would stay with them. And that included Tom.
You were shaken out of thought when he stepped back, taking your silence as a nice way of telling him no. Before you could say anything though, he started rambling.
“You don’t have to of course, I’m sure you probably have your own plans after everything but I just thought I’d let you know,” he scratched the back of his neck, laughing off his nervousness and the rejection.
“How close is the cottage to the kingdom?” you asked, taking his hand to keep him from backing away any further.
“On horseback, maybe an hour ride?” he said.
You smiled, looking down before looking back up at him. You pulled him back against your chest, throwing your arms around his shoulders, “That sounds reasonable,” you giggled at his shocked face, “As long as were close by, I don’t see the issue with it,”
Tom let out a breathy laugh, wrapping his hands around your waist and hugging you tightly. He lifted you up in the air, spinning you around as you both erupted in giggles. All thought of war and fighting left your minds when he settled you back down, keeping eye contact as he smiled wider than you’ve ever seen.
WIthout thinking, you pushed your lips against his, immediately regretting it when he froze. But before you could pull away, he relaxed, pulling you closer and molding his lips with yours.
His lips were rougher than you imagined, dry against your skin but you could have cared less. Your fingers moved to tangle themselves in his dirty locks, smiling when he groaned into your mouth as you tugged on the strands, deepening the kiss. He passed his tongue on your bottom lip, asking for access which you granted, letting him explore your mouth for as long as he pleased. When he finally pulled away, he took your bottom lip between his teeth, pulling it gently.
“I’ve been waiting so long to do that,” he grinned, going back in to kiss the corner of your mouth.
“Took you long enough,” you giggled, nuzzling your cheek against his chest as you hugged him tightly, not wanting to let go.
Tom only tightened his arms, keeping you as close as possible. He didn’t know what the future held, he didn’t know if you’d both survive the fight tomorrow. But the one thing he knew was that right then, in that moment, he had everything he needed right in his arms.
And maybe, just maybe, things would be alright.
“We’re going to get through this Tom,” you mumbled.
“We are,” he said, resting his cheek on the top of your head, “We will, all of us will,”

Writer’s Month 2021 - Day 4 - Play
(Clark and Bruce’s first meeting - what if it isn’t Lois but Bruce who investigated Clark first? Based on Man of Steel (2013).)
Clark flew down the pavement, his legs pedalling furiously. His bag, slung sideways, bounced crazily against his back and his tie flapped a mad dance past his face.
Gosh, he was so late!
Grimacing, Clark pedalled even faster. His bicycle raced down an incline, adroitly swerving round a couple and the man yelled curses, a fist raised at him.
“Sorry!”
Clark yelled back, conscience twinging. He hadn’t want to take the bike but his earlier antics had left him without a choice. His saving of a cat, fallen off the tracks, had resulted in a torn jacket and him missing the train into downtown. Not wanting to look a mess on his first day of work, Clark had then dashed home to change his clothes and was now racing to get to the Daily Planet on time.
He could have flown, using his superpowers. But Metropolis was new to him and he had yet to figure the city out. Caution. That was what Pa had drilled into him so until he knew where the safe spots were, Clark didn’t want any risks. He was so looking forward to this new phase in his life and it wouldn’t do to have his secret identity exposed.
Clark Kent, the reporter. He grinned, excited and anticipatory. Then a quick look at his watch had him in a panic. Five minutes left!
Veering round a corner and frightening the wits out of four kids, Clark caught sight of the Daily Planet – its signature globe perched on the top. Almost there, just one more street to cross. Heaving a sigh of relief, Clark knew that he could make it.
Unfortunately, as he was about to zip across what was an empty street, Clark heard the roar of an engine and s sleek sports car shot past at him. With a shocked yell, he hauled his bicycle up, body twisting to avoid the car. Instinct caused him to tap on his super strength and the bicycle rose up like a horse rearing on hind legs. Clark fell on its back and his loosened grip sent the bicycle sailing over him, upside down and wheels still spinning. The front hit the pavement, somersaulting the bicycle before the whole vehicle crashed into the railing. Clark heard the crack of metal breaking and his heart sank. His new bicycle was definitely wrecked.
Thankfully, no one was near him to suffer any collateral damage. There were a few passers-by on the other side but upon seeing that Clark was pretty much intact, they continued their way, looks of sympathy in their eyes.
Clark, a hand grasping his arm as if it was hurt, shakily got onto his feet. It was just an act – a necessity to hide the fact that he was actually invulnerable and therefore, uninjured. His eyes, though, were seething with anger as he glared at the culprit who had just got out of his car.
Sauntering towards him with designer glasses hiding his face and hands tucked into tailored pants, Clark detested him immediately. There was not an ounce of apologetic vibe as the man came to a halt before him. His uppity you’re-not-worth-my-time stare, snapped something within Clark.
“Shouldn’t you apologise!”
“Shouldn’t you have watched where you’re going?”
Clark clenched his fist, the urge to do some damage, extremely strong. But the voice of his Ma in his head, stayed his hand. It was not worth it, like his Ma said, to sully his hands on such a load of horseshit.
Turning away, Clark was about to ‘limp’ to his bicycle when the man called out, voice haughty.
“Wait.”
The man drew out his wallet and took out a name card. He then flipped it at Clark and it hit Clark’s chest before dropping to the ground.
“I’ll pay for the damages. Just send me the cost and my secretary will handle.”
With that, the man slipped back into his Mercedes and sped off. Clark was boiling mad as he picked up his damaged bicycle. He was about to ‘limp’ to the Daily Planet, the card be damned, when he changed his mind.
“Bruce Wayne, is it?”
Clark pocketed the card he had just picked up, a feral gleam in his eyes. He had to test out anyway – using his superpowers while living in a city. So might as well start with this asshole then. He wouldn’t do anything drastic (his Ma would kill him). He just wanted to wreck his car just like what happened to his bicycle. An eye for an eye – isn’t that what they say?
-
“Must you be that obnoxious?”
Alfred’s voice came through the wireless earbud tucked in Bruce’s right ear.
“I was merely getting his attention.”
“A ‘hello’ and ‘may I get to know you’ will have worked equally fine. That is what people normally do, Master Bruce.”
“Then we won’t get to see what we saw, right. No human could have pulled that off, Alfred. They will have just fallen sideways and not do that. He is definitely not what he seems to be.”
“Then you are playing a very dangerous game, Master Bruce. If he is truly as you have discovered, he can crush you without effort.”
“It’s a risk I have to take,” Bruce shrugged as he weaved his way through traffic, heading back to Gotham, “Metropolis’ too close to Gotham and if he’s going to settle there, I need to be prepared.”
“You should know as well that he hasn’t done anything to warrant such mistrust. In fact, all he has done is recuse those in need.”
“What about the impaled truck?” Bruce argued, expertly manoeuvring his car through the narrow gap of two semi-trailers, “Doesn’t look very recusing to me.”
“But the woman’s story…”
“Speculative and no evidence to prove that there’s a connection. He could have done it for other reasons too.”
There was a momentarily silence before Alfred retorted in exasperation.
“Master Bruce, sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.”
“Faith!” Bruce snorted, making a turn to enter the highway leading out of Metropolis, “I’m not going to bank the safety of Gotham on such deluded bullshit. That’s akin to committing suicide.”
A burst of static signalled that Alfred had cut off their communications. Bruce snatched the earbud and threw it onto the passenger seat. Alfred was probably stalking out of the Batcave, extremely upset.
Well, who asked him to ask him to do the impossible.
Bruce do no believe in faith and he definitely do no one believe that someone with that much power would be that good. He had to keep an eye on this so-called Clark Kent. He had to know before anything goes awry.

Our Home Away From Home, Away From Home
[1] [2] [3] [4-5] [6] [7] [x-x] [10]
PART 8 – Permutation
Its almost strange to call it home, Yang thinks, staring up at the house she grew up in. She'd spent so much time in a cozy little dorm and a browning two-bedroom apartment that a house in the woods almost seems like a distant memory. (She hadn't spent Summer here either. She was in Menagerie with Blake then Mistral with her dad for a getaway, and the rest she spent kicking back with Jaune).
"A lot happened this year," she says.
Jaune's eying the woods around them, trying to see a break in the pattern outside of a few distant houses lost between the bark and autumn leaves. He swallows cause he knows that, if it weren't for Yang, he'd have been terribly lost. "Hm? Uh… huh?" he garbles, unable to hide the tinge of panic.
"A lot happened this year," she repeats. "What's up with you?"
"The woods are thick is all. How you only got lost in it once is beyond me… So, what's with the nostalgia? Old house got you thinking?"
"Something like that. Mostly, I didn't think I'd end up here, getting ready to reacquaint with Raven, and getting you of all people to meet my parents."
"Yeah, didn't think I'd end up introducing another blonde to my sisters either. Future seemed full of redheads and I stuck with it like an act of defiance."
"Defiance? Why's that?"
"If you haven't noticed, we're all terribly blonde. Even Adrian's hair is a dirty gold and we thought for sure he'd be a brunette. It's either a curse, or fate is terrible at jokes and uncomfortable at parties."
She chuckles. "Calling fate out like a loser isn't going to win you any favors. Besides, can't help it when both your folks are blondes."
"One of my sisters is adopted. A blind adoption, mind you. From Vacuo. You know what we got? Chocolate brown skin and dusty blonde hair. Boom. Curse."
There's the sound of fluttering feathers behind them. Qrow straightens his back with a snap as he shapeshifts. "Ngh, agh! Ha… What are two doing just standing outside? Expecting another invitation?"
Jaune and Yang exchange a look. "Stalling," they say in unison.
"W-what? How did you two…? Nevermind." He pinches his forehead cause the moment is too familiar and he feels an irrational envy creep up his cheeks. "You two coming in or not?"
"Why so impatient all of a sudden?" Jaune asks.
"I don't take enjoyment out of watching a train wreck but if I can't stop it, I'll at least hope it's over quickly."
Yang puts a hand on her hip. "Not very optimistic, are you?"
"I prefer cautious," he says as he waves a dismissive hand and stalks ahead of them. "Besides, I don't want you two walking in there expecting things to go off without a hitch." He glances back to see them roll their eyes at the same time and that uncomfortable shiver is back.
"Now that you're here, a disaster's all but guaranteed," Jaune quips.
Qrow glares but neither of them lose their cheek. He rolls his eyes too, but doesn't show them his smile when he's got his back turned. He isn't too sensitive about his semblance – if anything, he's glad Jaune can treat him like he isn't a wounded animal – but he notices the twitch in Jaune's eye. It's there cause he's too soft a soul to have all the bite that quips demand. He almost wants to say sorry for it. "He's a good kid,"
Qrow thinks.
With a twist of the knob, he opens the door and then kicks up his heel to slam it open the rest of the way. He wanders in with a swagger and a mischievous grin. Both fit him naturally.
"Rae!" he shouts. "Your brat and her boyfriend are at the door!"
Jaune balks and shoots Yang a look. She gives him a quick, "He's just like that when he talks to her," and ushers him in.
"And you didn't let them in like a normal fucking person!?" Raven shouts back and it's like a nostalgic gust has poured over Yang. Raven's every inflection is recognizable, echoing deeply from buried memories. They argued like this often when she was small.
"They can walk through a door just fine," Qrow says, swinging into the archway that leads into a tall kitchen. "And lest you forget, I'm a guest here, too. Not your chaperone."
Jaune lets Yang wander ahead, eying her backside as she inches a trail behind Qrow.
Yang peeks in to see her mother chopping something on the kitchen table by the sink. Bravado has taken a backseat and the very reality of the situation has settled in like a bat to Yang's blindside.
"Do you really have to be difficult with me right now?" Raven says with a huff but there's no bite to it, just lazy exasperation.
"Yeah, I do…" Qrow replies. "This is our normal. The minute I go easy on you, assume I'm dead and you've encountered a terribly tolerable doppelganger."
Raven's cheek quirks and it triggers in Yang things she half remembers, and half convinces herself she'd seen in a dream.
"Hmph. Bold of you to assume I won't just take the trade as an act of divine mercy. Maybe this doppelganger can cook for the house every once in a while instead of free loading off my dinner."
"If you wanted me to cook venison, you could have asked."
"Not the deer again… Tai hates it when you bring the kill into the kitchen. I personally don't care that you track blood on the carpet, but he refuses to agree with my sentiments about a house that's lived in and not one you find sterilized in catalogs. Ugh, I'm getting tired just thinking of that argument."
"I know," Qrow agrees, leaning on the counter. "That's why I do it on purpose."
Raven tilts her head back to give her brother a smirk. "You're a scoundrel, Qrow," she says just before her eyes catch Yang's.
"Hey, Mom," Yang says out of instinct. It's too late to take it back.
"Yang, you–" she crosses her arms, "–who is this?"
Jaune's heat presses against her arm like the partner he is. Not in front like her protector, but beside her like her equal. She can feel the way he's hiding his nerves with the shudder in his arm. "Dad didn't tell you?" she says. "This is Jaune. My boyfriend."
Jaune, borrowing confidence he's learned from her, doesn't back down. "Good afternoon, ma'am," he greets, standing proudly. His fingers twitch against Yang's arm.
"Oh, he told me about him alright. I just wasn't expecting a familiar face." Her eyes lock onto him. She smirks when she sees he doesn't flinch. "You're an Arc, I take it? I recognize that face. Your father was in the news once or twice."
"Oh, you heard about the manticore horde? Or was it the behemoth at Glenn?"
"Neither. He blew up a dust shop."
Oddly enough, Yang feels him relax.
"Yeah," he says, scratching his head, "Arcs really shouldn't have guns."
Raven nods. There's no tension here, and Yang feels it's gone all too smoothly.
"Perhaps you can tell me the story," Raven offers as she turns back to chopping. "I have an old bet with Qrow I'd like to settle."
"What did you bet on?" Jaune asks.
Raven snorts. "And let you lie to give my brother the win? Please. I know you two are friendly." She glances back. It's the only other time through this whole conversation that she's looked Yang in the eye and it's still only for a second. She goes back to chopping. "Why don't you two go into the living room and wait for Tai while my silent shadow of a brother here helps me sort out this recipe."
Qrow shrugs and continues to say nothing other than whisper something to Raven that makes her blush angrily.
Yang peels off of Jaune and her insides broil unsteadily.
"Sounds like she's changed," Jaune says when he's in the living room alone with her on a wide U-shaped sofa.
She shakes her head. "She hasn't though."
"What? But the way you described her before–"
"–is all hearsay. I had a mom who left out of the blue. Before that she was jabbing back and forth with Qrow, needing help in the kitchen, and trying her best to be on top of things. Everything I said about her between that time was just me making assumptions about a woman who wasn't around for me to judge in person. I never actually knew if she changed any since leaving."
"So this is Raven Branwen: Unfiltered? If this is what she was like before, then maybe she's just trying to fit back into place the only way she knows how."'
She raises her knees to curl up but she forces them back down. She doesn't want to appear too obviously vulnerable. Not when her mother is still in the house. She tosses Jaune a meaningful glance. "Is it wrong for me to hate that?"
"Some people might say it is, but I think it's too much to ask someone who has had to raise her little sister all on her own to let her absentee mother just waltz back into her life like nothing's changed."
"I still don't know if you're agreeing with me or not."
"Cause I don't know either. Give me a minute to think on it and I'll probably pick a side but I'd much rather stay right where I am. On neutral ground." He squeezes her hand. "I'm here to be your backup, not your coach." Because they don't solve each other's issues, not every time, but they always help each other along.
She knows this, of course. She hasn't deluded herself into thinking that they could crack every case just because love had lofty ideas about making everything right. Being in love doesn't solve everything, it just gives you a partner to solve them with.
"I think I'm suddenly very tired," she says, leaning on his arm. "Wake me in an hour when dinner's ready."
"Uh… shouldn't it be done sooner?"
"Raven used to wake up at five AM to make breakfast in time for school. She takes breaks cause she doesn't always have the patience for it. Don't expect it to go any faster with Uncle Qrow in there. He's just there to make sure she doesn't skip any steps."
"That doesn't fill my with confidence," he says but she's already snuggling into his arm with a contented sigh.
With the sound of clattered pans and restrained yelling from the kitchen, Jaune decides to shut his eyes too.

Jaune is violently awoken by someone grabbing him by the collar and shaking him awake.
"You!" says the messy tuft of blonde hair presently pressed against his face. "You're… yer…. Hic!" The scent of alcohol is palpable. The smell is dizzying.
He blinks himself awake. "Uh, you're Mr. Xiao Long, I'm guessing? I'm Jaune. Yang said she mentioned me?"
The tuft of hair pulls up revealing the chiseled scruff of a well-worn huntsman. Faded scars litter his neck and chin, but that's where all the menace in him ends. Despite his tone, Taiyang has the look of a desperate man. His eyes are wide and a solid, beautiful blue. His cheeks have a slight plump to them that make him just shy of an Adonis.
Jaune makes the executive decision not to think along that line any further. But it's clear that Yang's got stellar genes and – No! Bad Jaune! Stop it!
Tai glances at the slumbering Yang, snoring softly against Jaune's arm. "What did you do to my daughter?" he says with a drunken pout that would look more intimidating on a pug.
"Uh, nothing!" he whispers urgently. "Nothing I swear."
He squints so much that he closes his eyes and nearly passes out before he jolts himself awake. "You… You and Qrow really are friends. 'Nothing,' he says… that's just code for plowed her till sunrise."
Still in a sleepy haze, Yang pushes her father's face away until he falls back onto the coffee table behind him. "Dad… leave him alone," she groans. "He wouldn't touch me even if I tore off his clothes and –" Her eyes shoot open, fully awake and painfully aware. Her scream then is almost silent, Jaune thinks, but he's pretty certain that's cause Yang's vivid horror is blasted like shellshock when she abruptly screams louder next to his ear and scrambles over the sofa to hide behind it.
He's still shaking his head to get the ringing out.
Qrow bursts in, Raven meekly peeking behind him. "What the fuck – Oh."
Tai is sprawled over the coffee table, squinting angrily at everything.
"Bird!" Tai accuses, swinging his arm out to point at him but slamming it on the hardwood coffee table. "Ow," he mutters as his aura flares.
"Drunk," Qrow greets. He hoists the man over his shoulder. "Sorry about this, kids. I think Tai's got his nerves bundled up again. I'll get him to detox upstairs after a nap."
"Uh, it looks like he'll be out for the week," Jaune says, shaking his head still. "I doubt a nap will fix him by dinner."
"Nah. Tai can burn all the alcohol out of his system with enough motivation and calories. He'll be ready by the time Rae manages to get something on the table."
Tai wiggles like an insolent child, fists lightly beating on the man's back. "Back off, Qrow!" he slurs. "You're not taking this one – hic – too… guh…"
"That's my twin sister, you dunce."
"Really?" Tai pushes his head up, eying Raven. "Pfft! Qrow, you are not that pretty."
Once the two of them have rounded the corner into Tai's bedroom, Jaune asks the quietly smiling Raven, "This happen often?"
"Not as much as it used to," she says. "Was a time when there were two whole families in this house and it was never quiet. Two men and enough testosterone to make a third made competition between them frequent. Qrow got Tai to drink and you can see that he hasn't acclimated to it as well as my brother does."
"Do you drink?"
"I'm a Branwen," she shrugs, "our blood is two parts alcohol. Small mercy that Yang hasn't picked up our habits. Or Ruby for that matter."
Jaune raises a brow. "Ruby's a Branwen?"
Yang nearly gasps from behind the couch, hands clutching her mouth.
"No," Raven says. "Well, she should have been but Qrow basically raised her all the same. He even knit her a tiny red hood when she was barely a foot tall, and it's been her motif ever since." Raven, eying him, closes her arms a little tighter around herself. As if guarded. Uncertain. "Despite how it may appear," she says, "I am glad my daughter found you but there's something you should know moving forward…"
Jaune prepares for the inevitability of the 'boyfriend' talk. It doesn't come. Raven is beside herself, eying the floor. "No matter what happens today, I do not intend to reconcile with my daughter."
He realizes that she doesn't know that Yang is in the room, just by the sofa. His heart knots. "You don't know if she wants that yet."
She laughs. It's bitter. "It doesn't matter. What Yang wants isn't coming into the equation. She needs to distance herself from me."
"What was the point of coming here if not to bridge the gap between you two?"
Raven chews her lip, wanting nothing more than to end the conversation and walk out of the room. She doesn't. Can't. "To prove that things have changed here. That me and my brother talk, and that Tai has… met me halfway."
"So this – all of this – is for show?"
Her features darken, her face hardens. "Yes."
He pushes himself up, almost prepares to march up to her. His feet don't push him any further. His willful restraint is there but it's paper thin. "And if she wants more?" he asks, inwardly begging her to give him a reason to meet her up close.
Her eyes narrow at the floor. "All you have to do is make her an Arc and she'll live a life better than anything I can give her!" Her gaze is at him, dangerous and unafraid, but its desperate. She's asking him a favor. "Asking me to be a part of her life is like active theft. You will give her all she'll ever want, but me? I'll only ever take things away. And if you give me the chance, I'll end up taking her too. She'll leave you like I did Tai."
The silence wanes and Jaune can hear the thumping in his own chest. She's making claims for things that haven't happened yet. As if she can't promise to give as well as she takes. As if she can't meet her own daughter halfway. As if she can't compromise. His ears strain to hear anything from Yang, but she's so deftly quiet that he feels alone in the room with her mother.
Muscle fastens onto bone, curling his fist inward till digs into his palm. His aura flares. The sound of it jolts him awake. He'd been holding his breath.
Then… he plops down onto his seat. Tension in his skin unwinds. All his disbelief slips away. Any anger he feels pools into his back to weigh him against the cushions. "But why?" is all he asks, looking up at her.
Raven is so taken aback by his sudden shift that she shows the tangled fear she'd tucked away for a moment. The question is genuine and – like her many nights moonlighting bars – she is tempted to bare her soul to a stranger. "Because I'm a Branwen," she says, eyes deadened. Scowling as if the name is a profane. "And even a terrible mother wouldn't wish that name on her daughter."
When she leaves the room, Yang rises from behind the couch. She doesn't focus on anything. She looks bewildered, pained.
Qrow comes down the steps and they look at him. He looks like how she feels. "I'm sorry if this wasn't what you were expecting," he says.
Yang clutches the backrest of the sofa. "I don't know what I was expecting."
Qrow gives her a worried look. "Maybe… maybe it's better that way."
He wanders into the kitchen, leaving them alone.
Jaune doesn't hold Yang. Instead, he fishes her gauntlets from the duffel bag, takes her by the hand, and pulls her outside.
-0-
She sets fire to a dead tree. The blast of Ember Celica ripples through the woods, scatters wildlife, shakes the canopy, and rustles the owls awake. She doesn't care. The blowback from her gauntlets as it makes contact with the deadwood is cathartic. Reflective of what she's feeling inside.
But it isn't anger.
"What does she even… Ugh!" Another blast, sending out a spent shell, light casting over her cheek and hair with accompanying heat. "I don't get it!"
She breathes in and out. Blinks moisture into her eyes. She's been doing the very opposite of crying and drying the liquid in her sockets. She's starting to feel dizzy. She slumps back onto a rock Jaune is sitting on, using his shoulder as a backrest. "I'm not… mad at her. I'm confused. And I'm mad that I'm confused. Does that make sense?"
"About as much sense as she was making," he says with a sarcastic smile.
She's trying to smile back. Even a little one might do but her lips down-curl. Her frown tightens and she sighs into the open sky. "I wanted to give her a chance," she says. "Maybe see where this goes but… now that I know she won't even try? How am I supposed to process this? Do I just do what she wants and not try either?"
He plucks a twig from a dead branch, snapping its length into little pieces. "Do you even want to do that? I mean, if leaving things as they are isn't what you want, then ideally how would you like all this to end?"
She takes half of the twig – snapping it between them. She picks it apart too.
An answer doesn't come.
They gather the tiny bits of branch and bunch it into Jaune's hands. Yang pulls out a fire dust shell from her gauntlet and cracks it open over them. Red particles filter over and into the loose wood bits. He spools them into a ball and his semblance surges over his arm.
His muscles tighten when he approaches the dead tree. It's barely as tall as he is now. His arm pulls back. The chunks in his palm ignite. He throws them like a man-propelled buckshot, scattering burning holes through it.
Even charred, the thing has dangerous embers dancing off its broken pieces.
"We should put this out," she says.
"Mm!" He kicks it down, unrooting it. Then he hoists it up. "Got another good punch in ya'?"
"I've got a few, yeah, but I'll save the rest for later. I only need one for this."
He crouches low, prepping to toss. "Ready?" he asks.
"Pull!" she shouts.
He tosses it into the air, scattering the scent of ash and char, and she swings her fist into it. The sheer force of the blow consumes the flame as it rockets and splinters into a tall rock.
"Y'know what?" she says. "If it's taking me this long to even answer, maybe this isn't what I want."
"So what now, chief?"
She snorts. "Don't give me ideas. Anyway, I say we take the aggressive approach. We got them a present, I say we break it out instead of handing them the box. Invite them to try it with us."
Jaune turns to the house where they left the duffel bag. He winces. "Are you sure about this?"
"I don't see an elegant solution. And it's probably stupid, yeah, but stupid has worked for us so far."
"Really? How exactly has it worked for us so far?"
"In what universe do hickeys stop two primed teenagers from having sex?"
"Ours, apparently…"
"Gets the tension out. Would be genius if I didn't find it by accident."
"Speaking of which…"
He comes up behind her and pushes her hair off her shoulder, exposing her neck.
"What are you – Ah!" she gasps when he bites her neck. Her aura lowers on instinct, letting him mark her.
He pulls away and wipes her dry with a handkerchief. "You taste like saltwater and ash."
She rubs her neck as the pain subsides rapidly. "We should bathe when we get back. What was that for anyway?"
"Revenge, mostly. Feeling petty."
"On me?"
"Your mom."
"Heh, yeah, she's gonna ask questions or implode trying not to. Actually, since we're getting shiners, we should get ones to match."
He doesn't protest but he's not happy about it. With a sigh he leans down but she's already jumped up to latch onto him.
She bites down so hard that he swears that she was actually trying to eat him. He'd be more okay with it if she didn't keep trying to one-up herself.

Dinner, somehow, is always pleasant. True to Qrow's word, Tai comes in completely sober. Jaune chalks it up to having a very useful semblance.
Tai is a chill dad. He nudges Yang when he sees the hickey, even when Qrow refuses to make eye contact with Jaune and Raven squints while warring with herself to say something but won't. Tai reintroduces himself and sits next to Jaune to strike up a conversation with him.
It takes minutes for Tai to fish out that Jaune has seven sisters, that he met Yang by throwing up on her boots, and that he used to have a crush on Ruby. The last bit comes as a surprise to everyone but Tai who pats himself on the back for having incredible girls in the family.
Jaune finds out that Tai is very much like Yang. Despite closing himself off for a good chunk of her childhood, he's clearly had a great influence on her disposition. Father and daughter joke and jab at each other, laugh just as loudly, crack the same kind of jokes (he tries not to think of them as mom jokes when he looks at his girilfriend).
Jaune eventually gets to tell the story of how his dad blew up a dust shop during his third year in Beacon. Just a mishap with a loose dust feeder, a weapon he didn't know how to use, and a particularly handsy bully. By the end, Raven cheers when she wins the bet. Apolian Arc punched a cop. Qrow bet that he punched a civilian.
They're unwinding in the living room when Jaune's eying the wall of photos. Summer's only in a handful of the group shots. Qrow explains that she insisted on being the photographer and didn't like being in photos herself. It's why she has the hood. It's comforting when she can pretend to be hiding.
She sounds like Ruby.
"I just noticed," Jaune says to Yang, "your mom's smiling in every photo. Qrow's the only one who occasionally doesn't."
"It was a different time," she says. "Qrow told me that she was cheery and crass. Would even crack a joke or two whenever she found the time to stop training and be a teenager."
"I'll be honest, it's still weird seeing her smile so much. I came in here expecting a variation of Glynda Goodwitch, not Qrow Branwen. Speaking of which," he glances back at the adults huddled laughing by the sofa, "we should probably break out the gift."
"Speaking of speaking of things," she rubs the hickey on her neck, "it still stings."
"Oh, sorry. Let me heal it."
She pushes his hands away. "No, I –" Her eyes widen. Pressing two digits into the bruised flesh, she feels the ache but doesn't hate it. "Okay, heal me quick before this turns into a fetish!"
Warmth pools out of his palms.
"Could you not make out in full view of her family?" Qrow calls from across the room, and they realize they're leaned a little too close.
"We weren't gonna!" Jaune calls out.
Yang rolls her eyes cause she's comfortable with them coming to their own conclusions about her relationship but Jaune's stint with Tai made him want to make a good impression. It was already easy enough what with Tai admitting that as long as Yang chose and continues to choose him, then he'll rest easy knowing she's in good hands, but Jaune wants to pile on the goodwill.
Those thoughts take a backseat when Yang reaches for the duffel bag by the coffee table. Goodwill be damned.
It's time.
Yang parts a few clothes and a hollowed-out cushion for their scrolls to fish out a crystalline bottle. "We wanted to hand this off in the box but we figured we might as well crack it open tonight."
With the way they're all staring at the bottle, it's clear they recognize it.
Qrow roars with laughter. "Ha! Diadem, the dirtiest fucking drink on the planet!" He comes up to it and holds the bottle aloft, fingers running over the bumpy, crystalline surface. "Ah, look at it. All prettied up for the upper class. Diadem used to be homemade and brewed in a shack. Used to be so strong that you could feel nothing for hours."
"'Course, the stuff's a little better refined nowadays. You used to taste fire dust in it too cause their shoddy furnaces were held together by spit and prayers. But look at it! Pricks like Jacques fucking Schnee or that Lucius ass-end-of-an-ass Merrigold would down this like it's water, having no idea that they're chugging the equivalent of desert moonshine."
Tai licks his lips and it almost feels like a bad idea before he shoots up from his seat. "I'll get the shot glasses!" he announces.
Raven is the only one not smiling. She's suspicious, but the minute the drink touches her lips and she's made wide awake, she melts into the same stupor as everyone else.
-0-
Yang barely registers what their plan was supposed to be. Loosening Raven's lips with the stiffest drink since frozen stalactites seemed a half-baked plan at best, but they didn't plan passed that. They might have been able to salvage it if they didn't take many drinks themselves.
Jaune took exactly one and he's already left her alone to start an intimate relationship with the toilet.
He did, however, get the ball rolling about last names for some reason. He might have explained why to her but she can't remember.
"They'll lose sleep over a friend who's had a bad day," Raven says with a snarl that isn't sincere so much as it appears to be her permanent tipsy-face. "Worrying up and down but will leave you alone after a smile cause that's all they need to calm their nerves. Their hearts are too kind…"
"Who…?" Yang slurs, struggles to think of the rest of the sentence, then starts over. "Who… who are you talking about?"
Raven scrunches her nose. "The Roses," she answers.
Yang buries her head in her hands and curls into her seat. "No… I don't wanna hear about Uncle Qrow's god-damn garden again…"
Qrow, sporting alcohol like one does water, kicks back beside her. There's something in his eye though. The alcohol is getting to him. "We're talking about the Rose half of the family. Y'know, Summer and Ruby?"
"Hm?" She squints. "Oh yeah… Ruby's a worrywart."
"Qrow!" Tai calls from beside Raven, looping an arm around her. "What's a Xiao Long like then?"
"They're all fucking crazy," he jabs. Yang and Tai simultaneously pretend to be hurt. "But! I've found that the more obnoxious they seem on the outside, the more worth you'll find underneath."
Raven leans into Tai and stares at Yang's feet curled up on the cushion. It's the closest she'll get to meeting her eyes. "They can be in your face," Raven says, "deftly abrasive, louder than foghorns, and wilder than ursa! But they're steadfast partners…" She looks up at Tai who has a half-lidded gawk to him that's like he's falling in love with her again. "Painfully loyal… and… dangerously persistent."
Yang feels a heat roll over her side. She leans into it until she realizes that Jaune's slid beside her and pulling her in by the waist. "She's right, y'know?" Jaune tells her quietly. "You never did listen when I asked you not to pursue me and, yet, here we are. You never did know when to quit but I'm glad you never quit on me."
She wants to return the sentiment somehow but words don't form and she's making faces that she worries he'll misunderstand. She's just mad at herself for not finding words. "F-fuck… That was a human sentence you just made. Why aren't you drinking?" she says instead, pushing an empty shot glass to his lips.
"No thanks. Diadem will literally kill me. I felt like I was throwing up my own organs. I swear I felt my lungs pull up into my throat. I am not touching that decanter ever again." He turns to Qrow who is squinting at them as if they're all out of focus. "Oh, shit, sorry, Qrow," Jaune says. Cause the man is sat alone in front of two couples.
Jaune tries not to wince when Qrow downs a shot and his eyes go glassy.
He is sat slumped at the last corner of the large U-shaped sofa. His scroll, set neatly below him on the coffee table, flashes over his gawk face as he leans into it. His hands are beside him, palms pointing upwards while his fingers twitch like roots animating in intervals. His slack jaw regards them with his deep gaunt, eyes meeting every face before he points his head to the ceiling as he falls back into the seat. Seems he's not quite as adept with so many drinks in him. Or maybe Diadem is a weakness.
He lets each eye blink individually before he announces, "I'm dating again!"
Everyone sits up. Okay, only kind of. They lean out but can't peel off the sofa. Except for Jaune who is sober. "Since when do you have time to date?" he asks.
"I don't," he chuckles, shaking his head as he comes back to his senses. "I flirt while on the job. Closest thing either of us will get to a date at this point."
Yang mumbles something.
Jaune strains his ears to hear her. Maybe the ringing from earlier hasn't stopped. "What was that? I'm sitting right next to you and even I couldn't hear you."
She pulls up before falling sideways onto Jaune's shoulder. "Who!?" she calls out to the room cause she doesn't know where Qrow is. Her eyes are still closed.
Qrow grins. "Winter… Schnee."
At first, when he starts talking about a mission they had together in Mistral, they think he's going to segway into a conquest. But he doesn't. He starts talking about how he and Winter shared in the fact that they both had a responsibility they shirked for duty. To protect the world their loved ones live in, they've chosen to abandon having lives of their own.
No one calls him out for clearly being drunk out of his mind nor for opening up.
He's got an anthology of moments with Winter. And each time he finishes a story, they're surprised whenever it doesn't end in heat. One time they do end it in a kiss, but it was on the cheek. She'd done it comfort him but they both knew it was hollow. It was an appreciated gesture, but it wasn't something that could help. They aren't wired to let something like that heal any kind of wound.
Winter doesn't know what it's like to have a delicate heart anymore and the idea of quiet comforts like a hug or a kiss feels so… unsubstantial to them both. They either needed more or that wasn't the kind of comfort they needed. Realizing this is why they started dating.
The stories are nicer then. They leave a movie theater ten minutes in when they realize that sitting around to watch actors pretend to be heroes isn't for them. They instead find a quiet corner in a bar but they don't drink. They talk and he jokes and she's smiling and they kiss and…
Raven is curled up into Tai now, staring at her brother with a look that can only be pride.
Jaune is smiling sleepily at him. Yang nestles into his chest as they scoop together on the sofa's corner.
Qrow gets up, scroll in hand, and leaves the room to call Winter.
Tai and Jaune fall asleep.
Yang catches Raven staring but is so out of it that she isn't sure if Raven caught her staring instead. The quiet makes the crickets fill the spaces beside something crackling outside.
"What are Branwens like?" Yang asks.
Raven squints, pulling herself out of her dreariness. "…What?"
"If a Rose cares too much but loves unconditionally, and a Xiao Long is a dependable but gets in your face, then what is a Branwen?"
She huddles into Tai, looking vulnerable. "We…" Her eyes narrow at the floor and she hisses quietly to herself. "I…"
A pang of empathy makes her sit up. "Mom…" she says consciously.
Raven stares at her. Yang can't tell if she's touched or just shocked, but when her eyes draw away and she clutches at Tai's shirt, words pour shaking out of her lips. "Branwens… are a curse." Something awful crawls into her cheeks, her features squeezing together so her few wrinkles cast shadows. There's a pain there that almost looks familiar, as if she'd had this look about her forever but only now is Yang seeing it for what it is. And whatever that pain is, it's old. Maybe even older than she is.
Raven whispers something to Tai before getting up. Halfway up the steps, she looks at Yang and Jaune before saying, "You should take him to bed. I don't care what you do with him but I'm sure he'll appreciate a warm mattress over a sofa."
"That's very considerate of you," Yang says as she eases Jaune's arm over her shoulder. "Thanks."
Raven blushes, deeper than the alcohol might, as she marches back up the steps. "Don't get used to it," she says, not meaning it.
Jaune sleepily wakes up with a good shake. "Ugh, babe, could ya' not?"
"Pfft! Since when do you call me babe?"
"In my head, mostly. Giving you a pet name will actively worsen my experience. You've got enough ammunition to tease me with."
"I'll fish them out of you yet. Pick up your feet a little. I'm taking you to bed."
"Please, no," he says, pretending to resist. "I'm still tender…"
She rolls her eyes. Even in a drowsy state, he still finds time mess around. "Don't cooperate and I'll sling you over my shoulder."
He scoffs playfully. "As if a free ride is gonna stop me."
Her eyes narrow. "I'm really going to do it."
"Whoa, whoa! Hey, I'll do it…" He yawns. "See?" His shin hits the coffee table and he stumbles.
Yang grabs him and leads him by the arm.
Tai stirs when they pass him by. "Honey?"
"Go to bed, Dad."
"Good night, Mr. Xiao Long."
"Please," Tai grins, "call me Tai."
Jaune squints. "Yeah, I'm not doing that."
"You're not –" Yang starts. "Oh, hey, look at us. Still in sync!"
"I think there just isn't a universe where I call your dad Tai." His nose scrunches up. "Yup, even sounds weird saying it out loud."
-0-
Yang's room is as she remembers it. Only, for once, it's completely tidy. She always had a habit of leaving a little mess somewhere. Sometimes it was hidden, like in a drawer or a corner under her desk, but not this time. Her dad (or maybe Qrow) keeps it cleaner than she ever would have.
Even her strung-up photos along the ceiling are still there. Dates and names and faces she thought would be her whole world. Only now she has a new circle of friends.
"This feels like a room for a different person," she says to Jaune after she's laid him in her bed. Her comforter is freshly pressed and still warm. "Like I'm looking at old me through a lens."
Jaune's eyes are still closed but he reaches for her hand over the sheets and says, "Or maybe this is the version of you your dad remembers. How different are you now from back then?"
"Not a lot, I think. I mean, we're only over a year apart," she spies a photo of her and Ruby glistening in the moonlight. It's of her last day in Signal. It was Ruby's last day too, apparently. "Or maybe I just haven't noticed." She shoots him a look and he can feel her stare enough to crack an eye open. "Comparing me now to when we met. Was I different?"
He shuts his eyes again, but he finds her hand and tugs once. Yang willfully falls onto the mattress next to him. "Hm… well you used to have anger issues in the ring. Even Ms. Goodwitch is starting to notice how you've mellowed out."
"Heh, I guess I have you to thank for that."
He places a hand over her face. He's still not opening his eyes but his nose scrunches up again. "No you don't."
She moves his hand off her face. "Eh?"
"That's all you, Yang. You made that change. If I helped at all, our friends did just as much."
Her lip tilts. "I was trying to flirt."
"I know but… we can't about this. Part of me still worries we'll do that stupid couple thing and forget we have friends."
"Hey, we've been good so far, I think… Look, we can talk to them and figure things out."
"Yeah, compromises."
"Yeah!" She curls into his arm. "But not tonight, please… I've enough things to worry about right here."
"Right… Okay, big picture later." He kisses her forehead. "Now sleep. We've had a day…"
"Yeah, a day…"
She gets comfortable under the sheets and on his shoulder for exactly a minute before she remembers something. "Fuck…" she whispers as she pulls out.
"What is it?"
"Forgot the duffel. I'll go get it and be back in a minute."
"Leave it, Yang. Come back to bed."
"Not taking any chances without our scrolls. Ruby might call us." She's already at the door. "Just a minute, I swear."
She finds her dad slumped against the railing that overlooks the living room. Steam billows hazily off his skin and through his jacket, his semblance burning away the alcohol. The area smells thinly like Diadem but mostly of water vapor. Yang's nose twitches at the familiar scent.
He's blinking a lot, head shaking.
"Dad?"
He turns in a start. Breaths pass through him in labored chunks, chest heaving. His eyes are puffy. Fingers twitch and his eyes steal glances at her as he turns away. There's a want – need – to reach out but she can tell that he doesn't think he's worthy of it.
So, she crashes into his back and hugs him.
A palm runs down his face. "I'm so… so sorry, honey," he says.
He tucks his arms into his chest so she can hold all of him. His hands clutch over her encircled wrists. "Dad… Dad it's okay. You were in a rough spot…"
"That doesn't matter… I'm still your father. You needed a parent and you ended up having to be one for Ruby. I… I hate myself everyday thinking about how you didn't have anyone… I… I should have… I'm so sorry…"
She knows telling him that he didn't do anything wrong or that he didn't have any control over himself would only be excuses upon excuses, perhaps only a handful compared to the thousands he'd piled for himself over the years. He knew he did wrong, and none of her strength coming out the other end of it is going to change that.
So, instead, she shifts to his front and pulls up his head. She wraps her arms around his neck. "I don't care about any of that anymore… I already forgive you. I did a long, long time ago."
She feels his tears running down her neck. Then she realizes that some of them are hers.

Jaune winces. He's been up for over an hour now. Yang slipped into bed with him but she'd been shaking and sniffling. He could tell that she'd been crying but the tears had dried and she'd been fighting off all that was left of whatever it was in his arms. Now she's sleeping soundly while he's been trying to piece together what happened on his own whilst constructing a speech in case it's Raven's fault.
Finally, he settles with getting up and loosening his nerves before really doing anything. Yang groans from the missing warmth as he stumbles out, scroll in hand.
"No new messages…" he mutters. "I hope you're alright, Rubes."
Pushing the door open, he notices an orange glow coming from downstairs. Over the railing, there's nothing below but darkness and moonlight through the windows. Even then, dark shadows waft passed the moon, clawing darkness across the floor.
"Strong, windy clouds tonight… It didn't look like it was gonna rain earlier."
The smell of ash filters into the air. "Ick… Wait."
He's awake now as he stumbles down the steps. The shadows in the window are moving too rapidly for any passing cloud. That's smog, and it clears passed the window for a moment long enough to show the orange glow outside.
The forest is on fire.
"Shit!" he howls as he runs back up the steps. Thinking quickly, he sets his scroll to Seven Rapids and blasts the heavy chorus riff at max. Leaving it in the hall, he can already hear everyone else waking up, groans and thuds all.
He busts through Yang's door. She's rubbing her eyes awake. "Jaune, what –"
"Forest fire," he says quickly, pulling out their weapons from the duffel bag.
She shakes awake. "What?"
Ember Celica crashes into her hands when he tosses them at her.
"The forest is on fire!" he says, not even waiting for her as he busts through the door again and leaps over the railing.
He tucks and rolls along the carpet, nearly colliding with a lamp as he slams through the front door into the suffocating smoke.
Heat rolls through the air like he's sitting in a boiling pot. Even his aura flares at the licking flames that whip in the wind, coiling off the trees like infernal tendrils.
Jaune thinks back to the embers they tried to douse. "Did we do this?" He shakes his head. The thought is useless right now.
The fire burns over a host of trees like charred pillars to the darkened sky, but they're all centered ahead. Most the forest is untouched still. They can contain it if they hurry. They can't stop the fire, but they can stop it from growing.
So he speeds towards the outer rim of the roaring flame where the trees are unburnt and pours his semblance into his arms. One enhanced swing fells a tree, then another, and another, but he knows he can't keep it up. He can't cut these down so easily once he's out of juice.
Qrow blows passed him, slicing a tree himself, clad in only his pants and the greatsword in his hands. "I'm guessing you and Yang have the same plan?"
"Cut off its fuel?"
Tai runs by them as sand pours out of his skin in layers. He's using his semblance and earth dust in his palms to cover the dried leaves on the ground. "Fell those quick!" he shouts. "We don't have much time!"
On the other end of the fire, Yang and Raven are busting a row of trees. Yang's fists tighten with every strike, but even if she can split a tree in a single blow, her aura suffers from the blowback. It isn't any better with Raven whose forearms flare with every swing against the sturdy oaks.
"This isn't working!" Raven shouts.
Tai sprints passed them with the familiar glow of Jaune's semblance running over him like a white shell. A layer of sand up to their ankles forms underneath them, burying dry leaves and loose branches. They could really use Jaune's semblance too. Their arms are aching.
"There are people in these woods," Yang says. "We can't let this get any bigger. Vale's never gonna send any help here fast enough without someone getting hurt."
The fire spits pillars of ash and smoke their way by a rogue wind. They turn to shield their eyes. Yang blinks through the haze and sees something in the distant dark of the woods behind them. Glowing red eyes bob rapidly between the trees, charging towards them.
Yang growls. "Ugh, we do not have time for this!" The cylinders in her gauntlets click together as she loads in fresh shells. "Raven, you're clearing the wood better than I can. Keep at it while I cover you."
Raven's hand fall quickly on her shoulder. "No," she says sternly, "this is all pointless. We're destroying our bodies for a cause we've not the strength for."
"I don't care!" Yang hisses. "I'm still doing this. Whether or not you're behind me helping at all won't change that." And with that, she bolts into the dark and the twisting red eyes in the woods collide with her.
Flashes of her gauntlet colliding with grimm flesh light up the yawning dark. Blackened fur rimmed with pale external bone all scorch and smolder with her every blow, a comet to meet the streaks of vicious red eyes.
Raven backs away from the sight, seeing Summer Rose instead.
Jaune comes up behind her and Raven feels a rush of power coursing through her veins. Her pain vanishes. Her strength feels like it's multiplying. Trees fall with ease then, matching rhythm with her daughter as Jaune runs to her side to fell grimm together.
Raven sees Tai in Jaune's place too.
Minutes pass as the fire is choked on all sides but one. Raven sees Qrow and Tai on the other end, making progress. They're exhausted, heaving through labored lungs, and she can feel her own trying to crawl out of her throat.
She dares to glance back at Jaune and Yang. Something looms overhead of them: a single red eye in the canopy. There's no time to parse what it is. Raven's already sprinting over to them.
She cuts a portal mid-sprint and she leaps into it. Her momentum carries through and into the air as she rockets up from the other end of the portal that manifests at Yang's side. Omen surges with dust as she empties the canister in her sheath and swings into the red eye above.
Fire dust surges in a swath against a mass of stone and charred bark. It's a geist amalgamated into solid wall of wood and stone.
Raven swings again, ice dust crashing into it and pushing it up. Again and again and again. Wind, earth, lightning, gravity. The last one splashes a purple glow over the grimm as it slowly floats, all of its form ensconced in a gravity well that tugs it into the sky.
She swings but she's out of dust… And she's falling. Her skin rustles like pinpricks as she starts to shapeshift into a bird, but she stops when Yang zooms passed her. Jaune's semblance is folded over her, making her glow like an ascending meteor as she crashes dead center into the red eye.
With a thunderous crackle, she breaks through and the night sky gleams passed her. She whoops while she's up there against the moon.
Raven falls into Jaune's arms below. His semblance is already working its way to ease the ache but she pushes off of him. "Thank you," she manages behind a heave of her chest, "ha… but the boys aren't done yet. Help them with the fire. They'll need it more."
Jaune nods without hesitating and sprints off towards the remains of the flame.
Yang falls into a controlled descent as Ember Celica slows her momentum with a few blasts. Her arms aren't blasting evenly. They probably still hurt. She lands into a stumble and lets herself fall into a sitting up position. She's breathing a lot.
Raven sits beside her. Somewhere in the distance, the boys are cheering.
"We did it," Yang says.
"You sound surprised," Raven says.
"Cause just like you, I didn't think we could do it either."
Raven lifts a brow. "So why did you keep pushing?"
"To prove to us both that we were wrong."
And Raven laughs, hardy and true till she's tearing up in one eye for a moment. "You really are Summer's daughter," she says. Her smile is infectious.
Yang hides her smile in her knees, huddling them close to her chest. "I'm yours, too."
Raven's mouth thins sadly. "But you shouldn't be."
"I don't think you have a choice."
There's a blue shimmer through the treeline now. The boys are trying to finish this quicker by using ice dust to enclose the largest parts of the fire in pillars of ice. The pale light resembles frosted glass.
"We're pragmatists," Raven says.
"What?"
Raven tilts her head at her. "You asked what the Branwens are. That's it. Pragmatists." Not a curse this time. This is her honest answer.
Yang huddles closer as Raven's gaze turns faraway. She knows what's coming because Raven, in her disheveled shorts and worn shirt, her ragged hair and muddied skin, is vulnerable. Her artifice, the one of strength that championed her tribe, is gone.
"We like to pretend we have room for love," Raven continues. "That's never the case. Never true. My mother and father died at a burning beach while Qrow and I fled with the tribe. Nevermind that our eldest sister died with them, more brilliant than either of us will ever be. It didn't matter that she deserved a life brighter than either us could ever make it. A Branwen is hardwired to protect something bigger than they are. To us, that was always the tribe. The whole of it. Not its members, not its kin, nor the ones we dared to love. Just the tribe. The larger whole."
She sighs slowly, letting her breath catch in the now cold air. "Then Beacon came and Ozpin changed all that. Suddenly the tribe wasn't our greatest responsibility. Ozpin had drilled in us the want to protect the world of all things, and he gave us the means to do just that… I remember being excited to save lives. Plucking civilians from impossible odds and reveling in the praise. Summer and I even seemed like sisters for a while – we were so giddy. Like sisters…"
Yang unfurls when Raven tucks into herself. Yang's hand is warm on her shoulder. "The day Summer died was the day we realized we'd made her a Branwen. That she chose the world over us. Over her daughter." She glances at Qrow slumped against the ice wall. "Over her fiancé."
"It wasn't why I left, mind you. That was different. That was futility on my part. I couldn't save the world from something impossible, not with what Ozpin had us face. The tribe had to be my answer after that. Something I could save. Thought I'd find a little peace in scaling back. Scaling down. It felt like I was regressing but I wasn't like Summer. Didn't have the courage to face insurmountable odds like the compassionate fool she was…"
"Mom…"
"You… don't have to do that. You don't have to call me that. I know it doesn't mean anything."
Yang chuckles. "It means whatever I want it to. And right now, it means this." She squeezes her arm again. She knows it isn't forgiveness – not quite yet – but it's a step in that direction. More than she expects. More than she deserves.
"No room for doubt," Raven says. "You're Tai's alright."
"So, I've got some Rose and Xiao Long in me," Yang says proudly. "Doesn't mean there's any shame in having a part of me still be a Branwen."
Raven's lips thin. "Yang…"
"Hush," she says quickly. "Part of me still wants to save the world but I'm also in it for the thrills. I might not end up like Summer. I might not choose to martyr myself if I know I have people waiting for me. I can be selfish too. We all are. I think… I think there's value in being a part of all three."
"Four," Raven says. "That boy you've tied yourself to. You seem content when you're with him. Comfortable even. If he's involved, you're as much an Arc as you are a Branwen…"
"God…" Yang blushes. "You make sound like I'm married to him already."
"If it comes to that, you have our blessing."
"W-what!? Mom, isn't it a little soon for that?" Yang's shock fizzles at her mother's sad smile. "…Mom?"
Raven's gaze is on the house now. She's tearing up. "It's… it's funny," she says with some difficulty. Not through sobs but grit, almost anger. "I feel like I have everything I dreamed about having. I've got family again, a daughter that might love me, a loyal husband, an honest brother. I've even got a quiet home in the middle of the woods. It already has a rose garden and a dog. All its missing is the white picket fence." Her teeth grinds. Her head shakes in disbelief. "But I have to throw it all away…"
Yang's chest squeezes. "What… what do you mean?"
Raven won't look at her. "By Summer's end, that house will be empty. And it will stay that way until you decide to enter. To come back here." Raven's hand finds Yang's. "Because we – your father, uncle, and I – will be going back to Ozpin. We'll be gone for months doing work for him. And maybe we'll see each other again, but it won't be much and never for long enough."
Yang's skin grows cold and clammy. She doesn't like what she's seeing, the sheer finality in her mother's eyes. Resigned to some inevitability. So this is what it means to be a Branwen. Somehow, she understands but she has coasted along the unknown for long enough.
"What is Ozpin doing, Mom?" She asks. "He sent out Ruby earlier this week and –"
Raven jolts into standing. "What!? He has Ruby!?" Her eyes are white with fear. She doesn't wait for Yang to answer, sprinting back in the direction of the boys. "Qrow! Ozpin has Ruby!"
Yang follows, jogging behind her.
Qrow curses. "No, no, no!" Frantically, he fumbles for his scroll. "This can't be real…" His face is going red with panic.
Tai snatches his scroll from him. "Enough! The both of you!" He breathes. "Enough… If Ruby is with him, then she did so willingly."
"But she… she…!" Qrow stammers.
His hand goes to squeeze his shoulder. "I know…"
"I can't lose another Rose to him," Raven gasps. Her sword is already out, prepared to open another portal. Tai's hand takes her by the wrist.
"And we won't," he assures. "We'll cover every gap and protect her ourselves. Maybe even see her on the field."
Jaune joins Yang's side as the other three huddle together. "What's happening?" he asks her, squeezing her hand. "They mentioned Ruby and I'm more than a little worried right now, I'll be honest."
"I don't completely know either," she says. "But it's larger than we are… Than all of us."
Raven rips open a portal before hugging Tai. She nods to Qrow, and they step into it, leaving Tai behind. With a sigh, he ambles over to Jaune and Yang.
"We should talk."

Tai explains that they all had a job from Ozpin a long time ago. That there was a serial killer and a disgraced Atlesian scientist, and that those two unsavory sorts were only scratching the surface. It was saving-the-world type stuff, and along the way they lost Summer because of it.
It still isn't done. Those two are still at large and there's word of there being more in league with them. That's all he's allowed to say but Tai has – for the past few years – allowed himself to grow complacent since they went underground.
Not anymore. He, Raven, Qrow, and Weiss's sister, Winter, will spend everyday onward tracking them down.
He lets slip that there's whispers of missing huntsmen in Mistral. Yang mentions that Ozpin had Ruby go out to that kingdom to meet someone. Tai tries not to show how much that bothers him.
They won't be seeing each other much from then on, he says. They'll try to keep in touch but they'll be knee deep in places the CCT has no signal in. He doesn't look forward to it but it'd make Summer proud that they're out there doing what needs be done.
The next morning, Yang wakes up alone in bed.
She stumbles down the steps into an empty living room, but then she hears the clamber of porcelain plates in the kitchen. She runs in only to find Jaune at the sink.
Behind him, the dining table has five plates of a warm breakfast. Omelets, tiny sausages, and a minced venison smothered in soy sauce till it's a blackish brown. Three of the plates are half eaten. They were here but left in a rush.
She slides into her seat. The noise of the chair catches Jaune's attention. He drops a letter beside her. Both their names are scrawled onto the poorly folded note.
He sits beside her. "I didn't get to see them myself but I found this and a set of keys." She shows her the worn keys and drops them neatly by her plate. She recognizes them. They're for the house and they aren't spares. One of them even has the word "FRONT" roughly carved into it. It's filled in with golden stencil. She and Ruby did that, back when they were kids.
She opens the letter and reads it aloud. "Sorry. We'll try to be home by tonight. Don't wait. House is yours."
"Not very eloquent," Jaune says after swallowing, "but they were probably in a hurry."
"Eloquent?" Yang laughs. "Where'd you pick that up?"
"Weiss had a few choice words for my poor poetry back in first year. I told you I picked up a few things from her."
He's already finished the sausages on his plate. Yang remembers to eat.
"So, what now?" he asks her. "We house sit for a few days until Ruby shows up?"
Yang shakes her head. "No… that isn't what they mean by the house being ours. They don't actually know when they'll be back. School year might even end before they do."
"That's… a long time."
"It is, but in the meantime," – she wiggles the keys – "we actually own the house."
Jaune frowns. It's deep and it cuts just as well. "That sounds like a parting gift."
Swallowing an omelet, her head falls onto his shoulder. "It is."
Then the door busts open and they hear Qrow slurring in the next room. He's accompanied with another voice, Winter's, as she shoulders him into the kitchen. She's stringing together insults whilst blushing up a storm. They're quiet them when they find Jaune and Yang.
Qrow squints as if unsure of what he's seeing. "Ohhhh," he bellows before whipping his head back. "They're still here!"
"Ahem," Winter says. "Forgive my intrusion. Present company often ends our meetings this way."
"Which is weird," Jaune says, "cause Qrow can walk just fine when he's drunk."
"He can… what?" She shoots Qrow a glare and he gives her that stupid grin of his. He's not even close to sorry. She shoves him off her and blushes against her pale skin. "You're insufferable. Trying to get a rise out of me.."
He hobbles back a step but his grin seems carved into his cheeks. "Heh, nah. I just like being close to you."
Raven peeks into the room then with Tai close behind. Her hesitation lasts only a moment before she hurries in and Yang's already bolted out of her seat to hug her.
"You came back…" Yang says. Her hands reach out grab her dad so they can sandwich her mother between them.
Raven squeezes. "I'm as much a Rose and Xiao Long as you are. I figured the world could wait till we could all say goodbye. At least."
They pull away. Raven's age shows along the harsh circles around her eyes.
"So, this really is goodbye," Yang fathoms, weaving her digits into that of her parents'. "This… doesn't feel real. Everything's happening so quickly and I just got you back and… and…"
Tai pushes strands of her hair behind her ear. "Life's abrupt," he says. "Especially when you become a huntress. You'll often find that your whole world can change in a day. Adapting to that is a skill you have to learn."
Raven's eyes narrow. "But we're not worried. I was scared for you all my life but every time I looked back, you were already over another hurdle." She holds her daughter again. "And just like then, I'll miss you every day."
Yang's grip tightens around her. Like she's hanging off the edge, held on by a thread. She can feel it slipping, digging into her palm. She knows she has to let go but there's a part of her now that's made her an Arc. She's defiant. Foolishly, optimistically, defiant. And it's with that nonchalance that she peels away and suggests, "We're all home. We should have breakfast. Like a family."
Qrow's already sat down and Winter has already eaten most of his venison. Tai insists on sitting next to Jaune again, and Yang huddles the closest she's had in years next to her mother.
Ruby never makes it to Patch. All they get is a nerve-wracking call from her that's more apology than explanation. Qrow tells them she's in a good hands.
They don't tell him that that isn't the point.

It's halfway through their second year that Jaune and Yang step back into their dorm rooms. They'd come two days early since they didn't want to stay in an empty house and an empty apartment didn't feel much better.
Jaune finds Ren and Nora snuggling by a bean bag. (Nora's messing with his hair while he goes through a book on Vacuan flora). Pyrrha isn't home since she's with her family, but Sun is lying on her bed and he greets Jaune with the kind of enthusiasm he needed.
It takes him a while to realize that his smile is forced. "Sun, please tell me there's nothing wrong with you and Pyr."
"What? Oh, no! Everything's fine with us!"
"He's been fussing about something else," Nora chimes in as she twists knots in Ren's hair. "And he won't tell his big sister, Nora, so you know it's gotta be big."
"Uh, I'm a year older than you."
She squints. "Why is everyone older than me!? I know Ruby's sixteen but I'm starting to feel like a toddler here."
"Nora," Ren says, "I'm younger than you."
Nora wraps her arms around his head to squeeze him against her chest whilst clasping tightly over his mouth. "Shh, same age, honey."
Sun turns to Jaune. "What…?"
"Nora made them have the same birthday when they were kids. Flipped a coin on who got to keep theirs. Ren lost." Jaune decides not to mention that it was to simplify a holiday for two survivors in the woods. Less stress on their resources when they buy only one cake a year and have to share it. "But enough about them. What's got you all knackered?"
"Knackered? Who even says that anymore?"
"Ylda Braveheart. Now quit stalling! What's going on, man?"
There's a knock on the door. "Come in!" Ren says. He's already put his book down and is snuggling back into Nora. She and Jaune exchange a look. Something's up.
Yang and Blake walk in. Yang joins Jaune on the bed while Blake crouches by Ren and Nora who both drag her into the bean bag with a yelp. They laugh at her expense, and for a moment it seems like it's just a visit.
Then Weiss and Neptune walk in and stand there in front of them all, locking the door behind them.
There's a thickness in the air. Jaune and Yang are already holding each other for strength. Sun curls into his knees beside them but Jaune won't have that. He reaches over and grabs his shoulder. He shuffles a tiny bit closer in response.
Weiss shuts her eyes, squeezes Neptune's hand, and stands tall. Like a performance demands, she is rigid and neutral, but it's too much and her knees wobble. Neptune catches her and reaches for a nearby chair. He rubs her shoulders after he sits her down and she's starting to breathe evenly.
"Nice and quick," Neptune whispers to her, and it's audible in the relative silence.
Yang and Blake have been standing since she buckled, unsure if they should run over and hug her. She spots them and raises a hand. "Sit, please. This will be easier if I do this without having to cry on something…"
Neptune kisses her head. Her hand finds his massaging her shoulder, and her other balls into a fist. "I'm… leaving team RWBY."
PART 9 – Adaptation
Yang is afraid she's hurting Jaune when she hears the news and tenses up, her fingers closing tightly over his. Little parts of her feel pain, like her pulse is bulging in her veins and stretching out of her skin. Then she realizes that it's her body telling her to go and hold Weiss close. Stop her talking cause it's easy to see how much all of this is hurting her and she's still so painfully afraid that her friends are going to hate her.
Yang bites her lip and leans out. Her hand is suddenly cold. Jaune had let go of it. "Go," he whispers.
She's off the bed and crashes into Weiss just as she's inhaling. Neptune backs away just as Blake runs over to join them.
Weiss stops talking cause she can't at this point. Her arms reach around them both but her nails curl into their backs as her fingers twitch and anything she wants to say is lost in her sobs.
"It's okay," Yang says. "We know you have a good reason."
"We'll still love you," Blake adds. "Doesn't matter if you're here or not. We're still a team."
To Weiss, that all seemed enough to uncoil her fears and breathe relief.

"I have to be his daughter. His heir," Weiss explains when they're all gathered at the empty cafeteria. "I'll have to play his games and do everything I can to keep my integrity and still be me."
Her sister informed her around the time of the boat trip that her father was planning to discredit her and seat her brother as next-in-line. "I know it sounds almost foolish but my plan was always to juggle life as a huntress and as an heiress. To prove that I could follow in my sister's footsteps without needing to make any of her sacrifices." Her hand, the one not holding Neptune's, falls to Myrtenaster resting magnetically at her hip. "Winter gave me so much when she trained me. I wanted to prove to father that none of that was a waste of time. It worked for a while, too. Atlas was abuzz with news on my departure. That I'd taken the strength of the old Schnee vanguard and vowed to marry it with the capitalist empire. That we were still the staunch knights we always were and that our nobility hadn't tarnished that."
"Why can't you just stay?" Nora asks, eyes gleaming like the absent Ruby. "Why does your dad get to take even more from you?"
Weiss smiles placatively at her and wishes Ruby was here too. "Because I've learned a lot in my time here with all of you. I've learned that Remnant will always have enough amazing huntsmen – there's already so many at this table." She eyes them all but stops at Blake. "But I've also learned that there's a lot of good I could be doing. A different kind of good for my people in Atlas. Human and faunus."
Blake gasps. There's a sting in her chest. "I'm… so sorry."
"Don't be. All that time staying up together has given me perspective. The kind I feel is uniquely distinct to a Schnee. I need to use that. Maybe get my brother to see it the same way."
"Will you have help?" Yang asks, locking eyes. "I'm not willing to let you go alone."
Weiss leans into Neptune. "I won't be alone."
"We'll have to keep our relationship secret," Neptune explains, "but I'll be at every function, every gala, every fancy dinner. Dad's a shipping baron so we've already let rumor spread that I'm looking into partnering with the Schnees to get trade into Vacuo."
"In a few months' time we'll be married, too," Weiss adds, giggling in way that's resigned and heartbreaking. "It's hardly the way we wanted it to go but it's how it has to happen so father doesn't marry me off for a business venture. We'd do it today if I was already eighteen."
"Are you sure he won't reject you at the door?" Jaune asks.
"Not when I come in as bargaining chip. I'll flirt my way through a few prospective suitors and he'll see I'm still too useful to throw out." She snuggles into Neptune's side and he wraps an arm around her. "We've spent weeks planning. And though I'm sure things are going to go terribly wrong at some point…"
"…We'll adapt," Neptune finishes.
Even though there's hope here, the moment feels strained. A tension in the air is either like knots in the heart or the tightening of a noose. So Jaune and Yang put on brave faces and stand up.
"This isn't how we should be spending this day together, isn't it?" she asks with a grin.
"It's a going-away party," he says, "so we should have a party. Ren? Join us in the kitchen. Let's bake a cake."
Nora's already on Weiss and Blake. "C'mon! I know a buffet outside of town that sells their raws cheap. I'll even show you two how me and Renny grilled fish! I guarantee that you two princesses won't find anything like that at your fancy dinners."
Blake opens her mouth. "Actually, we–"
"Hush! Mommy's talking."
Neptune and Sun trade looks.
"Should we get the drinks?" Sun asks him. "I know a way into campus we can smuggle alcohol through."
"Actually, just pump me full of sugar. This might be the last time I get to have soda since I'll be spending the next few years getting used to wine."
"Ew!"
"I know!"

When the semester starts, Glynda Goodwitch announces that Ozpin won't be back for a month or so still, so she'll be acting headmistress.
The sister teams are all worried about Ruby but she sends them messages with a few photos that she's on a mission with Ozpin and what looks to be a farmhand. They don't expect to be back for a while and she isn't even allowed to update them but she slips them messages anyway. (She doesn't know how long she can keep up the ruse that she had a spare scroll from before Beacon).
Yang's nerves get the better of her until Jaune convinces Qrow to give them an update. Somehow the photo of Qrow, Raven, Tai, Winter, and Ruby together like the disjointed family they are is a monumental comfort. She makes it her wallpaper. Jaune promises that they'll all get a chance to get in that picture together at some point.
With Goodwitch so busy, it leaves combat class to Professor Port. It's a blessing in disguise since the extra class drains him enough to sleep through most of his own class. He gets worried for a while until everyone gets visibly excited for what is effectively a free period and some students actually get comfortable enough to sit with him on his desk and share real stories for a change. He isn't always telling them this time either.
The teams spend a lot of time on the roof where they're allowed to grill. Jaune, Nora, and Blake make a show of their techniques and Weiss, who is sitting on the sideline, lets the collective aroma of their sizzling platters soak into her skin.
They also take turns teaching Weiss and Neptune how to cook. It'll be useful when they get a place of their own. They hadn't considered an apartment yet, actually.
"Trust me," Yang says, "after what you two are gonna go through, you could use a getaway that's just yours." She shares a meaningful glance with Jaune who blushes, suddenly unable to keep eye contact.
They make that second boat trip with the same crusty boatman. Sun and Blake tie on the number of lobsters.
They spend a night in the apartment, cramped together and drinking till sunrise. (Pyrrha learned to mix drinks with her uncle over the break and Jaune hasn't puked so much in his entire life).
They joyride in Jaune's new Highway Aries and the boatman's Beluga van to the same cabin they went to with Saph and Terra. Joan can drive too, apparently, and they decide that seating her next to the excitable Nora is a recipe for turning the winding country roads into a roller coaster. (Jaune, Yang, Weiss, and Neptune end up trailing behind the van because of it.)
They rent out a thawed ice rink and have their own school dance. (Jaune spent the week teaching Neptune how to lose his second left foot).
And they skip class on Friday to spend their last day together. Ruby even manages to call Weiss and they find out that they might even meet in Atlas for a while. (Jaune and Yang are starting to suspect that Ozpin already knows about the scroll).
In the next morning, Weiss's bed is empty cause she had to go alone in a separate flight. Neptune has to arrive a day later on a separate trip. It's abrupt and even though they all knew it was going to happen, it still feels like it came out of nowhere. The space Weiss leaves behind is palpable.
She manages to send them all one final message with a photo. She's holding Blake's little triangular team flags she made for them during last year's Vytal Festival against the window of the bullhead.
"We'll always be a team."

Jaune cracks an eye open at the sound of clicking on screen . He's in the apartment, in his room, but his door is open halfway. Through the dark he can see Yang and Blake's faces lit against a scroll on the couch. Blake is sleeping on her shoulder.
They set her up with the guest room (Yang's long since migrated all her things into his anyway) and they must've gotten up at some point last night to chat.
He shuffles out of bed, scratching his bare chest and blinking away his drowsiness.
Yang can hear him. "Mornin'… Evening? Morning. It's one-AM."
He peels around the doorframe. "Shouldn't we be quiet?" he says in a hush.
"Nope," she says, not even looking up from her scroll. "Blake said she wanted to wake up to the sound of people so the room feels less empty."
Regardless, he sits on the softly beside her. "Is that why she stayed up so late?"
"She used to wake up early with Weiss. Sometimes she'd fall back asleep when Weiss got her early morning shower, but with her gone she's hoping to sync up with me instead."
"Maybe Ren's more her speed. He gets up early to get breakfast prepped for Nora the rest of the team if she didn't eat it all when we got there."
"Too bad they're not roommates."
"Yeah…"
Blake shuffles. Her ears twitch and there's a smile on her lips.
"She seems comfy," he says, laughing. He can't help but think they've adopted a stray though he won't say it aloud.
Yang's thinking the same thing but keeps her mouth shut too. "She met with Sun and Ilia for brunch yesterday. She came in when they were already talking about him losing Neptune. She felt like an outsider listening in."
"She didn't walk away, did she?"
"No, she sat with them and they talked. Even admitted to how she felt. They tried to make her feel comfortable and Sun had no trouble talking about it, but even they admitted that it feels like she's just a step out of her element. She's going with Pyrrha to meet with them again later tonight."
"I'm guessing she's not particularly enthused?"
Yang nods. Blake stirs but doesn't wake. "She thinks losing Weiss is upsetting everything else in her life. She usually doesn't feel that kind of doubt when talking to them. Pyrrha's doing her best to help on her end, too, but she might need some more outside help to get her out of this funk."
Her scroll buzzes. Jaune instantly recognizes the sender. "Ruby?" His voice is hopeful, almost desperate.
She ruffles his hair. "Don't worry about it. If you start losing your cool, then I will too."
He rolls his eyes with a smile. "Sorry, I just miss her."
"She wanted to talk to you but she's only got enough courage to message her big sister. She's still beating herself up for being gone so long. She's afraid you might hate her."
He fishes his scroll out of his pocket, squeezes his face next to Yang and Blake's, and takes a photo. "Morning…" he types, "…Crater …Face." A moment passes after he sends it.
Yang's scroll is then blasted with exclamation points before a video call starts. Their hearts soar when they hear her whine for the first time in weeks. "Yang…! I wasn't ready!"
It's dark wherever she is, huddled in a closet judging by the hangars swinging above her. Zwei is whining and scratching somewhere in the background.
"Sorry, Sis, but we're a package deal now!" Yang says.
"We miss you," Jaune says, the look of him is anything but teasing.
"I miss you guys, too…" she looks away, head half hunched in shadow. Her expression is unreadable.
There's a shuffling on her end of the call, she looks up, eyes wide, as some light pours into the closet she's in. "Ruby?" a hushed boy's voice says. "Is everything alright?"
Her eyes dart and she gets up in a panic. Jaune and Yang stay quiet as the closet is shut and the scroll spins in the dark for a moment before her face shows up again next to the same farmhand in her photo with Ozpin. "Keep this a secret. Please?" she asks him.
"I… sure. Lips sealed. What are you–?"
"Yang, Jaune," she says quickly. "This is Oscar. He's my, um, partner for the mission I'm on."
"I, oh, uh, hi," Oscar stammers. "I'm Oscar." He slaps his forehead. "Stupid. She already said that…" Ruby giggles.
"Aw, Jaune," Yang nudges him. "He's you, freshman year."
Jaune huffs. "I like to think I was as confident as I was awkward." He gets up. "I'm getting peckish. You want any coffee?"
"The orange juice, please."
"Weak!" Ruby teases through the screen. "Milk is the way to go. Keep up the store-bought pulp and I'll be taller in no time!"
"I prefer oranges freshly squeezed myself," Oscar adds before he shuts himself up. He seems afraid to add to the conversation.
"They are freshly squeezed though," Yang says. "Right, Jaune?"
"If two days ago counts as fresh, then yeah. Reminds me of home."
Yang sniffs the air. "Are you cooking tuna and eggs again?"
"What? Clove didn't have much fish and poultry. We had beef, pork, and way too many vegetables."
"It's one-A.M.!"
"And we're out of snacks. Now do you want some of this or am I gonna split it with Blake?"
Blake rolls her cheek up the backrest to look at Jaune. The smell probably woke her. "Mm… You'll have no objection from me."
"He was a farmer?" Yang hears Oscar ask Ruby. "I thought he was a huntsman."
"Huntsman-in-training," Ruby clarifies for him. "He grew up in a farm. I don't think that counts as a farmer but he used to herd cows. Even had this brief stint when he was ten where he'd run with the farm dog and bark at the cows to help wrangle the cattle."
"Pfft!" Yang and Blake snicker. "What?"
"What are you laughing at?" Jaune asks from the kitchenette, stood in the lowlight.
"Nothing!" Yang calls back. "Feeling better, Oscar?"
"Oh. You noticed?"
"It's okay. Meeting new people can be scary. Can't have been any easier with Ruby."
"Actually, she could barely look me in the eye." Ruby bumps him but can't deny it. Oscar stays smug. "Ha ha… Had to ease into meeting her. She caught me in the middle of work and she scared me so much that I almost fell off the hayloft with the way she squeaked her greeting. I thought a mouse got in the feed again."
"Oscar!" Ruby whines. "I'm putting you through the ringer for this."
He looks scared. "Uh… mercy?"
They spend the some of that morning together. Ruby builds confidence enough to promise to make another call if Oscar can keep covering for her. They also find out Ruby is training Oscar and Yang couldn't be more proud.
They're somewhere remote and secret so Ozpin isn't taking chances with the security breach but Ruby hopes that a closet is enough to be inconspicuous. She still can't tell them why she's there but she will when they arrive.
They. As in both of them. Oscar is coming to Beacon. It should be exciting, even just a little bit. It's not going to fill the gap Weiss left behind but it means less quiet. Plus, Penny is with them and she might come too. But Yang picks up the sadness in Ruby's eyes whenever Oscar asks about Beacon. There's something wrong.
When Oscar goes off to distract Ozpin and Jaune takes Blake to the convenience store, Yang asks, "Sis, what's going on that you're not telling me?"
Ruby chews her lip. "I can't say," she says for the umpteenth time, but Yang can feel the weight of it now that it's coming out of her mouth and not through text on a screen. Somehow, that makes it harder to let it go.
"I'm scared for you," Yang admits, "I'm worried that something else irreversible is coming and…" No, she tells herself. She can't put this on Ruby. "It's okay. I trust you. I'm worried but I trust you and before you say anything, nothing you say will break that trust."
Ruby curls closer to the scroll, like she wants to hug her. "Thank you…" she whispers.
"Just come home safe…"
"I love you, Yang."
"I love you, too, Sis."

The dorm room doesn't have the comforts it used to. Yang almost feels ashamed for leaving it behind half the time but Blake tells her that it isn't something she should worry about. She always made time, even if her memories seem like a blur of blonde hair and blue eyes. It doesn't mean she valued her time with them any less.
No one can blame her for falling in love.
Still, with Blake snoozing under some double-wide bedding across the room, Yang feels alone in the room.
She sits up and she hears a startle somewhere. She realizes the silhouette she thought was Blake has been just a mess of pillows. (Blake pulled her and Weiss's beds together to get comfortable. Didn't work. All she's got now is more room to feel cold in. They still miss her).
Another hushed sound reaches her. She gets up and walks around but she stops when she spots Blake sitting on the floor against the wall. Her ears are twitching.
"What's happening?" Yang asks.
"I can hear Goodwitch in the JNPR dorm."
Yang shuffles closer. She can hear the faint tap of the headmistress's heels but nothing more. "What is she saying? Are they in trouble?"
"I thought so at first, but no. It's something about a transfer."
"A transfer? Like a student?"
"I don't know. I'll keep listening."
Yang wants to go back to bed and grab her scroll. Jaune could answer her if she asked. She bites her lip.
"There's someone else," Blake says. Yang's limbs stiffen again. "She sounds familiar but I could be wrong. She's talking about… Moving furniture?" She peels off the wall. "Maybe I shouldn't be listening in."
Yang realizes that she's probably working herself up over nothing too. "Maybe, but it got you out of bed at least." She laughs. "I've been worrying myself ragged about this team, but unlike the other two, you're actually here." Arms wrap around Blake's thinner shoulders. "I hope you aren't blaming yourself for all of this."
"I am but I know it's stupid," she admits. "Weiss having an epiphany was bound to happen anyway. And her father would have forced her to leave whether we turned out to be friends or not. But there's always that little side of me scraping at the back of my head. I'm so painfully aware that it's there that I could almost reach out and strangle it."
"Pfft! You sound like Weiss."
"Heh, well we'd spent over a year together. Some things were bound to rub off on each of us. In fact," she looks at Yang meaningfully, "you didn't explode once during that whole talk about Weiss's dad. Jaune have anything to do with that? You've been minding your temper."
She rubs the back of her head. "No, not entirely. I mean, we've helped each other along but we can't give each other all the credit. I've mellowed out cause we lost at Vytal and I crashed at a bar. Cause I came home a mess and you girls set me straight. I won't say that solved it completely. I think I gave myself enough time to ease out of my anger issues over the summer and finding Jaune and ending up in his apartment gave me places to feel normal and happy for a change." She's blushing now, can't help the heat rolling tight circles in her cheeks. "Did I ever tell you about that? No… I don't think I've told anyone. Being in that apartment let me glimpse a life of being a civilian. Not a huntress-to-be, just a girl living in the city she swears she'll die in. It felt simpler, domestic. And I kind of liked that. I kind of really, really liked that."
"I envy that," Blake says with a knowing smile lying sideways on her knees. "Not the civie life but the happiness. I'm glad you found someone. Honestly, it's kind of crazy you two aren't completely official yet."
"I, uh, I think we are? I mean, it's not like we've talked about it again since all this craziness happened but we've said the three-word thing, named our kids, we own a house together and –"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! What? Rewind there for a second."
"To which part?"
"I don't know, all of it?"
Yang shrugs and that is equal parts everything so like her and everything that's frustrating. "I don't know. They all just kind of… happened?"
"How do you just happen to own a house now?"
"A couple birds left it on my dining table and flew out the open door."
Blake squints. "I… I can't tell if you're joking."
Yang grins.
Blake's ear twitches to the faint sound of a door closing. "JNPR…" she mouths as she hears it. "…moving out?"
-0-
Blake thinks she heard it wrong. Yang tries to tell herself they could be misunderstanding something but when they meet with JNPR, they don't mention a thing. Jaune and Pyrrha are all smiles, whilst Ren is keeping Nora from any more antics. Nothing's changed.
It eats up at Yang more than she's willing to admit but Blake doesn't need to be told in order to notice her best friend writhing inside of herself.
On occasion she can see Jaune stealing glances at Yang. He's noticed that something's off too. Sure, Yang is keeping it close to her chest, but she isn't loose in the way she usually is. And even though her being a little more guarded might make sense given recent events, Jaune's been with her long enough to notice that she's been easing back into her old self. The regression should be obvious.
Blake nudges him at the end of Port's class. "Talk to her," she says.
He nods, a determined look to him. "I was gonna wait till she was ready. I guess I have to act this time."
Blake smiles. "Just like you, she'll need a nudge sometimes."
Jaune jogs over to Yang as she rolls her eyes at something Nora says. She should be laughing instead. His eyes narrow.
"Yang."
"Oh! Hey, sorry, I thought you were with Blake and Pyrrha. Did you need something?"
His hand clasp over hers and people around them pull away and snicker. He takes her hand and pulls her to the wall and out of the way. "Don't think I haven't noticed you worrying about something. What's wrong?"
Normally she'd come out and say it. Even before they got this close. Before they were together. She isn't the kind of girl that lets these things lie. But she's lost so much in the past few weeks and she's feeling more and more vulnerable. More and more fatigued.
And this? What she's worried about? Hushed whispers in the night that might ultimately mean nothing? Half of her thinks it's fears she's digging up for herself to pile on the already rich avalanche of things she has to deal with. Another hates herself for doubting him, and that she's ashamed to reveal she doubted him at all.
But they were supposed to be able to talk about anything, right?
Her mouth opens.
She remembers her mother. She'd looked so stoic when she said goodbye, daring not to fall apart and swallowing her fears. With a sigh, she lets it go.
"It's nothing," she says with an easy sigh. "I'll tell you about it later if you're so curious but I'd like to stop worrying about nothing and focus on the things that actually need my attention."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. Now I'm hungry."
"We still have class."
She takes his hand. "I don't care. Your girlfriend needs a pick-me-up."
-0-
Yang walks back into the dorm with a spring in her step. "Evenin'," she greets Blake who's lounging on the bed.
"Had a good night, I see? He not kissing you goodbye at the door?"
"We parted ways earlier. Said he had an errand to run."
Blake stares at her with a smile. Yang returns it before going back to her scroll. Blake's nose scrunches in confusion. "Well?" Blake asks.
"Huh?"
"What did he tell you?"
Yang winks. "Sweet nothings if that's what you're asking."
Blake's face goes through a series of emotion. "Yeah. Good. Great. Perfect." She sits up as her ears sharpen. "But what about last night? With the whispering and all that?"
"Oh! I, uh, I didn't ask about it."
Blake slips out of bed. "Okay, I've had it. Waited all this time to find out so let's just go over there and ask."
"Right. Sure." Yang picks up after her and doesn't bother to put her school shoes back on.
Blake stops just as she exits the door. Across from them is the JNPR dorm and the door is ajar. She twists back to Yang. "Was that open when you passed it by?"
"I didn't notice."
They approach the door and feel a draft coming through. The door swings to the side as they enter and the thud against the wall is the only sound.
The JNPR dorm is empty. Even the blinds have been stripped away and one of the windows is cracked open.
A hole opens in Yang's stomach. Confusion, mostly. Anger, even if she can't place it. She doesn't know what's happening.
Blake's hands are sweating too when they reach for hers. "Your scroll is buzzing," she says and they run back to their room.
Yang has a message from Jaune.
'are you decent?' it reads.
'uh…. Yeah?' she replies after a cursory glance at her uniform.
'perfect'
Yang stares at the word. His scroll didn't even get to auto-punctuate it. She's already typing another message. Where are you right now? I was at your dorm and it's empty – She stops typing when they hear a grunt and a thud.
Blake's ears perk up. "Nora?"
Something breaks, like snapping wood, then Yang can hear it too.
"Hah!" Nora shouts. The thud after shakes something in their room. "Hah!" Another shudder, louder and resonant. "Hng…!" They can feel the way she's inhaling. "Hah!" Then their wall shakes.
"Hah!" Then a chunk of the wall pops out and swings aside like a portal door. They can see Nora behind the hole. She's in the next dorm room. They transferred next door instead of across the hall.
Nora peeks in with a wide grin, the light behind her shining over her features like a beacon. She pulls away and her hammer carves down into the hole till its roughly the shape of her silhouette. She kicks away the loose boards and cement around her and stomps into the room.
"Evenin' roomies!" she announces with gusto and caked in dust.
Jaune slips passed her in shorts and a worn shirt, pillow under his arm and eyes half awake. He walks up to Yang and takes her hand. "Sleepy?" he asks.
She realizes she's exhausted. Relief lets her body feel its fatigue. "Yeah…"
He pulls her to bed and they fall in together. She's confused but doesn't focus on it.
"What is happening?" Blake asks Ren as he comes in with Pyrrha in tow. (Who has already apologized but her smile doesn't slip away even once).
"Jaune said that it was starting to get a little quiet here in your dorm," Ren explains. "So, we hatched an idea to trade rooms with your neighbor's. Team ASHE took a room on a different floor instead of taking ours."
"Miss Goodwitch was very accommodating," Pyrrha says. "Went so far as to levitate most of our things from one room to another."
"She almost said no," Jaune says with a yawn, "but when I explained why we were doing it, she just sighed and drew up the permit."
"You need a permit to switch dorms?" Blake asked. "Wait, there's a permit for that?"
Nora hoists the hammer back onto her shoulder. "Permit's not for the dorm. It's for breaking down the wall."
Blake can't help but a feel a tingle under her skin, and it rolls into heat when Pyrrha and Ren squeeze her between them.
The night draws down and they got rid of the bits of dust and talk about how they're supposed to tear the down the wall. They'll put up two beams they'll have to pay for themselves but the rest of the wall can go away and there will be nothing between the two rooms in a few days.
And when they're all cleaned up (and splitting two bathrooms between six people), they push the four RWBY beds together so they can crawl under the collective sheets. In the middle, Yang sees Blake shiver happily between Ren and Nora, calmer than she has been in weeks.
Nestled against the curve of Jaune's neck, she nudges him. "Thank you for this," she whispers.
"It wasn't all me," he murmurs.
She flicks his forehead. "You're allowed to take credit for the idea, at least. Besides, I feel like I should reward you somehow."
"Fine," he grumbles but his smile doesn't sell it. "As for the reward, I'd ask about the rent but I think we should stay out and keep the bill thin this month. I don't think I can meet the payment this time if it gets any bigger with electric and water."
Yang chuckles. "Hey, you asked for the heavy down payment so you could sidestep the interest. That car is a money sink and you should've seen this one coming." He whines and she kisses his nose, making him whine some more. "Still, I'll still have to find a way to thank you."
"Missionary always works for Sun," Pyrrha chimes in from behind her.
Jaune and Yang's eyes go wide.
"What?" Pyrrha asks as they stare at her. "Too vanilla?"
Yang squeezes a pillow to her own face. "Pyrrha!"
"What? Oh! Sorry. I hadn't realized that you… It's just that Sun's been gentlemanly and I tried to get him to talk dirty to spice things up so I ended up having to do it myself and –"
"Uh, Pyr?" Jaune stops her. "That's not it. We, uh, we haven't done it yet."
She tilts her head. "Missionary?"
"Sex," Yang whimpers.
Nora shoots up. "What!?"
Yang shrinks even further. "Are you all awake!?"
Ren turns an open eye behind him and Blake peers sheepishly over the length of his arm. No one looks sorry.
"Ugh…" she groans. "Is it too late to call this a bad idea?"
Pyrrha pulls her away from Jaune and into the collective cuddle of everyone else. "Not on your life, Xiao Long."
She mouths a "help me" to Jaune.
He reaches under his pillow, pulls out his scroll into its camera, and mouths a coy "No," before the shutter snaps.
The photo goes up with the rest of the stringed ones Ruby set up earlier that year. Eventually, they flood it with more memories till the ceiling is lined with their found family gleaming from wall to wall to wall.

(ask game) thank you so much for playing the game!! you’re the best (per usual)!!
Helllll yeahhhhh 21 is the DUMBEST STUPIDEST fic I’ve ever made and I lovvveee it 💚💙❤️ it’s the “Vampire Zombie” one i mentioned in the original ask game post 😂😂
So glad someone picked the number!! Background to keep in mind: do yall remember when there was just a shit ton of Vampire fics on FFN?? Idk about ao3, but for newer fandom members this was TOTALLY a trend in the early 2000s on ffn, and I was like why the fuck are all of these here??? And like, why is it constantly a predator-prey relationship between the rrb and ppg??? So I was like wait…okay, but this could be funny and decided to write a story making fun of these super cringey stereotypes.
The story would be a multi fic and I have zero idea how to explain it concisely, so basically below the cut is just me laying it all out for you srsly I’m just bearing my soul to you:
For the girls’ birthday, the Professor tricks out the simulation room they train in to be a VR game room b/c the girls had talked about VR once (and only once), but the Professor thought it was cool and ran with it. The Girls can create a world of their choosing and explore. They admit the idea is pretty cool and eventually start arguing where they should “go” first. Blossom suggests a historical era like the Victorian era/Bubbles suggests something romantic, where she hints at vampires/Buttercup doesn't like any of those ideas, but the vampires reminded her of all of her zombie videogames she plays and she ends up suggesting something like that instead/ To prevent arguing the Professors says he’ll combine all three ideas into one!
[[how does this machine work??? IDK in the spirit of early 2000 fanfics, anything complicated and confusing is only vaguely explained—which has in story effects that drive Blossom INSANE! Idk how it would work technically, but my choices as the writer on what is/is not describe and purposeful grammar mistakes has story implications] [ill explain this more later]]
The Professor loads up the “game,” but something malfunctions. He tells the girls (Buttercup) not to touch anything. She doesn't listen and ends up plugging something into an entirely different device against Blossom & Bubbles protest. The device is that old “time machine” thing the Professor made in one of the OG cartoon (the one where the girls meet the Young Professor). It turns out that whatever she does (again still don't ask me how) fuses the basic concept of the two machines together and creates a device that transports them to a parallel universe that matches the specifications of the “game” they wanted to create.
[[Throughout the story, i want to include little video game gags, like bottomless bags for storage, or random bullets laying around, little things like that. (they've lost their powers/ but BC keeps finding all these random guns/knifes so they're good) I also give the girls the “ability” to read the dialogue I write. So, when I mess up a comma (i.e. Let’s eat Grandma! vs Let’s eat, Grandma!), Blossom will look at the “character” they’re talking to and be like, “WELL, which is IT!?”] [I know it’s stupid, but I think its so fun!]]
So, because of the video game “glitch,” the girls think for the longest time they’re actually IN a video game, but when they “go to sleep” thinking that’ll save the game and they can quit, per Professor’s instruction, they find out they can’t. Cue freak out. After the calm down, Buttercup’s like okay, listen we probably just have to beat the game! Too bad they don’t know what the game’s objective is exactly. They just know they’re dressed in Victorian Era clothes and their “Professor” is the town’s doctor? Their mother died (tragically). It’s all a bit dramatic. They start searching for clues. Eventually, they find out that the Town has a zombie problem (THANKS BUTTERCUP!), and Blossom figures if they can cure that, they beat the game. Unbeknownst to them, they are actually stuck in a stupid vampire love plot there just happens to be zombies. [Like, you can’t have one supernatural creature without another and I wasn’t going to write about werewolves.] No one in town seems to care about the undead problem. Buttercup keeps “leveling up,” Blossom’s on the verge of a breakdown, and then, finally, Bubbles meets Boomer.
Boomer swears up and down Bubbles is his fated mate. Bubbles—who is definitely interested—is like ooo so you’re a vampire, cutie? He’s broody about it. She’s like so do you sparkle in the sun?? (I absolutely love sparkles, she says). He’s like, wut?? She’s like, do you sparkle???? He’s like, uh no, the sun kind of burns my energy tho. She’s like, oh. Okay. I see. You don’t sparkle. Sooo, well, haha, okay you seem like a really really sweet guy with the whole eternal devotion thing, but I don’t think this is really going to work out between us. He’s again like WUT. Boomer gets broken up with because he doesn’t sparkle.
Vampire Butch is flat out scared of Buttercup. Like he fully admits he’s sucked infants dry of their blood; he’s why people should fear the night; he’s not a “good guy”; but BC is a force to be reckoned with. In the Victorian era, I’m guessing they had little to no experience with the modern day “bro” and BC is full on bro. This doesn’t mesh well with Butch’s broody, dark, vampire thing he’s got going on. She’s too vulgar for a Victorian lady, she wears things called “Chacos,” and she has a gun??? Multiple guns. And He. Has. No. Fucking. Idea. What. She. Is. Saying!! No! He will not “dab her up!” No, he “doesn’t lift.” This wasn’t his mysterious, tough (but still a damsel, mind you) mate he met one fateful evening, this was some heathen creature (and this is coming from a vampire), so please, please, please, can he kill her?????
Blossom’s like I don’t like to be touched and I’m a lesbian, and Brick’s like one) I think I respect you more than the old Blossom; two) the zombies just appeared, stop asking; three) you need to now help us find our mates before their eighteenth birthday or we’re all screwed.
Ready to kick ass and fight sexist stereotypes with their new “bros,” the girls set out with their new objective, hoping beyond hope that once they find the missing girls they’ll be able to go home. The girls find out that their parallel alternatives went disappearing a few days ago, so their “return” had been a relief to the whole town. [[Blossom’s like why did no one question our clothing?!?! Why are there zombies?!?!]] ugh and then, I don’t know what happens :( really. I never really ended it. They girls just constantly shit on the boys being broody vampires and kick zombie ass, like idk what else a gal could want out of a story. I feel like they end up finding the other girls. And I think that I was going to bring HIM into the mix, but it’s still just regular HIM. It turns out that HIM likes jumping dimensions to make the Girls life hell in every lifetime and has cursed the three girls living in the vampire dimension. (“I’ve got a life outside of just you, ya know.” HIM huffed, “What are you three doing here?”) It also turns out that out of all the dimensions, our Girls as Superheroes are the best at beating HIM and saving the day, so he’s extra pissy that they’re ruining his carefully crafted “historical romance vampire soap opera.” Blossom loses her shit because the historical inaccuracies are too high to now ignore, Bubbles is pissed because HIM didn’t make good enough vampires, and Buttercup’s like honestly, not a bad game, ngl. Everyone ignores her.
[[They beat HIM, free the other girls, return home, and BC obsesses over their stats sheets. Back in Vampire land, the boys are like wait a second the relationships we are now stuck in suck.] [The zombies are still not explained]]
